Nice things about where you live

People are so quick to notice when a place gets run down, to witness decay and desolation, but you don't often get to hear about nice places.
I just thought it might be nice to have a 'share the love's type thread, let folks know what's good!

I live on Vancouver Island, I love that the local schools have canoes for the students to use on the local waterways.
It's a lovely sunny day here, and I can hear the students singing as they paddle by.

I know it's isn't fancy, but I like it.
What's good about where you live?

OP posts:

I live in London (zone 3). Positives: friendly neighbours, safe (as can be in a city), three parks within walking distance, three good to excellent primaries within walking distance, 15 minutes walk to tube/train and shops. Leafy, quiet (those foxes though)!
I'd rather be more central, but with a teen and four animals need the space and garden.

Anotherdayanotherhangover · 29/05/2024 22:15

View from my house isn't great; we live in what would have been the valley with hills front and back; we only get to see the houses opposite. But we're on the edge of a national park, we're a tourist destination so lots of things to do/nice shops. I can see our local folly (which is my favourite place in the world) from my office window, I'm born and bred from here and I could never live anywhere else.

LynetteScavo · 29/05/2024 22:29

OP you live on Vancouver Island! It is so lovely there (well it was 25 years ago when I visited!)

I sat in my living room yesterday and noticed I have a very nice view of distant-ish trees from the back of my house. We not overlooked from the back at all. I've lived here 16 years and it's not the reason I bought the house, but it's actually quite nice.

At the moment the trees are green and the pot holes have been filled so living here is so much better than it was a few months ago.

Live next to a big park, and have a lovely local pub as a neighbour. Very quiet but I wanted to be in central London it would take me less than an hour

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 29/05/2024 22:33

We back onto woods and the deer come into our garden.

Blackcats7 · 29/05/2024 22:34

The New Forest and the sea and a nice large village/ very small town all on the doorstep.

70sShmeventies · 29/05/2024 22:35

Ancient woodlands a 5 min walk from
my house, beautiful countryside less, brilliant seaside town a 10min drive and a wonderfully historic city centre with some really beautiful streets.

Thinkbiglittleone · 29/05/2024 22:39

Community - we have a great community spirit, I love it.

Zoflorabore · 29/05/2024 22:40

I live about 6 miles from Liverpool and 10 mins drive to Knowsley Safari Park which is fab. 20 mins to loads of gorgeous beaches and parks in every direction, big ones. Where I live is part HA ( us ) and part bought houses and it had a bad name back in the 80’s but it’s the friendliest place, I’ve never once felt unsafe here and the community spirit is fab.

I have lived in a much posher area than this and I hated it, there was no community spirit at all and it f my like everyone was keeping up with the Jones’s.

This is such a nice thread! I live in sub-Saharan Africa, and am frustrated on a daily basis by life's trials and hardships here (on a different thread, I'm sure i could moan for days!), BUT the weather is lovely, we have palm trees, mango trees, bananas, sugar cane etc in our garden, if I drive around with my kids for 20 minutes in the car, we can see monkeys, zebra, giraffe, rhino, occasionally some big cats... markets are full of fresh, cheap, local produce and no plastic packaging in sight, kids can be barefoot outside from morning till night having an old-fashioned childhood (building dens, planting little veg plots, making up games from bottle caps/ seeds), we can watch the sunset from around a fire pit with drinks in hand.

Would I trade it for paved roads, decent schools, good medical care and properly stocked supermarkets? Probably! But it's actually not a terrible life, all things considered.

Wildlife, stunning countryside. Semi rural in North Herts. The town centre is pretty grim but the outskirts are beautiful. Lots of woodland, beautiful walks, gorgeous villages. Lots of history.

This sounds idyllic. I'm sure it isn't in some parts but my goodness, the experiences that some of us will never have and they're right there in front of you. Thanks for sharing!

Around five minutes walk to the doctors, dentist, vet, library, various supermarkets, post office, a variety of shops, regular farmers market, buses to all sorts of places, and four different parks. I love the location especially as I don't drive anymore for medical reasons, so it's good to have everything easily accessible. I find it reassuring and incredibly practical.

Carebearsonmybed · 29/05/2024 22:56

Where I live is so green.

ConstantlyCooking · 29/05/2024 22:58

I live on a hill so have great views and a feeling of space. We back onto a park so see trees from the back garden.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 29/05/2024 22:59

I love where I live. Nothing unusual or beautiful as its a big housing development outside a suburb. Kind of like the last suburb as just beyond us is fields and cows. It's a purpose built village model with a little commercial area with a pub, shop, pharmacy and primary school. It's on a slip road off the city ring road so accessible to all sides and overlooking a harbour at the bottom of the hill with lovely walkways. It is the most wonderful place for a child to be raised. Kids call in and out of houses. There's always a game of soccer on the green or kids swinging off the old trees that pre date the houses. Friday afternoon is almost comical, all the kids go to the shop to spend pocket money and they bring their coins and hang around munching on the little benches around the square. We have lovely neighbours in horseshoe cul de sac of 12 houses, but all very busy with families so we don't socialise much but I feel we know each other and could rely on each other in a crisis. We just don't have any stress here. Pls God it will stay that way.

I've definitely painted it in a good light..! We rarely have electricity, and have to filter our water at home to make it safe - so please don't feel too jealous! We are very jealous of the UK so often!

Everywhere has good and not so easy things :) I'm enjoying reading about all the things that aren't familiar to my life in this thread :)

TheFormidableMrsC · 29/05/2024 23:18

@FoxEaredBat Oh goodness, these are things I don't have to worry about in the UK. It is fair to say that I'd struggle to cope with those things that we take totally for granted. You have reminded me that I should be more than grateful. I hope things improve for you Flowers

TheFormidableMrsC · 29/05/2024 23:22

@FoxEaredBat Also, the water where I live tastes of low level bleach and chemicals. While we are fortunate to have "safe" water, I'm not sure how safe it actually is when it comes to our long term health. There's lots of things in the UK that are a worry!

Strokethefurrywall · 29/05/2024 23:24

I live in the Caribbean close to the beach, it's eternally 30oc and my commute to my office is less than 10 mins.

I have bats, rabbits, hares, sheep, cows, chickens and deer passing by or hanging out daily at my house, it is peaceful and beautiful and most noises I hear are natural ones. A train in the distance, and if the wind is blowing a certain way, maybe some distant motorway traffic are the main exceptions.

Locally there is an independent fruit and veg guy who comes to town twice a week so I gear my shopping round that as his stuff is fresher and keeps longer than the supermarket stuff which all seems to wilt or get mouldy so quickly now. A visit to the stall is also a social occasion as you get a nice chat while you pay.

There is often some cultural event on, festivals, shows, events the small town I'm near punches above it's weight in social occasions.

People are mostly friendly and approachable but the demographic is mixed so the air is not too rarified.

I love it.

Do you mind saying where? I'm searching currently for somewhere to settle!
