Does anyone regret having their kitchen cabinets painted?

Just as the title really! I moved into a house with a solid wood kitchen last year but it's an orange/honey colour that I really don't like. I'm tempted to have it painted but am a bit wary as I've never had one done before, and there's actually nothing cosmetically wrong with it now other than it's just not my taste.

Has anyone that has had it done got any words of wisdom, either way please? The lady I am looking at getting it done with has been a "professional" furniture upcycler for years and has a great reputation so I have no worries that way.

Why would you 'regret' it, though? If you don't like the colour, repaint it? As it is, you don't like the colour.

I'm interested in the answers to this. My main concern is wear and tear. Do painted cabinets look as good after a year or two?

FortunataTagnips · 23/05/2024 13:27

We got our orangey wood kitchen cabinets repainted and it made a massive difference to the feel of the kitchen, and how I felt about cooking in it. It’s now a lovely, calming pale blue-green.
Ultimately, we’re going to redo the kitchen at some point, as the layout’s annoying, but at least the cupboards aren’t pissing me off now!

We had ours painted, made a huge difference. Over time, around the handles the paint became worn, and chipped due to fingernails.

@UntiltheGirl because maybe it doesn't look like you hoped, or you've had to do it again a couple of years down the line, or it chips easily, or it's hard to keep clean, or a multitude of other reasons that maybe I wouldn't think of because it's not something I've had done before so I'm asking people with the experience? That's the whole point of the post.

@FortunataTagnips oh that's fab, thanks for the pics! How has the tile paint held up around the cooker? I assumed I wouldn't be able to do that!!

I had mine redone in farrow and ball and really love the colour. It has chipped a little where I bashed it with the hoover or the kids have dropped things into it. I just bought a tin of the same colour paint and touched it up which has worked perfectly so far

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 23/05/2024 13:34

No young kids it's great, we had ours done in our old house and it looked amazing, had the tiles and workstop sprayed as well.
Once our daughter was a toddler chips did appear from where she'd drop or throw something.
You do need to be careful with cleaning products as some can damage the paint

FortunataTagnips · 23/05/2024 13:34

@flummingbird It’s been great! The pic only shows the undercoat - the final product is also pale green, and it’s lasted really well. Of course, when you look properly at the tiles, it’s obvious they’ve been painted, but the overall impression is so much better.

flummingbird · 23/05/2024 13:35

Brilliant thanks. This is it now and I think a light sage green would make all of the difference in the world to the room, and might even tie in with the tiles...

I’d definitely do it - it’ll make that end of the room feel so much lighter.

Our is already a painted kitchen which we had installed 15 years ago. Top tip is to have it painted by hand not sprayed. Therefore we can touch up yearly ( minimal but the cupboards that get used the most) and the small areas of wear, if it was sprayed it would have a different texture when touched up.
We are now speaking with our kitchen fitter to have a refresh, small refurb in a totally new colour.

Nchanged89 · 23/05/2024 13:39

Have a look at frenchic paint, there is a number of Facebook groups with advice and tips or consider wrapping them with fablon, it can just be peeled off. I did my kitchen cabinets with fablon and they look brilliant. I frenchiced some horrible fitted wardrobes and they look good too. The fablon is more durable for the kitchen in my opinion.

Tittyfilarious · 23/05/2024 13:40

I had the same color kitchen as yours and we painted it white , I absolutely love it and we just touch up any tiny chips . My dh did ours by hand and it took a while and a few coats but I absolutely love it .

TheMellowHam · 23/05/2024 13:41

I had mine done with a printer and a top coat. The paint has scratched quite in places.

Mind you - I live in a cursed shit hole, I mean house. Looks nice though! Even with the paint flaking off

TheMellowHam · 23/05/2024 13:41

Not printer! I meant primer

Ooh you've all got me convinced! Well, except for @TheMellowHam , solidarity for the cursed hole - I feel your pain...

Lovely transformations!!

I'm going to book her 😁

Yep, and no regrets. It’s been 18 months now and I haven’t noticed any issues with chipping or flaking. The only thing I have noticed is that the corner of the cabinet door closest to the dishwasher has swollen and cracked. I think this is from steam coming out of the dishwasher damaging thr door as the paint is less protective than thr heavily varnishing coating it used to have. (This would have been prevented by us opening the dishwasher fully rather than just cracking it to stop the “I’ve finished” incessant beeping).

I also wipe up some spills on the doors more quickly than I used to - I don’t know if they would stain the paint but I’m trying not to risk it.

ours were hand painted by a professional using whichever type of F&B finish they recommend for cabinets.

I feel I would be able to touch up any damage by hand if it occurs.

ClonedSquare · 23/05/2024 13:52

I regret painting ours myself as I did a crap job. But I've never regretted having the colour itself, I love it.

TheMellowHam · 23/05/2024 13:57

Do it OP! I bet it’ll look great!

I'm just back to mention I painted over my bathroom tiles around the shower and bath and 3 years later they still look amazing. The previous owner had medium biscuit beige and white checkerboard tiles (!!) but they were new and in great condition but I hated the colour. So I painted all the beige tiles white and you wouldn’t tell which tiles were originally white and which were painted!

So that’s my success story I wanted to add in case anyone wanted to paint their own kitchen or bathroom tiles… It was Dulux tile paint - looks amazing 3 years later despite steam, water, cleaning etc
