I'm fucking up the washing . I took 2 wash loads out of the washer stuck it in a basket and left it there for 2 days . I have rewashed the load that in the washing machine 3 times.

Picking up heavy wet washing feels like the end of the world. Hanging it out feels I'm climbing mount everest. I'm so tired and drained without reason

I'm on my own . I have no kids here in sitting silently on my living room. So I'm not even busy. But here I am getting myself into a state over washing.

Try washing smaller loads on a quicker cycle. It's faster to hang out and get dry on the drying rack if it's not overloaded.

SBHon · 01/06/2024 12:58

I get it. My trick is: Plan what you actually need for the next week ie 7 knickers, 1 bra, 7 tops, 7 bottoms, 7 socks. Wash only those things and then you’re set for the week. After you’re on top of that then sorting the rest will feel easier.

WonderingWanda · 01/06/2024 12:58

Also if it's very heavy is your machine spinning it enough? Sometimes with faster washes it's still sopping on machine so I do an extra spin.

SBHon · 01/06/2024 13:00

My other trick is: chuck a load of clothes. (Ideally sell/donate but if you’re stuck in overwhelm mode then throw away.) Fewer clothes = simpler life for me.

WonderingWanda · 01/06/2024 13:01

If you don't have a dryer our outside space to get it all dry sometimes it's worth just going to the launderette. I remember doing this one winter when my kids were babies and I was so sick of damp washing hanging around. The big tumble at the launderette could fit 2 or 3 loads in and dried it for a fiver. I had a car so I washed it all at home then just took it to dry.

Ladyluckinred · 01/06/2024 13:02

Divide into piles (whites, darks, underwear etc) and put one small pile in at a time on a shorter cycle. I always do an extra 10 minute spin at the end.

As I work from home and my washing machine is very close to my office, I often find myself behind on washing. I can usually catch up quite quickly. Do you have a dryer for lighter loads?

Don’t be hard on yourself, lovely xx

Spin it then tumble dry it . That's a lot easier than hanging wet washing out

Bramblecrumble22 · 01/06/2024 13:05

Sounds like this isn't really about washing....

stayathomer · 01/06/2024 13:10

If it feels like the end of the world then maybe you’re just too tired. Every so often I give myself a pass and throw it into the tumble dryer, even if it’s sunny outside. I let things go a little and get some sleep or read a book or go for a walk or have a shower. Hope you’re ok op x

Kind of works with one person I got to do it times 4 though.

It's on a 1400 spin plus I give an extra spin.

And yeah my shortest washing are 15 and 30 mins . It feels like time I have given an extra spin which is 10 mins. The short was seems pointless? Saying that I still do an extra spin on an hours wash to

X4 because you have three kids? How old are they? Old enough to start helping with the laundry?

I do have outside space. Plenty of good space for drying inside as well .

So there's 4 of you living in the house? Wash on quick cycle (30) minutes but add a cap of antibacterial like dettol laundry. Give it an extra spin.

Put on a podcast/audiobook/ favourite tv show you can follow without watchig every second.
I don’t mind laundry but tv on an ipad is the only way I can put myself through doing the washing up.

Put the clothes on a stand alone spin cycle before taking them out. clothes will be less wet.

Who are you washing for?

My tips are -

Every bedroom has a laundry bin.
Then wash per room as that's usually per person or 2 sharing.

Wash a load from each room as that becomes easier to manage.
Put it to dry

Whoever's clothes it is takes it off the drying thing and puts away in their bedroom.

Separate darks and lights otherwise lights get manky looking.

LindorDoubleChoc · 01/06/2024 13:25

How are you with other day to day chores and self care OP?

There will be a reason why you feel too tired and drained to do it. Have an honest think about what that could be.

It's not uncommon to get behind with the washing, especially when the weather is so abysmal - but what you describe is not really normal, in a well and able-bodied person.

My own room is a bit of a tip. The other rooms are reasonable. Bathroom hallways need a clean

Kind of works with one person I got to do it times 4 though.

I got overwhelmed as I put a wash on, someone insisted I went to A&E and I was in hospital for a week rather than a few hours as expected. It smelt terrible when I got back! And my food in the fridge!! Mushy cucumber and solidified sour milk, anyone??

It's difficult to deal with when you don't have the energy, you've put it through a few times so it should be OK now, I like a pp's suggestion of getting a few days worth of clothes clean and dry then slowly catch up with the backlog.

@SheepAndSword I hope your OK. I sounds like you went through a hard time..

And no one did the basics whilst you were in hospital.

Could you be depressed ?
Sometimes when we're in the middle of something it's hard to see the wood for the trees. I know from personal experience it's only when I've looked back I've realised I really wasn't very well .
What's your domestic set up ?
Do you have a partner ?
Don't be afraid to ask for help .

No I don't feel depressed just tired and run down.

I'm on my own . Kids do stuff . They have to tidy their rooms bring washing down . Plates in dishwasher etc.

Their rooms are more tidy than mine. Which makes me a massive prick.
