Would you eat minced beef one day out of date?

I always worry about food dates especially meat as I have IBS and a super sensitive gut.

I wouldn’t be eating it myself as I can’t tolerate red meat but don’t want to give my dd and dh food poisoning, dh says it’s fine if it’s just one day out.

Would you eat it?

Yes - only because I knew someone from that industry who reassured me 24 hours over for beef is fine. I wouldn’t with chicken though.

readingmakesmehappy · 27/05/2024 13:09

If it still smelled ok, yes

wutheringkites · 27/05/2024 13:10

Probably fine but it depends on how it looks/ smells. If it looks grey or smells off then no.

@TeenLifeMum

What about Pork is it OK to eat 24 hours 🤔 out of date aswell then?

Thanks 👍

Floralnomad · 27/05/2024 13:10

If it looked and smelled ok yes

DustyLee123 · 27/05/2024 13:10

No

TwoBlueFish · 27/05/2024 13:11

Yes, done it lots of times as long as it smells ok.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 27/05/2024 13:13

use your eyes and nose.

as dh is happy to eat it it's not a problem as you're not eating it anyway.

MonsteraMama · 27/05/2024 13:14

I would but I have an iron gut, I've eaten things months out of date. Decades in once instance.

Realistically the chances of there being anything wrong with it after only one day are absolutely minute. If neither your DD or DH have any gut issues I wouldn't worry about it at all. Give it a big sniff, if it smells ok and isn't greying it'll be reet.

It doesn't magically expire at midnight. It's an estimate. If it looks OK, smells OK and the packet isn't distended, go nuts

If it looked and smelled ok yes

This, provided it had been kept in the fridge, but not pork or chicken.

WimpoleHat · 27/05/2024 13:15

Is it grey and slimy? Does it smell bad? If not, it’s fine - just cook it well to set your mind at rest.

FlambeJones · 27/05/2024 13:15

Yes. The meat I buy comes from the butchers, it just has the date bought not a use by date so I use my judgement.

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2024 13:16

I only don't eat meat that looks or smells funny!

Ineedanewsofa · 27/05/2024 13:16

Generally if meat looks ok and smells ok then it’s ok to cook and eat. With mince I’d make doubly sure it’s cooked all the way through but I wouldn’t chuck it unless it stank/had gone brown

I don’t think I would with pork. With a chop or loin steak I might just sniff but sausages and mince I would risk (but we don’t eat much pork as dd3 loves pigs).

TwattyMcFuckFace · 27/05/2024 13:18

Yes, I always rely on my nose and eyes rather than dates.

Bjorkdidit · 27/05/2024 13:29

Pretty much anything that's been properly refrigerated will be fine a day past the use by date. If it's looks OK, it will be OK.

Later I'm having scallops that are technically a day out of date (bought them reduced, put them in the freezer, took them out yesterday to defrost and will cook them later). I have no concerns that they'll be anything other than absolutely fine.

Thisagainandagain · 27/05/2024 13:33

Yes of course, but I'd cook it first.

That’s exactly what dh says. He’s happy to eat it so I’ll give dd something else.

DoYouSmokePaul · 27/05/2024 13:34

Possibly not for steak tartare, but cooked, absolutely.

Whostolemyporkpie · 27/05/2024 13:36

Dh is more than happy to eat it and as it was a small pack (was going to bulk it out with veg) he can have it to himself. Ds won’t be in for dinner now so I’ll give dd something else as she’s not overly keen on meat anyhow.

It wouldn’t occur to me not to.

Nope
