Things you would never admit to IRL because they'd think you were weird!

This is a topic that's been going round in my head lately as a thought popped into my mind a few weeks back and is becoming the itch that can't be scratched!

As I was driving home one day, I saw a random lorry with a place name on the side that I didn't recognise, and I thought "I wonder where I'd end up if I just followed that lorry?"

This has now become a regular topic of thought, wondering how long I'd drive for before I gave up following someone and just went home. Or wondering if they might see me driving behind them and realise I'm following them (that would be an awkward convo with the police - "why are you following that vehicle", "Well, officer, I was a bit bored and just wondered where they were going and thought I'd tag along"!)

In my head I've even gone so far as to thinking that if I were single it could be a nice day out! Pack an overnight bag, hop on the motorway and choose a vehicle to follow to see where I end up. Eventually give up and find a hotel for the night (or give myself enough time to drive home again if I couldn't find anything).

So... I realise I am weird for thinking this, but MN is a "safe space" where we can all admit our oddities without being outed, so what are yours?!

I would love to be able to walk away from my life as I know it.
Just disappear.

I like this idea.

Moons ago I actually googled this. Basically, how to disappear & start over... FYI google wasn't v helpful. Don't recommend

I try to memorise random people when out & about (walking to town, someone on the bus, cash point queue etc)
Their appearance mainly, clothing, height, build. Also if they are walking in a certain way.... suspiciously, or with a limp... anything that makes them different.
Just incase something really bad happens to them or they are a wrong 'un & it's my detailed description to the police that solves the case! 🤣

A family member is a retired police officer, I'm assuming that's why I do it, but they've never once mentioned to do it or anything!

I do this!

Sometimes I wish I could take the law into my own hands. Our justice system is a joke. Broken beyond repair.

DonaldJohnTrump · 24/06/2024 22:08

I have sometimes wondered when in a meeting at work..

"What if I am suffering from Tourettes Syndrome and I am saying really dreadful, obscene things and everybody round me keeps quiet, because they know about my condition - whilst I don't"

But I expect everybody thinks this, don't they?

i often wonder how long it took for inventions like creating fire, or wheels, to spread across the work when human colonies where so small and so spread out and sparse. Or were they discovered / invented in more than one place?

I think this about drinking cows milk - who first captured a cow and tried drinking its milk. Ew.

Oh! Talking about drama series. On LA Law back in the annals of history one of the characters, an older woman. Was talking to another character while waiting for the lift. It arrived and she got in but the lift wasn't there even though the doors opened. I have never just nonchalantly stepped into a lift since watching that scene!

Me too! I check everytime because of this storyline

EBearhug · 25/06/2024 01:03

For the avoidance of doubt, it’s 1485

1492, discovery of the new world. Henry VII was still a mediaevalist in most ways. (Though that's a rather English perspective on 1485.)

BitOutOfPractice · 25/06/2024 05:26

@EBearhug oh you’d fit right in here! You’ve nailed your colours to the mast and you’re prepared to die on that hill. Love it. My dd says 1500. We continue to debate it at least weekly 😂

EBearhug · 25/06/2024 07:41

I am prepared to settle on "around the end of the 15th century" because it's not like someone hit a light switch and it's an instant thing.

BitOutOfPractice · 25/06/2024 07:48

You see this is the sort of throwaway comment that can prolong an argument for years. Years!

We do have fun with it. Everyone else just rolls their eyes.

The end of the medieval period in England is generally agreed to be 1485 amongst academics, the battle of Bosworth and the death of Richard III. Henry VII is considered early modern and is not a 'medievalist'. A medievalist is someone who studies the medieval period. What you might have meant @EBearhug is that he appears medieval, which in many ways of course he was.

On the continent, the generally accepted date for the end of the medieval period is 1500.

I'm an academic in this field.

I spend far too much time thinking about whether I've ever drank the same water molecule twice

One of my Biology teacher's favourite lines was that if you live in London you've shared your drinking water with at least 4 other people. (He lived in rural Kent).

BitOutOfPractice · 25/06/2024 10:24

@Username947531 you have no idea how often I’m going to quote you to my DD 😂 we are both history graduates ourselves and thoroughly enjoy our faux argument. We have had all sorts of fun over the years. I had a fake sign made which I took to Bosworth saying “modern history started here” and all sorts! I am very jealous that you get to do this for a living!

Thanks. I'm only part time (I have a day job as well) but I love it.. Glad to have settled the date debate. You might find people in Spain for example dating it to 1492 but in this country, absolutely it is the death of Richard III that is the official end of the medieval period. I love the idea of a sign but if I am being really pedantic (which I am of course), it is 'the early modern period starts here'. 'Modern history' is really post 1750. Of course they are all artificial constructs but they help historians make sense of things, especially when we are asked something we don't know and can just say 'not my period, I'm an early/late medievalist/early modernist' etc 😂.

Off to name change as I've just massively outed myself...

EBearhug · 25/06/2024 12:31

Modern history' is really post 1750.

Which is where things get properly interesting, says person who never actually became an industrial archaeologist.

I have an imaginary friend called Natalie who's also actually a ghost. We talk aloud to each other. She has a strong Glaswegian accent. She's a bit of a bitch in an "I call a spade a spade" kind of way.

OP - your idea of following a random car to wherever the fuck its going would make an amazing TV series.

Ooh - in that case I copyright it now! 😜

Not sure if it's been mentioned upthread but do other people see faces on cars? I got a new car last year and when I was being shown about I didn't tune in properly to the salesman as I was thinking, no..too grumpy..too angry.. ooh that one looks happy etc. Eventually settled on a car I love driving and in my budget but I can't help but be slightly disappointed as it has a sly look.

I saw something on social media the other day that Teslas, particularly white ones, look like Voldemort and now I can't unsee it!

The most "happy" looking vintage car I'd love to have is an Austin Healey.

Me! I bought a car a few years ago that looked exactly like Peter Sallis the actor from 'Last of the Summer Wine'!

Well, maybe not exactly like him, but similar enough.

Sweetpea1532 · 02/07/2024 21:16

@Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong ...you and @Vroomfondleswaistcoat aren't the only ones...my little grandson told me my car looked happy and asked if he could hug and kiss it.🤣
It's a 1995 xjs Jaguar convertible.
