What do you do when your child grows out of school shoes

With half a term left? I’m thinking I’ll just buy new ones. Cheap shoes not an option unfortunately.

My youngest needs new one but we only have 5 weeks left so I won't be buying new ones.

bakewellbride · 02/06/2024 19:38

I'd always buy new. You can't have growing feet in shoes that don't fit. Vinted is a cheap option

Dollenganger333 · 02/06/2024 19:39

I worry that young children shouldn’t have shoes that are too small. Especially in my DD’s case because she has very high arches.

Buy new. They’re unlikely to grow out of the new ones by September.

HateMyRubbishBoss · 02/06/2024 19:39

New cheap ones from Amazon!

GailTheFish · 02/06/2024 19:39

DS1’s shoes literally fell apart the last week before half term, I’ve bought half a size up from his size now, so hoping they will still be good come September. I spend more on his shoes than my own!

ZipZapZoom · 02/06/2024 19:42

Buy new shoes. No adult would be content to wear shoes daily that didn't fit properly for several weeks so I wouldn't do the same to a child. Buying new now also means you're unlikely to need new shoes in September unless they're going through a mega growth spurt.

Iggleoggledaffy · 02/06/2024 19:43

Buy new shoes. Thought he could last til July then realised his socks were coming through the sole.

roarrfeckingroar · 02/06/2024 19:45

Buy new shoes... isn't that pretty obvious?

APurpleSquirrel · 02/06/2024 19:45

At our school they'd let them wear trainers or sandals for this term as it's so short. Might be worth asking?

Beepbeepvroomvroom · 02/06/2024 19:45

I always buy Clarks very good/hardly used school shoes from Vinted or EBay for under £5!

ConfusedConfuse · 02/06/2024 19:46

Buy new? I had to spend £60 on shoes for my son a couple of weeks ago..

Sandals really? Neither trainers or sandals would be allowed at my sons school

Chickenuggetsticks · 02/06/2024 19:47

I actually but the next size up as well when I buy school shoes. Dd is still growing quite fast and he feet went up a size quite quickly so it was convenient to have them in the drawer waiting but doubt her feet are going to grow much over summer.

Swearwolf · 02/06/2024 19:47

Have you asked the teacher? Assuming primary age. Our school will usually let the child wear trainers if they outgrow their school shoes so close to the end of term, you'd be buying new ones anyway if their feet have grown and they can be worn all summer.

GoingUphill · 02/06/2024 19:47

I just buy new shoes when they need them. Sometimes that means they don't have new ones at the start of the academic year, which is fine by me. Likewise with uniform.

whatsinanameeh · 02/06/2024 19:48

You buy new shoes. It's happened to my DS before too, with 4 weeks of term left and hardly any school shoes in the shops.

My dad wore hand me down shoes and shoes that didn't fit all his childhood. His feet are awful, all pinned straighter now and very nearly a few amputated. Buy second hand clothes, toys and whatever else but buy new shoes for growing feet. Never squeeze into too small or previously worn shoes.

drawnfrommemory · 02/06/2024 19:49

Buy new shoes as their feet don’t magically grow exactly in line with every academic year.

Mrburnshound · 02/06/2024 19:50

If the arches are an issue can you use arch supports and just some tesco shoes?

Although tbh if they have dark coloured trainers i would send them in those or in sandals

Sandals? Surely sandals are completely unsuitable for school.

Are they too small for them?

Anywherebuthere · 02/06/2024 19:53

Does he have another pair of non-uniform shoes, trainers or pe trainers that fit?

If he does it might be worth speaking to school. They might be ok for him to wear those instead for the next few weeks. Nothing to lose by asking.

I've done that when mine have outhrown footwear or trousers in the last few weeks and school have been fine with it, they realise children might be still be growing over summer and its a waste to buy a new pair potentially just for a few weeks.

Blarn · 02/06/2024 19:53

New, we've just had the same. Dds both have very high insteps but I have found the t-bars in Shoezone fit, I couldn't justify £60 for the Geox ones which she usually has, especially as she has PE twice a week and goes in her kit! I think our school would be happy with dark trainers if we explained though.

Isitchill · 02/06/2024 19:53

New shoes.
They'll still fit in the autumn term and you won't have to deal with the mad August rush in the shoe shop.

Leopardmatches · 02/06/2024 19:53

I would buy whatever shoes they need but they would have to wear them when not at school too.
