Shamelessly asking for medical advice

sandygrapes · 27/05/2024 06:22

I've woken up this morning and couldn't wee

I did a little 'push' and a trickle came out Blush it was awful because there was a lot of pressure like there is when you wake and need a wee

Anyway, the only way I could get it to come was to push a little at the urethra area. Clean hands, obviously. And I know you shouldn't do that! Infections and whatever else, but it's literally the only thing that helped

I have had a warm bath and no joy. I still really need a wee but not as bad as when I first woke up

Has anyone had this before? I haven't. And I've had kidney sepsis. I couldn't wee properly more than a few bloody tinged drops, which was a sign. But this feels different. Like it's 'clogged up'

Be grateful for any advice. I have googled and not a lot comes up other than crazy stuff like kidney disease and terminal illness, of which I doubt I have developed overnight Grin

Being unable to wee is a medical emergency. At the very least call 111.

Pinkypinkyplonk · 27/05/2024 06:27

There are a number of things this could be. Some serious some not so. A and E , or at least ring 111

FOJN · 27/05/2024 06:30

Urinary retention. I would agree with calling 111 at the very least but in all honesty if I was you I would go to A&E. Do it now before they get busy.

A&E, you could ring 111 but they will likely just send you to hospital anyway. You will likely be temporarily catheterised while they investigate.

sandygrapes · 27/05/2024 06:33

Oh Gosh, didn't realise it would be an A&E job! Sad

I will call 111 right now and get them to refer so I can at least say they told me to go

Another vote for A&E

RedHelenB · 27/05/2024 06:36

Have you had a drink yet this morning?

DeathMetalMum · 27/05/2024 06:36

I don't think I'd bother with 111. I'd just save the time and go now. It could be on the quiet side. You also could be a while waiting for 111.

sandygrapes · 27/05/2024 06:37

111 online have recommended this

I did click that I can't pass urine or only a few drops

I think I'm going to head down to A&E because I've got DC so better to be seen early and be told I'm a time waster than let it get worse

Have you had a drink yet this morning?

No. But never do before a wee when I get up

A&E! Urinary retention is an emergency even if the cause is not sinister. I self cathiterise following an accident. I woke up a few days afterwards and just couldn't wee. They should insert a catheter and do a bladder scan.

Have you any idea of the cause? Could be something as simple to address as a UTI or even constipation can cause difficulties too.

Riverlee · 27/05/2024 06:41

Had you got any lower back ache or pain in the pelvic area?

sandygrapes · 27/05/2024 06:42

No pain anywhere. And didn't sting

Just can't wee

But for some reason, pressing a finger on the area seems to help it trickle. A bit like when a plumber uses a plunger and gets things to shift!

Not sure why that helps

K0OLA1D · 27/05/2024 06:50

As above I would get medical advice ASAP. Its an emergency not being able to wee

Do you suffer from UTIs? Or constipation?

schoolgrinch · 27/05/2024 06:55

Ignore 111. Medical emergency. A&E. Now.

determinedtomakethiswork · 27/05/2024 07:17

I've never even heard of this as a problem! I hope you get sorted out quickly at the hospital.

Bananasplitz97 · 27/05/2024 07:40

I’d get to walk in for opening. I’ve always had good experiences with walk in including instant referrals to paeds / urology when needed

Villagetoraiseachild · 27/05/2024 07:49

Good luck, hope it gets sorted soon.
It might be that you are passing a small kidney stone.

sandygrapes · 27/05/2024 08:31

Just wanted to update that I got to A&E and before signing in with triage nurse, I went for a wee

Passed a big wee as easily as anything Hmm needless to say I walked out! Felt a 'scratch' feeling and then a sudden ability to just wee normally

Not sure what that was but absolutely fine now (have even gone again since and been okay)

This sounds very much like some kind of blockage. I think you should see your GP and discuss the entire event. You may have a buildup of urine acid crystals around the neck of your urethra. If this is the base and you don’t treat it, it can stretch out your urethra and cause continence issues when you are older.

Pinkypinkyplonk · 27/05/2024 08:52

Medic here, I would agree with the advice to see your gp and get checked out. Glad you’re ok though

Do you feel any numbness anywhere?

DatingDinosaur · 27/05/2024 08:59

This happens to me occasionally when my bladder is over-full in a morning. I can't go first thing but give it half an hour or so (usually after my first cuppa) and away I go. No pain and no problems.

The feeling's similar to cystitis (urge to go but can't) so I usually go grab a carton of cranberry juice and drink that throughout the day.

I find I can re-create the feeling (not intentionally!) if I hold on to my wee - eg. if I'm out and about and there are no loos nearby.

I've also wondered about a small/unhardened kidney stone but seeing as I can recreate the situation I'm more inclined to think its my bladder being irritated by having too much wee in it and an over-effective 'stopper' mechanism (iyswim).

Hummingbirdie · 27/05/2024 09:25

I would drink lots of water and reasses in an hour

Did you tell them you were leaving or hadn't you checked in yet?

Theunamedcat · 27/05/2024 09:28

Never mind I didn't read the first line
