Does your ex-MP live in your constituency?

Asusefulasamarzipandildo · 04/06/2024 12:28

No one has an MP at the moment which is why I've put ex in the title. But Nigel Farage standing for Clacton made me wonder how many MPs and candidates don't live in the constituency they represent or want to represent. I also wonder Will Mr Farage move to the most deprived area of the UK if he wins?

Our ex-MP did, but none of the main party candidates for this election do. (Though one of them did until the recent boundary changes split the constituency, and they were actually a local councillor)

Enderunicorn · 04/06/2024 12:40

Our current ex MP I believe does although now that he is retiring maybe not for much longer. The new Tory candidate has local connections but the way that's mentioned all the time I assume not actually living locally.
The labour candidate for last two elections (at least) didn't live in the constituency, I get that they stood no chance anyway but is it that impossible to find someone local to stand? They do have a local candidate this time but it took a week after election was announced to announce a candidate so we are probably a v low priority seat.

TonTonMacoute · 04/06/2024 12:48

Yes, she is a native so always has. The previous one had lived and worked here a long time but wasn't from here.

Ihateslugs · 04/06/2024 14:01

Not only does our MP not live in her constituency, neither does she pay us a visit very often - until very recently! It’s a strong Tory seat but maybe even she is worried about losing her seat, I do hope so!

AndrewPreview · 04/06/2024 14:09

Yes he did, but he was our MP for a very very long time (he was father of the house before he retired) so had ties to the area for well over 50 years.

GentlemanJohnny · 04/06/2024 14:17

Ignoring the no-hope independent candidates, only the Lib-Dem definitely does.

The sitting Tory claims to but most people reckon she's actually a little way outside in the next constituency (& county!).

mindutopia · 04/06/2024 14:19

I honestly didn't even know who our MP was as we've only just moved here since the last general election. Upon doing my research, it appears that yes, he does live here at least some of the time, but it also appears he is definitely a bit of a corrupt wanker. Not the right party for me anyway, so he wouldn't be getting my vote even if he wasn't a wanker.

That said, interestingly, we bought our house from a local councillor. It was only after that I did some digging and he seems to represent a different council area than the one we live it. He definitely didn't move there recently as he'd lived in this house for 30 years. I always thought it was quite odd, but maybe not as uncommon as I assumed.

Are you in Kent? Sounds like my mp? Or ex-mp as due to boundary changes, she won’t be representing us (if re-elected).

readingmakesmehappy · 04/06/2024 14:46

No idea. He is almost entirely invisible and will almost certainly hold his seat but we have heard nothing from him, his social media is all party propaganda and he's never in either of the two very good local papers.

YellowHairband · 04/06/2024 15:08

It's a large town with a few constituencies so I'm not sure if they live specifically in the constituency but they definitely are in the local area.

For this election, the Lib Dem and labour candidates both grew up here I believe, and the Tory candidate lives in the area now, and has been a local council member. Again, not sure if they all live right in the constituency, they might be just over the constituency border but still in the town.

TheBloatedMiddle · 04/06/2024 15:11

Mine does. Tory. But when he was elected he was 'only' a second homer. But he moved here full time and has really advocated for our fairly economically depressed area. He replaced a truly hopeless lumpen piece of dead wood (also Tory) so he has been quite the breath of fresh air tbh. He also responds to queries really fast- or at least the 2 times I have e-mailed I got a response very fast! One time it was useful, one time it was pointless platitudes.

ItsFuckingBoringFeedingEveryoneUntilYouDie · 04/06/2024 15:27

None of them do.

The Tory lives in a neighbouring, prettier, better off area. He is the current MP, but due to boundary changes has a good chance of losing it. He has been missing in action since election, so will be glad to see the back of him.

The Labour one is a last minute parachute in who lives about 300 miles away. I think they thought the Tory was going to cross the floor, then ran out of time to finish their selection process.

The LibDem lives in a neighbouring constituency, has a good track record as a councillor and has been getting to know the area and our issues for months. Would love to see her elected, but don't like her odds, as we are not a target seat.

HobnobsChoice · 04/06/2024 15:33

Mine is George Galloway, thankfully he doesn't live here despite his threat/promise to move here. He's only just set up a constituency office.

Mydogisagentleman · 04/06/2024 15:35

No. He has purchased a flat which is good of him.
He spends the majority of his time in north London.

Bluevelvetsofa · 04/06/2024 15:36

Ours is stepping down and I’ve no idea who the replacement is. He doesn’t live in the constituency and I’ve never seen him either out and about, or at any events. Because of the constituency changes, we’ve moved to another area and I’ve no idea whether the MP there lives in the constituency. She’s a minister, so I expect not.

Bluevelvetsofa · 04/06/2024 15:37

Just looked and she doesn’t, but not too far away.

fussychica · 04/06/2024 15:37

Our current one does but have posted this very query on the Labour candidates Facebook page but I've not yet had the courtesy of a response which is a bit disappointing.

IDontLikePinaColadas · 04/06/2024 15:39

My ex MP did, but he's stepping down anyway and the new candidate for their party lives miles away.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 04/06/2024 15:40

Not any more, as the constituency boundaries have just changed in our area, so the village he lives in has changed from one constituency to another.

MrsTomRipley · 04/06/2024 15:40

Mine does Labour, the one in the next constituency does, Conservative. Funnily enough they both went to the same grammar school, which is in the Tory seat

AngelsWithSilverWings · 04/06/2024 15:46

Our's moved here when she was parachuted in for a bi election two and a bit years ago. She apparently came from here originally so calls herself a local even though I think she's spent most of her adult life living in another part of the country. To be fair to her she is very very present in the community and gets quite a bit of stick for her constant photo opportunities and publicity stunts. It's always been a safe Tory seat but talk is that it's not so safe anymore.

ElephantsDontReadFantasy · 04/06/2024 15:48

Not sure if she’s in the exact constituency but she’s in the general are and the boundaries wibble a lot.

i just emailed my Labour, Conservative, and Lib Dem candidates with 5 questions. Let’s see who bothers to reply! (Would have emailed the SDP candidate but she didn’t have an address!)

Misthios · 04/06/2024 15:51

Ours does. (SNP) Part of the reason she won last time was that she ran on a ticket of "local girl for local issues" when she was standing against Jo Swinson of the Lib Dems, who had a flat locally but who everyone knew lived hundreds of miles away in Bath.

Againname · 04/06/2024 16:32

Mine does (Tory) but when I was younger and living somewhere else the MP there (Labour) didn't live in the constituency. Although if it's relevant both the constituency and where the Labour MP lived were "naice" areas.

haddockfortea · 04/06/2024 16:37

Yes he does (Labour), and he only had the seat a short time, winning the seat after the Nadine Dorries shambles. The constituents finally saw sense and kicked the Tories out, after having held the seat since 1931.
