What natural products help you sleep?

I'm really struggling at the moment.

Can't fall asleep for hours then I wake up several times through the night. Yet another menopausal gift.

I keep reading about magnesium cream on the feet or melatonin patches but would really appreciate anyone's suggestions?

Melatonin an hour before bed
Shakti mat
Salt lamp
Lavender pillow spray
Sleep headphones with relaxing music or audiobook
Silk eye mask
Sleepy tea

This is my nightly routine, and I sleep like a baby (or a cat)

theyoungishman · 25/05/2024 17:05

Oh, and give up drinking alcohol if you haven't already

ChocAuVin · 25/05/2024 17:06

Magnesium before bed
Lavender pillow spray (This Works brand)
Box breathing (this is the golden ticket!)

Have you ever done a guided sleep audio book? You can find them on Spotify. I've done them a few times when I have bouts of insomnia and they work really well.

Numbbrain1 · 25/05/2024 17:35

@theyoungishman where do you get your melatonin from? I had some prescribed a while ago but also read it's not great for long term use...

No screens before or in bed.
I take magnesium but not sure it's making a huge difference.
Reading a book in bed.
A routine.

ASighMadeOfStone · 25/05/2024 17:46

Valerian and chamomile tea, plus lavender oil on my pillow.

I won't recommend because I shouldn't, but an Actifed pseudoephedrine pill knocks nd out as well so sometimes sinusitis has its positives.

I've tried melatonin but kept getting stomach ache. Possibly unrelated but I didn't want to keep going.

WmFnKdSg1234 · 25/05/2024 17:48

Get into bed before you want to sleep so that you can relax without worrying that you're not falling asleep as quickly as you think that you should be doing. I remind myself that rest can be nearly as good as sleep.

I use sleep headphones with an audio book (free from the library), the volume down low, so that I can hear it, but only just.

Magnesium glyincate (not sure of the spelling) I have found useful for me. Or Hemp tea.

Coastalcreeksider · 25/05/2024 17:50

I read and then when I feel sleepy ish, spray the pillow with lavender.

Last night, I don't even remember putting the light out.

Camomile tea
Yoga nidra on YouTube

gleefulstar · 25/05/2024 17:54

These are great thank you!

I wonder if there's any difference between magnesium cream and magnesium tablets?

I do take a piriton when I'm desperate but trying to go down a more natural route.

I have done trial & error to death and found these 2 that work. I use BOTH and I sleep 6-8 hours most nights (from 4-5 hours previously)

A hot shower before bed also helps a lot (and HRT)

Melatonin gummies changed my life. Fall asleep and stay asleep. Adm
Wake up fresh.

@SoftPillowAllNight

Thank you! I've actually been looking at that cream so will give it a go. Thanks for the tablet suggestion too. There are so many to choose from 🙄

SoftPillowAllNight · 25/05/2024 18:19

@gleefulstar - indeed and I tried so many that I almost gave up. But desperation kept me going!

Use the cream a bit lavishly and massage it deeply (5-7 mins) into the soles of your feet. I also rub some on my calves.

These def work as I missed the tablet one day and was up at 4am!

I don't have alcohol or caffeine regularly. Both are rare treats. But I'm happy to give these up for sleep,

You can tell I've tried everything! I was quite desperate! Grin

Good luck! Hope it works for you too..

dizzydizzydizzy · 25/05/2024 18:32

Hot bath in magnesium bath salts an hour or two before bed.

JenniferandJuniper · 25/05/2024 18:42

I use Dr Vogel Dormeasan sleep drops when I have bouts of not sleeping. Take in water half hour before bed. Takes a few nights. There is the sleep well granules as well now. These are herbal remedies so not sure if that is what you are after.

I have life long insomnia (30 plus years) and have tried everything. My new routine is:

Inositol
L theanine
Glycine
Magnesium

Someone on here mentioned unisom sleep tablets, I also add half of one of those plus progesterone:

I sleep...but not brilliantly:

Without this concoction I would be awake all night.

I've tried everything else you can think of.

BoundaryGirl3939 · 25/05/2024 19:26

Dormeasan in water. And castor oil on my eyelids and temples. A prayer to God to take away any subconscious obstacles to sleep helps me too.

MidLifeWoman · 25/05/2024 19:26

Sainsbury’s herbal sleep tablets (better than the nytol ones), plus magnesium spray on legs plus lavender pillow spray.

Livedandlearned · 25/05/2024 20:18

I listen to guided sleep stories on YouTube, I don't think I've ever managed to listen to more than ten minutes before I'm fast asleep.

Also cbd gummies if I'm stressed.

newname642 · 25/05/2024 20:23

Thanks, Minerva Smile
