Would you eat minced beef one day out of date?

I always worry about food dates especially meat as I have IBS and a super sensitive gut.

I wouldn’t be eating it myself as I can’t tolerate red meat but don’t want to give my dd and dh food poisoning, dh says it’s fine if it’s just one day out.

Would you eat it?

Frequently do, wouldn’t give to small DC, frail or unwell folk or visitors.

BobbyBiscuits · 27/05/2024 13:48

Minced meat is much more risky than say, a whole lump of beef. The bacteria etc can cover every piece of the mince, whereas the meat would only have it on the outside.
Having said that, if it's still pink and has no odour then I'd say it's fine. If any vague whiff or greying then I'd chuck it.

I always assume that they add at least a day on to the use by - it doesn’t just suddenly go off and they need to cover themselves.

Just smell it. It will be fine.

Assume you are the descendant of thousands of generations of humans who have got to where you are now by using their senses to decide if something is dodgy or not.

(Apart from shellfish and paté, don't fuck with those)

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 27/05/2024 17:58

Any meat or fish can be out of date but fine, or it can be in-date but gone off. I use my nose to tell - with meat and fish it is obvious.

Possibly not for steak tartare, but cooked, absolutely.

You wouldn't use bought mince for steak tartare anyway! The mince you buy in a shop is not produced in the right way to be safe to eat raw.

It doesn't magically expire at midnight. It's an estimate. If it looks OK, smells OK and the packet isn't distended, go nuts

This is what I always tell my kids - 'how do you think the meat knows the time?'

Most things are fine for a few days beyond the sell by or use by date, if they smell and look all right. Cook it thoroughly and you don't have much to worry about.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/05/2024 18:06

Yes.

FloofyBear · 27/05/2024 18:08

If it's been stored correctly then yes, it doesn't turn on the stroke of
Midnight

wendycupcakes · 27/05/2024 18:08

Ive eaten much worse your be fine.

DelilahBucket · 27/05/2024 18:10

If it smells okay then yes. Don't necessarily rely on the colour, supermarket meat has oxygen in the packaging to make it the bright red we all deem to be "fresh". All of our meat comes from the butchers, none of it has any dates on it and our beef is never bright red unless it has just been minced.

Whostolemyporkpie · 27/05/2024 18:49

He’s eaten it and thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful. Sure he’ll be fine!

Yes providing the fridge is working properly. And it's been thoroughly cooked.

Changingplace · 27/05/2024 19:15

Nothing goes off at the turn of midnight, I trust how absolutely everything looks/smells rather than by date, and I often get meat from the butchers anyway with no date on whatsoever.
