Voting question regarding poorer people

Dogeatsdog24 · 22/05/2024 17:23

So my understanding is the gap between rich and poor is getting bigger it seems to me rishi has picked on the most vulnerable people ie poor/low income /disabled/ill /elderly etc .

So my question is now you have to have photo ID to vote . Is this a stunt to stop people voting. Which are more likely to be the vulnerable people I mentioned above? As they may be less likely to have a passport /driving licence.

I understand you can apply for photo ID on the government site. But the only reason I know this is because mumsnet told me otherwise I would have had no idea. There will be millions of others that do not know as well. And all non votes automatically go to him.

So is it a ploy to get more votes/stop people voting ... am I talking shit?

I think it's pretty obvious that this was the intention behind the change, but to be fair, it was Boris that introduced this and not Rishi.

Kangarude · 22/05/2024 17:26

There has been a big push in the media/press advising about the photo ID
Non votes do not go to him. They only count actual votes

Lovemusic82 · 22/05/2024 17:28

Yea, I have always said that. A lot of elderly, disabled and poor people won’t have photo ID, I think it was always their intention to try and stop the poor voting. Voting in my area for the local elections was shockingly low, I really hope more people vote for the general and I hope communities do all they can to make sure vulnerable people can vote by helping them sort ID, registering them to vote online or by taking them to the polling stations.

It’s been all over the news for quite some time. I think local grassroots groups will have to help the elderly and disabled but just because you’re poor is not really an excuse to not know about this and then get your photo id from the government website.

YouJustDoYou · 22/05/2024 17:34

Well, there is the Voter Authority Certificate they can apply for if they don't have a relevant photo ID....it's just knowing/being able to do that of course that's the issue...

Needmorelego · 22/05/2024 17:34

They tell you about the need for photo ID and how to get one on the polling card.
If you are registered to vote and receive your polling card you can't say you "didn't know".

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 22/05/2024 17:43

Older and disabled people are quite likely to have bus passes or Blue Badges, both of which are acceptable forms of ID, so it's not quite as bad as you might think. Also, expired ID can still be used provided it still looks like you.

Kangarude · 22/05/2024 17:43

And of course you don’t need ID for postal voting

MrsPinkSky · 22/05/2024 17:46
  1. Even poor people can use the internet to find out how to apply for photo ID.
  2. They can apply for a postal vote instead if they don't want to get photo ID.
HoHoHoliday · 22/05/2024 17:47

It's been very well publicised that you can apply for voter ID for free. It's not a hindrance to poorer people, it's to support everyone getting by a vote. It's a scheme supported cross-parties. I'm in favour of it as I once went to vote and someone had "stolen" my vote.
And it's not the case that non-votes (whatever they are?!) go to anyone. A vote goes to the person voted for, nothing else.

Redglitter · 22/05/2024 17:49

And all non votes automatically go to him

Absolutely not true

TakeOnFlea · 22/05/2024 17:51

"And all non votes automatically go to him. "

What? 🤣🤣

And you really think older poorer people aren't in possession of their free bus pass?

BringItOnTooRight · 22/05/2024 17:52

Also the timing in July is designed to make it harder for students to vote. They will have registered in their university town in order to vote in the May elections, now they will have to hurry to change where they are registered to vote in time for July, at a time when they have exams, have to move out of accommodation and get summer jobs or maybe go travelling.
Big anti-democratic cynical move by the Tories here.

Itsonlymashadow · 22/05/2024 17:52

I have seen voter ID talked about quite a lot recently in media. And talking about how you can apply for the government one. which is what needs to be done.

i live in a quite deprived area, i think the whole idea of poor people or disabled people simply not understanding is quite condescending.

Besides which, in the next few weeks something will arrive in the post regarding postal voting and will (more than likely) include information on ID and alternatives.

size4feet · 22/05/2024 17:56

@Dogeatsdog24

And all non votes automatically go to him

Of course they don't. What nonsense are you spouting

Personally I think to avoid voter fraud, photo IDs should have been required for years. .

blacksax · 22/05/2024 17:57

"... am I talking shit?"

In short - yes.

(well you did ask)

They can register to vote by post and have it sent to a different address.

This! And if anyone is worried about people in their family or friend group or neighbourhood they can mention this to them personally. We shouldn’t expect “Them” to do everything for us!

MrsBobtonTrent · 22/05/2024 17:59

Postal vote. Job done.

There have been TV ads and print ads for this to be fair.

Itsonlymashadow · 22/05/2024 18:01

@Dogeatsdog24 where did you get the idea that non votes go to RS?

July4th · 22/05/2024 18:03

Did you not have recent council/PCC elections? You would have needed ID then.

It's been all over the news and internet. I do agree that it disproportionally effects poorer people though who are less likely to have a passport or driving licence. Older may have a bus pass or blue badge though

July4th · 22/05/2024 18:04

Non votes (what ever they are) don't go to the Conservative and Unionist party though 😂

There is virtually no voter fraud.

QueenOfTheEntireFuckingUniverse · 22/05/2024 18:05

I applied for my free voter ID for the last local election. They let me know after the deadline to apply that the photo wasn't right. It was too late to do anything about it.

So the free ID exists. But the system to get it doesn't work.
