Sister just had some guy walk into her hotel room.

DS is staying in London for work (a Hilton in Croydon I think) and she just rang me, a little shooketh.

She came in after being on site (work) and locked the door behind her and she is sure she put on the bolt thing (will try to add a picture).

Some random guy (a hotel employee) just walked in unaccounted - she was a little way around the corner so poked her head around and said hello. He just left (saying nowt) so she followed him outside to the hallway and he said he was just conducting a "spot check".

I do not like this. She's a single young woman on her own. It makes me think of Lucy Spraggan's awful experience.

I have told her to go down, report it and asked to be put in another room. That way he's on notice and he also hopefully shouldn't know where she's gone.

Any reason a hotel employee would do this?

You're not being paranoid at all. That's unnerving and well done to your sister for complaining. How disappointing that so many women end up barricading the door when they stay in a hotel because men refuse to behave like civilised human beings. Can we not ever just be safe?!

ClimbEveryLadder · 28/05/2024 22:49

A man broke into my room at night at a Hilton. Terrifying, but fortunately i was working really late so still awake. I asked the hotel to move me to another room but barely slept. Invoked their good nights sleep guarantee to get my night refunded when the day manager was being a prick and denying it had happened the next day.

I won’t stay in Hilton’s anymore although I’m sure other hotel chains are probably just as bad.

depressing that so many women have had similar experiences

Doveyouknow · 28/05/2024 22:51

It's far more likely the employee thought the room was empty and was going in there to skive than he was looking to attack anyone (especially as he left as soon as he saw your sister). It is scary though and I don't blame her for blocking the door.

Also, she's getting a wedge tomorrow!

Can she get Amazon to deliver to the hotel. There are lots of portable door security devices available.

Houseplantmad · 28/05/2024 22:56

I’m outraged reading all these measures that women have to take to feel safe when alone in a hotel room ie that you have to barricade yourself in a room with a chair to avoid attack, theft or worse.
Why are we putting up with this - how can it be stopped? It’s clearly a major problem given the number of similar experiences relayed on this thread. It makes me so angry but feeling powerless.

FOJN · 28/05/2024 22:56

NotADailyMailJournalist · 28/05/2024 22:41

Be careful with wedges tho. How would firemen etc get in?

With an axe.

OutOfTheHouse · 28/05/2024 23:10

If, and that is a big if, he really was a staff member there on legitimate grounds then surely he would have apologised there and then.

MzHz · 28/05/2024 23:25

This is so worrying. I travel quite a bit for work and it’s never occurred to me that this might happen!

I need to sort something out to keep myself safe now.

@DrStrangesSmarterSister I just use a bog standard one. No way, with lugging my work bag and clothes around on trains, I cd cope with some extra special heavy weighted contraption!

It’s not at all heavy.

SleepPrettyDarling · 28/05/2024 23:40

She should ask to see the duty manager on checkout, and wait until she does. She should ask if it was noted in the incident book, and if it will be brought to the Heads of Department daily meeting. Staff should never walk in without knocking, and when knocking they should identify themselves, eg calling out ‘housekeeping’ or ‘room service.’

ILikeDungs · 28/05/2024 23:41

So women can either be at risk of robbery or rape, or they can take precautions against entry and be at risk of burning to death in a fire.

Isn't being a woman AMAZING? Who wouldn't be a woman? It's the best.

maw1681 · 28/05/2024 23:41

So frightening! If he'd made a mistake surely he would have apologised and explained? Has she reported it to reception? I don't think you can be too careful tbh

Incakewetrust · 28/05/2024 23:48

How scary! I hope she's ok OP.

determinedtomakethiswork · 28/05/2024 23:51

Surely if someone was going to do a spot check it would be when the cleaning staff was still there so that they could be told to fix any problems? Surely they would know which rooms were unoccupied and if they knew a room was occupied they would knock on the door first.

There's no way this man was doing a spot check.

Maybe a tweet to the CEO would do the trick. It's pretty clear that safety isn't a priority for some hotels and that needs to change

FOJN · 28/05/2024 23:51

Here's a link to a range of portable door security devices. Most of them look fairly lightweight and easy to use. You can also get alarmed door wedges.

SevernWonders · 28/05/2024 23:57

Jesus how scary, I hope your sister is ok but she should definitely complain.

Absolutely crazy that women should have to barricade themselves into a hotel room to stop men walking in on them.

PoopingAllTheWay · 29/05/2024 00:00

She needs to ring head office first thing tomorrow and get this person sacked

Temporaryname158 · 29/05/2024 00:13

I think your sister has done all she can for tonight, however in the morning I would report this to the police. He may be known to them if not his employer

Dibbydoos · 29/05/2024 00:54

They'd knock. It wasn't a spot check.

WTF. Complain like hell.

Deadlock the door - I bought a gadget from Amazon so I can lock the door in hotels properly, but if your DS has nothing with her, there are some hacks here m.youtube.com/watch?v=dx1X3IiNNb8

SherrieElmer · 29/05/2024 01:01

That man was not up to a good. Report him to police immediately.

LifeInTheRaw · 29/05/2024 01:06

It happened to me a couple of years ago when staying at a hotel in Chester.

The person didn't get as far as entering fully, as I yelled out "Oi"...
It was very distressing and I report it immediately.
Was apologised to and was given courtesy evening meal drinks etc.
I bought myself a security thingy too, coz although it's unlikely to occur again, it helps my peace of mind to know it's there.
OP, it is a thing, and your poor sister coped really well.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 29/05/2024 01:25

somethingwickedlivesnextdoor · 28/05/2024 22:31

The only problem with all those defences is what happens if there is a fire or fire alarm in the night??

The employee was deeply dodgy and should be investigated. Has the hotel said what is happening with that?

I'd rather burn than be raped.

That's a purely personal opinion though.

Combattingthemoaners · 29/05/2024 04:31

Hope she’s okay. This is the shit women have to contend with that men don’t understand! Boils my blood.

OR he was hoping she was asleep or in the shower rather than fully alert.

SphincterSaysWhat · 28/05/2024 19:27

It's the saying nothing and just heading back to the hall that was off. Also his entry was completely unannounced. Like, completely.

I don't think that's being paranoid.

She’s got instincts for a reason. I would leave the hotel. That’s fucked!
