Nice things about where you live

People are so quick to notice when a place gets run down, to witness decay and desolation, but you don't often get to hear about nice places.
I just thought it might be nice to have a 'share the love's type thread, let folks know what's good!

I live on Vancouver Island, I love that the local schools have canoes for the students to use on the local waterways.
It's a lovely sunny day here, and I can hear the students singing as they paddle by.

I know it's isn't fancy, but I like it.
What's good about where you live?

We live really close to a local woodland walk that so many people drive to park at and take their dogs a walk through. We are literally the closest house and really don’t make the most of it so we have been trying to the last few weeks.

Really lovely community and events
Great school
Nice gardens with loads of birds

Seeleyboo · 30/05/2024 00:02

I have a mountain view in the distance and its a cul de sac so very quiet except for birds. Lots and lots of happy birds. It's wonderful. I can see at least two nests repeatedly used each year.

Inner London area. Buzzy area, popular with tourists. Great transport connections, 5 min walk to tube, 8 mins tube to Soho, 10 mins walk to a big Royal Park and the zoo, canal 2 min walk for paddleboarding and canoeing. Hampstead Heath 15 mins by bus for nature and views. Lots of high quality kids activities. Functional high street 3 min walk for chemist, groceries etc, high end high street 10 min walk for restaurants and cafes. Easy access to 3 major London mainline stations and Eurostar, and easy connections to all the London airports. Walking distance to major museums and universities.

Countryside one way, town the other, perfect.

DaftyLass · 30/05/2024 00:38

This is really great to hear about all these places, if I had all the money aid want to visit all of them!

If you are planning to visit here ever, I'd suggest a visit to Victoria, Parksville, Lake Cowichan, and Coombs, each amazing in a different way.

I love living ten minutes’ walk from the beach. Watching the sunrise on a winter’s morning with a hot drink, listening to my favourite tunes 🩷

The woods are about 15 steps from my front door which I absolutely love. I live in the highlands and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. My favourite coffee shop is a 10 minute drive from home and I have lots of beaches, lochs and rivers locally for beautiful walks. I even enjoy our crappy weather!

spookehtooth · 30/05/2024 01:04

Norwich UK. I love where I live. The view from most windows isn't that far, but probably ideal in a city. My front garden is a nice view, I've enough bush & trees by the front wall to mostly stop people staring & avoid needing curtains. The back of the rear is tree lined so I don't need curtains in the bedroom either. I like as much natural light as possible.

The area generally, I'm 5 mins from a river, a little further from a marsh nature reserve. 30 mins by bicycle is my local gym, another river & marsh. Many other nice places exist to visit relatively nearby for day or weekend trips

5 mins away is a footpath, into the city centre one way. In the other direction it goes about 1/2 way to the coast. A seond path near the end of that reaches the coast.
It's not a big city, so everything I want to do is accessible by bicycle. London is 2hrs away, I wouldn't want it any closer.

The lido.

These sound lovely. Note about urban decay, friend lives in small prosperous market town, neat and tidy, not run down like so many towns in UK have become. A while ago Hollywood arrived having received permission to film some of a new post-apocalypse film there. They promptly set about turning the market square into a facsimile of some of the less attractive squalid town centres that can now be found across the country. Boarded up shops, graffiti, litter and everything else you'd expect to see. Removed it all after a few days and everything was returned it to its former pristine state. I'm still puzzled as to why they had to do this when so many locations have urban decay to hand.

EffieeBriest · 30/05/2024 06:58

@newnamethanks I do live in one of those squalid towns and we have lots of film crews nowadays but mainly using the once grand architecture as a backdrop for historical plays ! It’s a good stand in for East Berlin apparently !

newnamethanks · 30/05/2024 07:03

Ah, a new growth industry! We certainly need something to seed regeneration, let's have more of it.

Catsmere · 30/05/2024 07:09

I live in a major regional Australian city. Only been here three years, but I like it a lot. I'm in one of its dodgier suburbs, but being in a retirement village am isolated from that (except the sound of motorbikes revving some nights 🙄). Being in a southern state, the weather isn't too extreme, and there are parks and touristy towns to visit if I can be bothered. There are lots of services - large hospitals, lots of nursing homes, vets, shops and the like. People seem very friendly for the most part and all my neighbours in the village are pleasant.

Justbetweenus · 30/05/2024 07:10

I live in an outer London suburb. We have woodland walks on the doorstep, lovely neighbours up and down the street, but the staff in the local indie coffee shop make it for me. They always brighten my day 😊

Squirrelsnut · 30/05/2024 07:17

It's ridiculously green and beautiful. Most villages around here are like Hobbiton.(Oxfordshire).

Polkadoteyes · 30/05/2024 07:28

Walkable to a small supermarket and range of bars and smaller shops. Good schools. Relatively safe. River nearby for nice dog walks. I needed this thread to remind myself we're lucky to live here.

CountryShepherd · 30/05/2024 07:28

View from my bedroom window. Shop and pub - 6 minute walk though...

Nice things about where you live
AllProperTeaIsTheft · 30/05/2024 07:31

I live just outside the Lake District National Park- near enough that I can be in the mountains in 20 mins, but not so near that we are swamped by tourists. I can see the fells from my window across the beautiful estuary that's 5 mins' walk from my house.

NattyTurtle · 30/05/2024 07:39

Lots of trees in my town, a good view of the mountains, a lovely park a few blocks from my flat, a lovely brand new library, mostly friendly, decent, citizens, and a nearby ski-field should I wish to ski. Rural NZ town.

OnlyYellowRoses · 30/05/2024 07:42

I'm in South Dorset so I'm a literal 10 minute walk to the beach and old harbours. There is always fresh fish and shellfish being sold daily. You're also a ten minute drive to fields, rural pasture and forests. There's plenty of country fairs and events on in the spring through to autumn so lots of things to do. In winter, it's all fairy lights and thatched cottages and pubs with real fires and roast dinners.
The schools are all good, children are safe playing out alone and mine are growing up in the same way I did, messing about in old quarries or spending it swimming with friends.
I'm never going to run out of work, I work with the elderly and seeing as it's got the highest population over 65 in the UK, it'll keep me going for a while Grin

EffieeBriest · 30/05/2024 07:43

@OnlyYellowRoses ooh sounds lovely. How much is an average property ?
