Does your ex-MP live in your constituency?

No one has an MP at the moment which is why I've put ex in the title. But Nigel Farage standing for Clacton made me wonder how many MPs and candidates don't live in the constituency they represent or want to represent. I also wonder Will Mr Farage move to the most deprived area of the UK if he wins?

Yep. But I am in London and I think it's probably pretty common. Don't think she grew up in the constituency but close by.

pizzaHeart · 04/06/2024 16:43

Our current MP does (standing again), moved when was elected sometime ago.
Don’t know about other candidates but they don’t have much chance.

Zonder · 04/06/2024 16:44

No, and she can't find her way around when she does hold her nose and come visit.

FluffyDiplodocus · 04/06/2024 16:51

Yes, both the last two in our area have lived locally and were genuinely involved in the local community. One was seen at the local pubs quite often!

Moonflower12 · 04/06/2024 16:57

Our does, I've just found out, after a quick Google.

He is notoriously slippery and has been involved in numerous expenses scandals etc, but at least his horses are warm.

He has stood down for this election and his successor is from a constituency about 200 miles away.

LimeandCourgette · 04/06/2024 16:57

Yes. The previous one still does too.

I've heard the term 'carpet bagger' used to describe people who seek election in an area they don't live in.

MrsJackThornton · 04/06/2024 17:05

Yes and in the previous area I lived the MP at the time lived there too

I think at one point here we had an MP who didn't quite live in the area but that was due to the area boundaries changing slightly so I don't think anyone held it against him

That said we had some local elections awhile back and part of my decision making for who to vote for was that only one candidate actually lived in the area

CeeJay81 · 04/06/2024 17:12

Yes he does, never comes to this area though. Our constituency has been expanded recently, a bit of a different area has been added to it. It'll be interesting to see the results but unfortunately it's going to be one of the ones staying blue☹️. Why I'll never know but hey ho.

Maddy70 · 04/06/2024 17:14

All worhoit fail of the labour MPs lived there. Last time we had a tory he didn't

Onthegrid · 04/06/2024 17:25

I'm in a long-held Tory constituency for many years we had a local community MP but when the last one retired they brought in an outsider who is not even liked by the local Tory faithful.
The majority is declining and the other parties are fielding strong local candidates. To me local means living in or close by the constituency, housing is expensive in this part of the UK and moving a challenge so I am happy to accept a margin providing our MP is involved locally and not just all about Westminster.
To be fair as we are in London commuter land it really shouldn't be difficult which is why I can't understand the Tories

DaisyHaites · 04/06/2024 17:28

Yes.

He’s a conservative MP who has done a lot locally but doesn’t have a great track record on voting on national matters.

I’m really in a quandary as I appreciate what he’s achieved locally as this is much more than the previous Labour MP… but I’m not sure I can vote Tory in good conscience this time around, but would like to keep my MP!

NotMyDayJob · 04/06/2024 17:46

My ex MP lived on my street! Until we moved. As far as I know she is still there and we still live in the constituency

CherryBombe · 04/06/2024 17:52

My ex mp had a house here near me but we rarely saw her actually in it.
