Can I get in trouble for doing this

I'm mid 40s . For a long time I have been trying to find out why I went to a school for children with learning difficulties. I know i have learning difficulties but I don't really know what they are.

So I heard I may be able to find out via my medical records we are talking 35+ years ago though. Anyway I went on to the Web site thing for my gp surgery. It said to access my medical history I would need to send photo ID it gave the common ones for driving licence. Passport ID card. Then it had the option of other so I pressed on that abd it gave me other options. I did not understand what it was really.

So here's what I done I recently sent for photo ID on the government site that will allow me to vote. It has a photo of myself and other personal details. So I took a photo of that and sent that to the gp as my photo ID. It wasn't even on the list as an option.

Can i get into any sort of trouble for using it?

You won't get into trouble.

The guide for photo ID says you can't use it for anything else:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/voter-authority-certificate-easy-read-guide

Yeah I just has another look it says on the back.

You can use this voter authority certificate to prove who you are when voting in person at a polling station. This certificate is not valid for any other purpose.

That's OK that's life. I just don't want to get into trouble

Ah love, I hope you can get the answers you're looking for.

Though does it really matter why your parents ( or other carers) thought it was the best option for you? Were you unhappy there?

Anywat to answer your question, no, you won't get in trouble but they may not accept it (but they might)

"Did you miss that OP has learning difficulties and is asking for help, so probably finds forms like that difficult ?
Or did you just want to kick them when they're struggling ?"

I agree OwwOww......

Go to your GP and speak to someone, they should be able to help you get access to your online records.

When it comes to passports and getting a professional to sign, there is an option to also have a 'member of the community in good standing' so that is basically anyone who doesn't have a criminal record/history of trouble who knows you and has done for a few years and can sign to say you the person in the photo.

I have signed for a few people and I'm not on the list of accepted professions.

I honestly don't know anyone. I don't have friends . I only talk to my children. And 1 sibling

Op might your parents have some of the information you are looking for?

My children have learning difficulties and they are adults now but I still have a folder full of records from meetings and tests and their sen statements. I have more information than a doctor would have.

LIZS · 25/05/2024 17:49

But not all records are digitised or available on the nhs app. I recently tried ti get some childhood outpatient records but they were already destroyed. Even my adult Gp records are not available digitally pre 2014.

Assuming this is a dsar they would need to photocopy paper records. Op, have you tried making an appointment with gp or practice manager to review them in person.

RuthW · 25/05/2024 17:51

Go into your surgery and ask for help. You can do it without the required id if you are in the UK. (This is part of my job)

Not all your notes will be available so you will need to ask for the rest and they may be given on paper.

Sorry I'm a bit confused. What would I say to them ?

Possibly, it depends on the nhs trust policy as to how long they are retained. Gp may differ to hospital though.

LIZS · 25/05/2024 17:58

Explain what you are hoping to clarify and from what time period, then ask how you can access any available records if you do not have listed id.

Life's too short to worry about shit like that

Dopeydoris44 · 25/05/2024 18:00

Could I email the school. Even though it's been 35+ years ?

The school still exists its still for children with learning difficulties. But it seems to be more of an autism type school now. If could have been back then to I guess but maybe I didn't know.

I understand why you want to know.

You might get useful help if you can get a charity to provide advocacy, or get some legal advice from a free legal clinic - often universities have these.

Good luck finding answers Flowers

You won't get into trouble.
But you have a right to see your medical records and to know why you went to a special school and what learning difficulties you may have.
Can you ask your GPs surgery to help you access your records?

TroysMammy · 25/05/2024 18:04

I'm sure they want id to make sure they are giving a patient's information to the patient and not some nosy parker. Do they know you in the surgery as a long standing patient? If so ask for a chat face to face with the Practice Manager and supply your birth certificate and proof of address.

I've been a receptionist for 15 years so I pretty much know the regular patients and I've confirmed "known to surgery staff as long standing patient" and signed my name as confirmation. Although I know not all surgeries and staff can be flexible.

You could , although they may not hold archived records there. You would need proof of id to see those too,

Getting into trouble? You just provided some ID.

Also I wouldn't bother looking into your education. Things were very different in the past. Live in the moment. Forget the past.

TheTorturedPoets · 25/05/2024 18:08

The school has to keep records for a number of years. I’m not sure how many sorry but you can definitely ask. I think it’s longer for SEN students.
