URGENT - DOG ATTACKED PARTNER **Please read OP's latest updates** [edited by MNHQ]

Hi all, my 6yo JRT has attacked my partner twice this morning. He has recently developed some territorial aggression, and we have to 'coax' him away from his bed each morning. This morning was as normal, but he wouldn't come so we just left him. My partner went to get milk, about 2m away from him, and the dog lunged and has bitten his hand fairly badly. We managed to lock him away whilst we sorted things, and have since boarded a section of the kitchen away so he can get outside but also can't get to us.
Anytime we enter the kitchen he viciously barks. I have a 4yo at home, so this isn't something I can risk.
He has since bitten my partner again when we went to open the back door for him (by leaning over the barrier we've created) and it's really bad - blood everywhere and he is now in a&e.
I cannnot get near the dog. How do I get him to a point where I can get him checked out - or as I'm probably denying to myself, put to sleep..?
I'm in absolute bits - I just need advice please urgently.

To note - I can't get a vet to come to him, I have already called around

  • [Note from MNHQ: We've already edited the title to ask people to read the OP's updates before responding (just click on the See All tab). As that doesn't seem to have worked, we feel the need to explain here in the opening post that the OP's dog has been put to sleep by now as he was found to be suffering from a brain tumour. The OP is obviously in pieces about this so please be sensitive when responding.]

I am so sorry for your loss. Look after yourselves.

If the police ever takes a dog, they will just get it put to sleep. They won't get the vet to carry out tests to see if they're are any underlying illnesses. They won't care. Especially as your partner has been to a&e with a bite, they'll just put him down without a question.

@FlangeBoil , I am so sorry you had to go through this , it must of been heart breaking. It's good to know that the police were kind and got him crated without and fuss.
You did the very best thing for your dog and your family .

I am also very glad that @Chewinggumwall was not right.

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 23/05/2024 12:45

It was clear from the start how much you loved your dog and I am so sorry it ended this way for you. Such an emotional issue but you still managed to do the right thing. You may need to remember that in the coming hard days. Look after yourself.

dawngreen · 23/05/2024 12:46

Sorry for your loss.

Ginkypig · 23/05/2024 12:47

I really sorry @FlangeBoil

im so glad you managed to find a way to make it as easy as possible him.
I know you were worried about having to use force.

you got him there and gave him an ending with love. With the update of the brain tumour there wasn’t going to be a happy ending for you but you can know you did your very best by him as fast as you possibly could when he needed you the most.

I hope that’s what you hold on to and not the horrible bit before because that wasn’t him that was the illness.

spiderlight · 23/05/2024 12:47

I am so very sorry. At least you have an answer now as to why it happened, but the outcome must be heartbreaking for you. Thinking of you.

Monsterjam · 23/05/2024 12:57

Oh darling. I’m so sorry for you. What a lucky dog to have had to there for them.look after yourselves x

Babyboomtastic · 23/05/2024 13:07

I'm so very sorry 😞

I hope in time it's a comfort that he wasn't a bad dog - he was a very good dog who was very poorly.

It also meant you didn't have to make any hard decisions about whether to euthanise for behavioural reasons which would have been agonizing for you, and you know that there's nothing you could have done to save him.

Nouvellenovel · 23/05/2024 13:08

So sorry op. At least you know your ddog’s behaviour was due to a condition that you couldn’t have done anything to help.
He had a good life with you.

ellebelli · 23/05/2024 13:11

Two years ago we had to PTS our 9yr old border terrier.
He had a brain tumor and was fitting constantly.
He wasn't aggressive but he did growl when we went moved him(was in pain)he was a shell of himself.
So sad for you and your pet 😢

kittensinthekitchen · 23/05/2024 13:11

Soubriquet · 23/05/2024 13:15

Hi all - an update - though I haven't read any replies or private messages since yesterday.

The police dog handlers arrived and were amazing. Got him in a crate without the use of any tools, just a confident officer, some ham and a nudge.

Sadly, after getting him to the vets and sedated, tested - he had a brain tumour.

We've just said our goodbyes. He went so peacefully and we spoke to him throughout. Even managed a cuddle before the euthanasia whilst he was sedated.

We are in bits, but he's in a far better place now.

Thank you for the support.

I thought it was something brain related- {as per earlier post} simply because his aggression was so out of character, towards people he knew and trusted.

Poor little man. {We had a Siamese cat who had a brain issue who suddenly attacked ''things that weren't there'' as a child...and he too had to be PTS and Mum {and I} can still cry over Sammy over 40 years later.

He's in the best place, pain free now.
