Help! Burned fingers on drain unblocker

Polkadoteyes · 03/06/2024 20:20

I think this is a LTB situation too tbh but let me tell you what's happened. We've had a slow draining shower, with standing water in the drain bit and a slight eggy smell.
DH and I have clearly both decided to have a crack at solving it independently of each other today.

I've just gone in with the drain snake thing where you shove a spring with a handle in. Only after a few wiggles, my fingers started to sting, then tingle. Then burn. Turns out DH has put drain unblocker solution down and I've had my hand in god knows what. Caustic soda??! anyway I've washed it and put in cold water. And now put Sudocrem on but my fingers feel like when I (sometimes for fun) dip them in my Scentsy wax. Like they have little caps on them. Have I removed my fingerprints ? Will I have blisters under the cream. Should I have a gin and sit and demand drinks and snacks be brought to me by acid bath boy? FFS. Any tips ? Other than planning jewel thefts with my right hand only ...

Sympathies.

I've lost the sensation in my fingertips on 3 fingers after bleach contact. It's been circa 3 months and the feeling still hasn't come back. Not sure it ever will.

Polkadoteyes · 03/06/2024 20:31

Oh god no really? How did it happen?

You need to find the bottle of drain cleaner, look at the active ingredients, see what it says for contact with skin, if you dont have the bottle, google the brand and call 111 for poison advice

Singleandproud · 03/06/2024 20:33

Chemical burn you should go to A &E / out of hours and wash off the sudocream. Drain cleaner is extremely corrosive and continues burning down into the skin even if the surface seems fine. Washing it off should have taken at least 10 minutes under continuous running water not a quick rinse

thanKyouaIMee · 03/06/2024 20:33

Have you got the drain cleaned bottle? Ring 111 / poison control.

Wash off the sudocrem!

Iusedtobeapenguin · 03/06/2024 20:33

Put your fingers in cold water or on an ice pack - then call/message 111 for advice.

Princesspollyyy · 03/06/2024 20:34

Get medical attention tonight, oh and er... you and your other half need to try communicating with each other?

Singleandproud · 03/06/2024 20:35

Do not use an ice pack, cold running water only.

ghostbusters · 03/06/2024 20:36

Joining in the chorus of get checked out tonight. You don't want any residue to continue burning your fingers tonight.

Just from using a multi purpose spray cleaner that has bleach in it I think without wearing gloves. I thought it was temporary damage but still the sensations in my fingers are really messed up now.

Wildflower86 · 03/06/2024 20:39

20 mins running water for burns...whilst waiting ring 111 for advice and have bottle with u so you can reference.

This ^ Alkali burns are nasty.

Read the instructions on the bottle for what to do. If it says flush with water, don’t rub or wipe it. Flush under running water for 20 mins. Let the water run freely so it doesn’t pool on the skin. Get medical advice. Although maybe skip straight to get medical advice now that you have applied Sudocrem.

Idiottax · 03/06/2024 20:51

Shoot. Worse than I thought possibly. Hes due back any time and I can't see bottle.no clue why he's not left the bottle in as a clue it was there.

IncessantNameChanger · 03/06/2024 21:07

Can you call him.to get the cleaner details? Chemical burns can be really nasty

Idiottax · 03/06/2024 21:08

Got the bottle. Just says rinse with water

Idiottax · 03/06/2024 21:08

No blisters or anything so am running under water now

nocoolnamesleft · 03/06/2024 21:15

Alkali burns are awful. Unless your hand feels normal, keep it under running water to wash it away, sitting with it in a bowl if water will not help. If there are any visible lesions you really need urgent medical help. Last time I saw a patient with alkali burns we had to keep them under the cool shower for over an hour before the pH of their skin normalised enough for the very concerned burns unit at the other end of the phone to let us stop.

What brand is it?

Idiottax · 03/06/2024 21:19

Spear and Jackson

Idiottax · 03/06/2024 21:22

It gets a 1* review on b and w for being crap so I hope this means my fingers will be ok

Idiottax · 03/06/2024 21:27

Spear and Jackson

Ignore that. Hes done the outside too. Indoor is HG.

Idiottax · 03/06/2024 21:27

They feel ok but I'm keeping the rinsing going and my friend is a nurse and she said to rinse for 20 mins but will likely be fine

I'm confused, are you Polkadoteyes?

Idiottax · 03/06/2024 21:33

Name change fail but I'm not worried about being recognised as the idiot who burned her fingers !

IncessantNameChanger · 03/06/2024 21:36

I can't see the concentration on the safety sheet but if from my lab days, if your skin feels soapy when you rinse it, that's your skin melting off in crude terms. 1% to 10% could be anything??

This says seek medical attention if symptoms persists https://shop.acopia.co.uk/files/products/28161_Sink%20&%20Drain%20Unblocker%20Gel.pdf
