Does anyone regret having their kitchen cabinets painted?

Just as the title really! I moved into a house with a solid wood kitchen last year but it's an orange/honey colour that I really don't like. I'm tempted to have it painted but am a bit wary as I've never had one done before, and there's actually nothing cosmetically wrong with it now other than it's just not my taste.

Has anyone that has had it done got any words of wisdom, either way please? The lady I am looking at getting it done with has been a "professional" furniture upcycler for years and has a great reputation so I have no worries that way.

Mine have been painted for 2 years now - I still love them.

itsgoingtobeabumpyride · 23/05/2024 14:26

I've just had mine painted by a professional company.
They took them off, primed them, undercoat then spray qpainted them but they added a hardener to the paint.
I had Farrow and Ball Vert de terre (sage green ) they look fabulous and it cost less than £600

We didn't. We have pine units and just changed the floor tiles tiles and worktop. Also now have some colourful Roman blinds..I love it, and no chance of any paintwork getting chipped.

@Nchanged89, did you do that yourselves? Where did you get fablon from? The vinyl is peeling off our cabinets and DH is summoning the will to address the issue... 🤣

Yes I did it myself, it was easy after watching YouTube videos. I got the fablon from amazon. It comes in loads of different colours.
The hardest part was the long narrow door on the left it was tricky to do. It's really easier than you think it is. Buy the fablon and a knife kit, watch YouTube videos and have a go!
If it all goes wrong it just peels straight off. You will need to get all the old vinyl off your cupboards for a good finish but if it's old it will come off easily a hairdryer will help.

Had ours done and worktop replaced. Much cheaper than having a new kitchen and it seems to do basic wiping off marks ok. I repainted our dresser in the dining area - really easy to do.

We had it done in our old house and it was gorgeous but over time it did chip quite a lot and looked awful frankly.

RunnyPaint · 23/05/2024 16:16

Thank you @Nchanged89! 😊 Will let DH know (he "enjoys" having jobs to do) 🤣

No regrets, wish I had done it sooner. Doors were really boring, oatmeal colour, not even solid wood, but fairly good condition, considering the kitchen was installed in 1999. I had a really good decorator sand and paint them in a Farrow and ball type green colour. New gold handles, amazing wallpaper... people think it's a brand new kitchen and I couldn't be happier. I couldn't have afforded a new kitchen

Chocaholicnightmare · 23/05/2024 16:21

There have been no chips in it and I've had it for over a year. Paint was B and Q own brand, special cupboard paint.

Have a look at diy on a budget official facebook page.
Loads of recommendations and photos.

When we bought our house it had had its wooden kitchen painted duck egg blue. It was pretty durable. After a few years we ripped it all out and replaced with natural wood, because we prefer it. But we had no quibble with the quality of the paint job that had been done; there were a few chips here and there but they weren’t noticeable unless you went looking for them. We just didn’t want a painted kitchen.

WildCherryBlossom · 23/05/2024 17:51

We had ours painted in a farrow & ball paint. Lasted over 10'years before it started to look a bit scuffed in places. The guy who first did it used a small roller designed for behind radiators which gave a lovely finish. We touched it up ourselves when we felt it needed a refresh.

Can I ask what paint you used and what colour?

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 23/05/2024 18:00

I did ours with Little Greene Intelligent Eggshell and it's wearing well.

I'm doing my kitchen at the moment. I'd recommend diy because I can't imagine a world where chips don't happen I'm a kitchen - with diy you can fix yourself.

You can't vinyl wrap those cupboards well because of the shape. Rustoleum kitchen cupboard paint peeled off for me. I really rate 'the one' paint - expensive, but rock solid and no prep or top coat needed. I've used it on an old built in pine dresser thing.

KathieFerrars · 23/05/2024 18:29

@TisUnbelievable I didn't paint the kitchen cupboards but got a decorator to do it who specialises in this and he strips off what is on there, then applies a special base and then specialised paint made up to be a f&B colour. He has a workshop that he takes the doors to. I didn't bother to have the insides done. The dresser I just did with the left over top coat stuff but it doesn't get anything like the same wear and tear.

Really happy with ours done about 6 months ago now. Still looks great.

Have you watched videos of using a hairdryer to wrap cupboards that aren't nice and flat. It is possible to do it.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 23/05/2024 20:03

@flummingbird completely off topic, but I think we may have the same kitchen table and chairs! Homebase, by any chance?

Before and after:

Wow, can't believe that's just paint. It looks amazing

flummingbird · 23/05/2024 20:11

@ThinkingAgainAndAgain yes! About 15 years old and the chairs have been re-covered loads of times but it’s sturdy as anything!!

Thanks everyone. She’s booked, I can’t wait!!

Mine too! We bought it as a stopgap nearly 17 years ago it’s still going strong, we use it everyday. I am amazed. Covering the chair cushions is a good idea. We still have the original ones and I scrub them with fairy liquid regularly, and leave them to dry outside. They come up brilliantly.

flummingbird · 23/05/2024 20:19

@ThinkingAgainAndAgain I've done them in both wipeable plastic material when the kids were little, and nicer fabrics again now. For £20 or so and an hour of time, it gives it a whole new look 😁
