Help with long haul flight! iPad games and apps that don't need internet

Chickatease · 23/05/2024 20:38

5 year old DD and I have a long haul flight next week. I have downloaded the max allowed on iPlayer of cbeebies shows, we have a hairdressing game and a vets game already. Any good recommendations for apps we'll be able to use on the flight?

I think you can download things on Netflix

Harrysmummy246 · 23/05/2024 20:49

Depending on airline, often the little screen has loads of games and programmes- DS barely stopped to eat on long haul last month, not quite 7yo

MaryFuckingFerguson · 23/05/2024 20:51

They will have masses of stuff on the inflight entertainment to keep a 5 yr old happy.

cbeebies have different apps, a creative one, one for games and a story time one. They can all have parts downloaded to be used offline. I like the CBeebies apps as they have no adverts.

ChanWork · 23/05/2024 20:53

You know she'll have her own TV screen with a children's section.
IME kids love this

Chickatease · 23/05/2024 21:16

Thanks I know there is a screen on the plane but our last long haul flight didn't really have enough on there in terms.of games that were appropriate for her age. A few levels of angry birds and that's it. I didn't realise you can download bits on the cbeebies app so I'll have a look at that

Who are you flying with? Many have in flight Wi-Fi now anyway. Otherwise just downloads to your iPad and mix of normal in flight options.

Chickatease · 23/05/2024 21:56

Norse Atlantic. Not sure about the WiFi. I didn't think recommendations for games that don't need WiFi was such a big ask though, so I'll go and Google instead 😂

How about a few books or toys?

Because that will last all of 5 minutes and I have 9 hours to fill. She's 5 not a baby.

sorry, I don't understand your response at all. Why is a 5 year old less likely to play with toys and read books compared to a baby? I would certainly be using books and toys first, sticker books in particular are fun on long flights. Books you can read to her, or read together. audio books. These things would be my go to before planning 9 hours of screens!

Come on !!!

Flights with young kids can be hellish

Have a lovely trip OP xxx

The BabyBus Panda games are great for that age, and can mostly be played with WiFi off. Sometimes you have to download extra levels but you can do that before you go.

There's loads of different ones, some more aimed at younger kids than others. My 10yo played most of them from age 1 to about 8, so they're still age appropriate for your DC. And my 5yo likes them now!

Because 1. I have activity books, colouring books, pencil case and a reading book packed already but it is literally nothing to do with my question. We will also probably buy a magazine at the airport. But nowhere have I said please help me fill 9 hours with screen time 2. While a baby may be entertained on a flight by waving a toy around or playing cars my DD is not. 3. Who is carrying a fucking toy box on to the plane? Cos it won't be DD I tell you that. How many toys do you think can be packed on a child's carry on luggage. So thanks for you condensending replies but they are literally no help whatsoever

Do you have the Disney channel? You can download that onto an iPad and then download content to be viewed offline, like Bluey and loads of Disney films.
Even if you don't have it, I'm sure you can sign up for just a month. It would be worth it. So much good stuff on there.

Great thanks, I've also seen a recommendation of toca hospital so I'll test that out tomorrow

Khan academy kids. Free app. Loads of games and stories. Also educational but doesn't make it obvious.

bleurghhh4 · 23/05/2024 22:32

The bluey app is fab, just update when you have wifi before you go. Also peppa pig. We flew to Australia and back for Xmas with our then 4 year old and all she needed was a tablet and inflight films

mitogoshi · 23/05/2024 22:32

@Chickatease

Travel games are your best bet, cards, uno, reading books, colouring, puzzles. My dc travelled long haul before the invention of iPads! The map on the in flight entertainment system was also popular with one of mine, she particularly liked the names of the towns of Greenland Confused

mitogoshi · 23/05/2024 22:33

No need to be rude to people suggesting non screen based solutions.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 23/05/2024 22:34

Toca Boca iPad games are good. Lots to choose from. There's a hairdressing, doctor and a butterfly one off the top of my head. The latter is oddly addictive

We used to have interactive fairy tales. The app would read a bit of the story and you had to tap the right part of the screen to choose an answer and move it along.

Kids books on your kindle, most tablets have a book app.

Hit the button - basic maths.

Duolingo - where are you going?

Procreate. Design painting app. Lots of free stuff available too . This is a bit next level but if a keen artist it might be worth it.

eurochick · 23/05/2024 22:35

The Toca apps are not free but keep my daughter amused for a while. I don't think they need internet.

We always loaded a few things on her tablet at that age, but honestly she mostly used the inflight entertainment. Handing a five year old some headphones and a screen and saying "have at it" when they don't usually get unlimited screen time should do the trick.

Chickatease · 23/05/2024 22:35

mitogoshi · 23/05/2024 22:33

Of course there is. It is absolutely nothing to do with my thread. If people want to travel long haul with young children and not use screens then crack on but that's nothing to do with what I asked. I have travel activities, I have Uno, I have two books and a where's wally, I'll have snacks and the screen on the plane. But that's nothing to do with my question

@Chickatease I hope you're nicer to people IRL than you are on here. People are trying to make suggestions, and even tho they are away from your question, there's really no need for the snark IMO.
