Paula Vennells of the Post Office sobbing - gimme a break

Does anyone else find her constant tears such a cheap cop out?

She's crying because she's been caught out, not because she's sorry for what the Post Office put the subpostmasters and their families through. But she's not the only one at The Post Office, nor Fujitsu, who are responsible for providing incorrect evidence for the vindictive prosecutions.

Cosmosforbreakfast · 24/05/2024 15:11

Crocodile tears, sorry Paula, but Nicola Sturgeon did it first. No one's falling for it.

Standingchair1 · 24/05/2024 17:49

I don’t recall that.

DaffydownClock · 24/05/2024 18:02

Distraction tactics, false and completely unconvincing.
Horrible woman, I hope she goes to prison.

1dayatatime · 24/05/2024 18:10

I think the tears are genuine but not out of remorse for what she has done but more because of a realisation that she was woefully out of her depth and inadequate for the seniority of the role and that rather than admit this she tried to bully through (the postmasters and postmistresses) and bluff her way through.

That said if in the (near impossible) event that she was completely exonerated of all charges, came out with an unblemished reputation and somehow got appointed to another very senior role then she would again behave exactly the same way.

She should have just stuck to be a vicar and maybe a large part of the blame should rest with the people that decided to hire her for that role in the first place.

ssd · 24/05/2024 18:48

She is sickening

Wiglio · 24/05/2024 18:55

@ssd nailed it

LongSinceGotUpAndGone · 24/05/2024 18:56

Self pity.

AuntieMarys · 24/05/2024 19:15

And a Christian??
Utter vile woman

Blackcats7 · 24/05/2024 19:32

I loved hearing the sub post master and mistresses kc tell it to her straight. I wonder if anybody has ever called her out on anything ever before?
She clearly thought she could get away with her I’m too trusting, I didn’t know, I don’t recall bollocks but the kc was having none of it.

BasiliskStare · 24/05/2024 19:36

I do not know how that woman can sleep at night. ( maybe she doesn't ) But seems to me she is going down the incompetence / don't remember route as that will be less likely to get her into real trouble .

If any of them actually consist of liquid flowing from her eyes instead of being completely fake and hidden behind a performative handkerchief, they'll be out of pure rage, not distress.

I know people on here don't like the Mail but Jan Moir absolutely nailed Vennells with this

Vennells' memory is selective, to say the least. Perhaps it will win her another CBE, this time for devotion and services to obfuscation. 'I don't remember,' she would say.

More verbatim gems from my notebook: 'I wasn't consulted about that; I do not recall; I wasn't involved in that conversation; I personally did not know that; I'm not sure, it is not a term that I would use; I wasn't told about it; I didn't see it; I'm not entirely sure; I have no recall of this at all; I don't think so; that is not what I understood; I don't know that I can answer that question; I don't believe so; to be honest, I don't know; I wasn't involved; I can't help you; I don't know; I don't remember; I don't recall; I don't remember having any conversation about that; I'm not entirely clear; my recollection on that is that I don't recall it; that I cannot remember; I'm not entirely sure; if that conversation took place at all, I wasn't involved in it; I am not entirely sure; I don't recall making a conscious decision.'
^^
It is amazing how someone with such a powerful lack of recall rose so high up the corporate ladder. Or perhaps she really is, in the mocking words of Jason Beer, 'the unluckiest CEO in Britain'.

What the hell WAS she being paid for? and does she really think that this is going to get her out of the shit? as for the tears - spare me. Everyone can see right through that little act

TemuSpecialBuy · 24/05/2024 21:01

I imagine she is feeling sorry for herself. And while I don’t recall the specifics she I believe spent a lot of time (and money?) getting coaching for the inquiry. Again, I imagine the tears are all part of the spiel as she is able to go from sobbing to composed and level in 0.2 seconds.

Her behaviour then and now is absolutely egregious.

She was being patted on the back for increased profitability and paying out 6 figure bonuses to herself that were knowingly acquired by blackmailing staff into paying the business “back”money that was never stolen and driving others to the brink of suicide….

utterly shameful and disgusting.

what’s worse is she is so deluded she SOMEHOW thinks she can filibuster and fudge her way out of it by pretending to be the thickest CEO to ever exist.

edit: and the fact to top it all off she is a FUCKINg vicar. Lord give me strength…

Anchorast · 24/05/2024 21:31

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain those weasel words as reported by Jan Moir, as much a cop out as the self pity tears. Jan Moir knows how to go for the jugular. Vennells of course has been coached by legal advisors to be as vague as possible, as a previous poster said.

Others were responsible of course. But to see her denials and use the whole female crying schtick especially manipulative and cowardly.

OP posts:
Blahdymcblahdyface · 24/05/2024 21:35

She had no tears for the victims including those who took their own lives

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 24/05/2024 21:35

What enrages me about her act is that she and whoever advised her clearly thinks we're all too thick to see through it.

Blahdymcblahdyface · 24/05/2024 21:47

I should mention that I am a post office kid, my dad was caught up in this but was lucky

HRTQueen · 24/05/2024 22:21

self pitying tears and the arrogance to think the public will fall for more untruths

rwalker · 24/05/2024 22:32

Crying because she’s shitting herself looks like her life is going to implode
she could quite easy end up with the title of most hated woman in Britain

I think the tears are genuine but they are not because she’s sorry

ginandbearit · 24/05/2024 22:42

She's the epitome of the arrogance and conniving of the top managerial class in this country.

Cover up , denial , obfuscation and dismissal of the little people and a ruthless determination to avoid reputational damage to the organisation and themselves , we've seen it in so many industries from the NHS to financial services, and then retire or resign and get into consulting within the same industry if forced to move on . There's something very rotten in the values and systems of the c suites.

LongSinceGotUpAndGone · 24/05/2024 23:22

Ian Hislop told it like it was on HIGNIFY.

LightSpeeds · 24/05/2024 23:25

Yep, prison for the lot of them!

NannyWanny1 · 24/05/2024 23:30

Paula Vennells and the others need now to be prosecuted when this enquiry is over.
See how they like it behind bars .. unlike the others who were not guilty of anything -this self serving lot are. It’s beyond disgusting!
Also get their compensation paid they’ve suffered enough

SabreIsMyFave · 24/05/2024 23:35

LightSpeeds · 24/05/2024 23:25

Yep, prison for the lot of them!

YES!
