URGENT - DOG ATTACKED PARTNER **Please read OP's latest updates** [edited by MNHQ]

Hi all, my 6yo JRT has attacked my partner twice this morning. He has recently developed some territorial aggression, and we have to 'coax' him away from his bed each morning. This morning was as normal, but he wouldn't come so we just left him. My partner went to get milk, about 2m away from him, and the dog lunged and has bitten his hand fairly badly. We managed to lock him away whilst we sorted things, and have since boarded a section of the kitchen away so he can get outside but also can't get to us.
Anytime we enter the kitchen he viciously barks. I have a 4yo at home, so this isn't something I can risk.
He has since bitten my partner again when we went to open the back door for him (by leaning over the barrier we've created) and it's really bad - blood everywhere and he is now in a&e.
I cannnot get near the dog. How do I get him to a point where I can get him checked out - or as I'm probably denying to myself, put to sleep..?
I'm in absolute bits - I just need advice please urgently.

To note - I can't get a vet to come to him, I have already called around

  • [Note from MNHQ: We've already edited the title to ask people to read the OP's updates before responding (just click on the See All tab). As that doesn't seem to have worked, we feel the need to explain here in the opening post that the OP's dog has been put to sleep by now as he was found to be suffering from a brain tumour. The OP is obviously in pieces about this so please be sensitive when responding.]

A friend had this with a dog and it turned out to have a brain tumour. There could be many reasons behind why he's suddenly turned like this but you can't have an unpredictable dog with a child in the house.

It would break my heart, though, OP, and I'm so very sorry you're in this awful position. I hope your DP is OK.

My JRT had a brain tumour, which we weren’t aware of until she started launching sudden vicious attacks on our elderly dog. The only hint we had prior was a look in her eye when she woke up that meant we’d put her in an upstairs room when children visited - no previous attacks, just our awareness of dog body language told us not to risk it.
The diagnosis was a few days after she started her attacks, it was untreatable, and she was in unbearable pain. Broke my heart, I’m crying now, because when she wasn’t fitting and attacking, she was funny and loving, and it was so sudden.

I’m so sorry this is happening @FlangeBoil , you’re not a terrible person, and I hope one day you can see that you’re doing the best in protecting your child, but also for a dog who you’ve given a good life despite the difficulties. I would have thought the police would be glad that you’ve called before they have to deal with a serious incident. Please be kind to yourself xx

AstonScrapingsNameChange · 23/05/2024 12:15

Sorry you've had to go through this.

Glad the police were nice and the horrible situation went as well as it could.

FangsForTheMemory · 23/05/2024 12:16

Hugs, OP. How very sad. But it’s good that you know why his behaviour changed and you’ll be able to remember him as he was when he was well.

justasking111 · 23/05/2024 12:16

My friend had a gorgeous jack Russell for many years. He was such a character. He'd go off on jaunts visiting neighbours. When he died they bought another one. He was PTS when he was two for similar behaviour. Vet suspected a brain tumour. They now have another dog which is a friendly rascal.

My mother liked llahso apso dogs, one had to be PTS around two years of age, again probably a tumour. It's very sad when this happens.

Gilead · 23/05/2024 12:17

I didn’t want to say anything yesterday, but our eight year old Cavalier had similar behaviour and it was due to a brain tumour. I’m so sorry, it’s heartbreaking. 💐

MonsteraMama · 23/05/2024 12:18

Oh I'm so sorry, how sad. But you've done so well by him and I'm sure he went knowing he was loved by you all.

Wishing you and your family peace and healing Flowers

Roselilly36 · 23/05/2024 12:18

So sorry OP, very upsetting, but the right thing to do Flowers

LaLoba · 23/05/2024 12:18

Just cross posted, I’m so sorry to see your update. You did right by him, in heartbreaking circumstances.

Silvers11 · 23/05/2024 12:18

Aw! @FlangeBoil So sorry to read this. Not surprised you are in bits

I'm glad the dog handlers were able to get him into the crate and you got him to the vet. I hope it is some consolation to you to know that he had a brain tumour causing the aggression and that there wasn't anything else you could have done

Sending kind thoughts to you all🌹💐🌹

WhatWouldHopperDo · 23/05/2024 12:19

So sorry to hear the outcome. Sending hugs x

flyingwingsabove · 23/05/2024 12:21

Very sorry to hear the outcome OP. You did everything you could.

murasaki · 23/05/2024 12:22

Sorry to hear this. He was still your lovely boy, he just wasn't well. I hope you can remember him as he was, a loved member of your family.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 23/05/2024 12:25

Ahh op sorry to hear your update but at least you have a reason. 💐💐

Gymnopedie · 23/05/2024 12:27

I'm so sorry OP. I hope it's a comfort that there was a serious problem to explain the aggression and that you weren't having an otherwise healthy dog pts.

Hi all - an update - though I haven't read any replies or private messages since yesterday.

The police dog handlers arrived and were amazing. Got him in a crate without the use of any tools, just a confident officer, some ham and a nudge.

Sadly, after getting him to the vets and sedated, tested - he had a brain tumour.

We've just said our goodbyes. He went so peacefully and we spoke to him throughout. Even managed a cuddle before the euthanasia whilst he was sedated.

We are in bits, but he's in a far better place now.

Thank you for the support.

So very sorry to read this. The kindest thing you could have done. Poor chap. I hope you're ok Flowers

TheShellBeach · 23/05/2024 12:29

How awful for you all, OP.
You made the right decision for your lovely dog.

brightyellowflower · 23/05/2024 12:37

I don't currently have a dog, but anytime one of my cats is vicious, they're in pain/poorly. You need to get the dog checked out. Was this not your first thought when he started getting off with you all? Clearly in pain.

FlangeBoil · 23/05/2024 12:37

@brightyellowflower he's dead now, but thank you.

So sorry cross posted and didn't see your update. I'm pleased he's at peace now, poor doggie. Hope your husband gets better soon too. Take care of yourselves.

Maybe read the OP's updates? She's in bits so this is hardly helpful. The dog had a brain tumour

Poppyseed14 · 23/05/2024 12:38

So sorry OP, my heart is breaking looking at his little furry mitt xx

TorturedPoetsDepartmentAnthology · 23/05/2024 12:40

You’re a good dog owner and he knew he was loved. He’s at peace now. I’m so sorry for the traumatic day for him but glad he was able to be put to sleep gently. He won’t have known and you did what was right by him.
Take care.
