Things you would never admit to IRL because they'd think you were weird!

This is a topic that's been going round in my head lately as a thought popped into my mind a few weeks back and is becoming the itch that can't be scratched!

As I was driving home one day, I saw a random lorry with a place name on the side that I didn't recognise, and I thought "I wonder where I'd end up if I just followed that lorry?"

This has now become a regular topic of thought, wondering how long I'd drive for before I gave up following someone and just went home. Or wondering if they might see me driving behind them and realise I'm following them (that would be an awkward convo with the police - "why are you following that vehicle", "Well, officer, I was a bit bored and just wondered where they were going and thought I'd tag along"!)

In my head I've even gone so far as to thinking that if I were single it could be a nice day out! Pack an overnight bag, hop on the motorway and choose a vehicle to follow to see where I end up. Eventually give up and find a hotel for the night (or give myself enough time to drive home again if I couldn't find anything).

So... I realise I am weird for thinking this, but MN is a "safe space" where we can all admit our oddities without being outed, so what are yours?!

After watching a documentary about Levi Bellfield I would wonder what would happen if I went missing whilst walking home - particularly if I had to walk past a white van. I would think about who would have been the last person to see me.
Bonkers, I know!

OrlandointheWilderness · 28/05/2024 17:53

When I was with XH I took a photo of him in a pub. My first thought when I got it developed (that's how long ago it was..!) was as that it looked like a photo of a missing man 😂

Yougotwhatstuckwhere · 28/05/2024 20:54

I would love to be able to walk away from my life as I know it.
Just disappear.

Beautifulbythebay · 28/05/2024 20:56

First dh I used to will him to die in a car accident on his way home from work. For years.
Until I found the guts to ltb.

HamBagelNoCheese · 28/05/2024 20:57

I spend far too much time thinking about whether I've ever drank the same water molecule twice

Ah, that's horrible. I hope you're in a better place now.

Well done for having the courage to leave!

Now I'm going to think this too!

I've often thought about whether I've seen a particular bit of water before when I'm looking at a river.

As a child I had an imaginative internal world - a sort of fantasy narrative - running in my head a lot of the time. When I was bored, stuck in the car, or just at night before I went to sleep I'd check into that other world and pick up the story.

When I got older, I spent less time there (too many adult worries!) but it all still exists in my imagination, and I can drift off there to check how all the "characters" are doing when I like.

I did write in my tweens and teens, but never managed to finish anything substantial. I'm guessing most authors have a similarly strong internal world that they just don't talk about that much... because well, it is sort of weird! It has been such a non-stop feature of my life for so long, but one I never mention to anyone IRL.

Temporaryname158 · 28/05/2024 21:11

I still have a blanket/comforter. The only people who know are my two children. I can’t sleep without it. I am sure everyone would think I was weird if they knew

trevthecat · 28/05/2024 21:12

I have a detailed, internal plan for nearly any natural disaster, extreme weather or of course, a zombie apocalypse.

I've hinted at it to dh but he didn't get the need so I didn't share my full plans.

He will be thankful if a -50'c cold snap hits the NW coast and we have to survive in our front room with the log burner and cats for warmth!!

Oh me too! At different points it has been a family, a village, a spaceship crew, and sometimes characters from tv/books who made the wrong decisions and I needed to fix.

I have a weird fascination with the idea of hiding and sleeping overnight somewhere you shouldn't.

Along came youtube and the first few videos from a couple of young guys hiding in ... IKEA, the bedding dept, after closing time, just filming themselves quietly hiding and getting a bit of sleep avoiding security ect. Then just merging with the first customers when they started to walk by and leaving the store like a normal customer ...

Now when i go round IKEA i'm secretly choosing which mock up bedroom i'd hide away in for the night 😅

Love watching the folks who camp out on bushy roundabouts ect.

God knows why but it's fascinating!

LakeTiticaca · 28/05/2024 21:18

When in slow traffic on the motorway and I seee the registration plates. I imagine they are personalised plates and make up names, for instance if the letters on the plate JAS, I imagine the driver is called Jennifer Anne Smith, or PKT would be Paula Kathryn Thompson etc
People would think I am batshit if they knew 🤣🤣

namechangeforthisoneforsure · 28/05/2024 21:20

I am literally addicted to watching blackhead and pimple popping videos on Instagram and YouTube.
And when I get bored of that I come on Mumsnet 🙄

I do this! I'm forever planning escape routes and contingency plans in my head for everything from air missile attack, terrorist attack and adverse weather. I'm thought of as weird when I've mentioned it so don't anymore.

But those mocking will be grateful to me when hostile aliens attack Smile

Did you know we have a sporners corner?

I'm sure you do. Just checking 😊

QuitChewingMyPlectrum · 28/05/2024 21:21

I used to wonder what would happen if I stood up in a restaurant or a train station or something and started singing - sort of like an impromptu flash mob where everyone got excited and joined in.
I've come pretty close to actually doing it……

Ihopeithinkiknow · 28/05/2024 21:28

I have got no idea how this came about but at least twice a week me and my 14 year old daughter talk about whether there is a zebra anywhere in the world that has tasted mayonnaise 😂 we get quite annoyed because surely there must have been one somewhere at some point but how would we ever really know 😂 we haven't bothered asking anyone else's opinion because we don't want to look batshit hahaha

ChristmasJumpers · 28/05/2024 21:34

I sometimes have intrusive thoughts. Walking past people at the train station, I'll think "what if they just pushed me on the tracks right now?".
I also think about how much faith we put in drivers not to just randomly decide to run us down as we cross the road.
If I'm in the cinema and someone walks in during the film I'll tense up in case they're going to shoot us all 😧

BirthdayRainbow · 28/05/2024 21:35

I think that is lovely @HiddenBooks .

GreenMarigold · 28/05/2024 21:35

When I’m walking in the woods I often ponder on what it would be like if I had somehow gone back in time and when I go round the next corner everything and everyone will be from hundreds of years ago. What skills would I bring to the people I come across? What would they make of me, in modern clothes and wearing glasses? How easily would I understand them? Do I know enough science to advance their way of life? Should I even try to in any case? So many questions.

TheThingIsYeah · 28/05/2024 21:36

Same here. I like to watch Blot Outdoors Show for example on YouTube. Some of those stealth camps are in right shitholes but he merrily has a few beers and a bottle of "whaskey" to see him through the night. The ones with Little Mick aka the human dorsal fin are proper funny.

Manchestermummax3 · 28/05/2024 21:36

I try to memorise random people when out & about (walking to town, someone on the bus, cash point queue etc)
Their appearance mainly, clothing, height, build. Also if they are walking in a certain way.... suspiciously, or with a limp... anything that makes them different.
Just incase something really bad happens to them or they are a wrong 'un & it's my detailed description to the police that solves the case! 🤣

A family member is a retired police officer, I'm assuming that's why I do it, but they've never once mentioned to do it or anything!

Pigeonqueen · 28/05/2024 21:39

I have names for all the birds that visit my garden. Only Ds and dh really know about it. I’m sure quite often they’re actually the same bird or not the one I think they are but I just enjoy it. I have wood pigeons Dave, Craig and Cecil. And a blackbird called Derek who has 3 babies that are nearly as big as him that he’s been raising and feeding in my flowerbed. So cute. And a blue tit called Barbie. I love feeding them all and have a special custom built huge bird feeder that takes up a huge space in our garden.
