Bloody Dyson

Fed up of bits going wrong and having to spend a fortune to replace them. I'm never spending £300 on a Dyson vacuum again.

Please recommend a good one (pet hair) for less than £200.

Unless Mr Dyson would like to give me a free one🙄

Watching with interest. When this Dyson gives up the ghost, I'm moving brands. It's never been that great, considering the cost. It was £450 new.

Plus, I can never unsee how many dyson appliances are piled up at our local skip. Grin

JollyJunee · 20/05/2024 16:49

My cleaner always said she hated Dyson. The attachments were always missing or broken and they were rubbish!
I’ve been using Shark for a few years now and really like it.

Happyinarcon · 20/05/2024 17:10

Weird my Dyson is doing fine, I had a smaller model in the past that was also good although I did have to get a new battery at one point

Don't Dyson offer 5 year guarantees any more?

Mine is 13 years old. The brush head (£60 to replace) stopped working at one point and I phoned them the day before the guarantee ran out and they sent a new one without quibbling.

Perhaps they're more shoddily made these days.

Devilsmommy · 20/05/2024 17:18

Miele are way better than Dyson IMO

Fixesplease · 20/05/2024 17:18

Shark! I've had one for the last 7 years. Managed to bring my carpets up like brand new and has quite happily survived 5 hairy dogs and I small child.
Dyson was crap compared to this. Get the pet hair one.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 20/05/2024 17:18

After fixing my Dyson twice (at a fair cost) I chucked it and got a Shark. No problems for the 3.5 years I've had it.

Lilibut · 20/05/2024 17:25

Oh gosh I hate my cordless Dyson so much. I really regret making a whole case for DH that it would be a worthwhile buy too 😭
Piece of useless plastic. Urgh.

Favouritefruits · 20/05/2024 17:27

you Can’t beat a Henry, I bought one after I noticed most shops and hotels use them, they really do pick up everything and can get in all the little areas with the tools.

SharpWriter · 20/05/2024 17:42

I've had a couple of Dysons in my time and always end up throwing them in a skip as they're crap. I now use Meile and my partner has a Shark- both really good and we have cats and a dog.

Ilikewinter · 20/05/2024 17:46

Shark, it will bĺow your mind 😂

Fatnold · 20/05/2024 20:09

Ha. I thought it was maybe just my bad luck.

Vax Air Stretch Max Pet, knocked spots of my Dyson rollerball pet hoover. And about a 1/4 of the price.

TizerorFizz · 21/05/2024 14:12

We always have a Miele. People fall for the Dyson name and make him £billions! He moved vacuum cleaner production to Malaysia 20 years ago but people keep paying ludicrous prices for average heavy cleaners. What happened to their ugly washing machines? Do you all buy the overpriced fans and hair straighteners? It's marketing hogwash.

PeterGabrielsunderpants · 21/05/2024 14:16

Dysons are famed for being crap - every recycling centre/rubbish tip has a Dyson graveyard.

Dysonworker · 21/05/2024 14:25

As my name change suggests, I used to work for Dyson. Part of my remit was checking the vacuums' performance (suction, durability, ease of use etc etc) against their main competitors.

Honestly, Dyson ain't all that. Shark outperformed them on pretty much every test we ran. Vax and Miele are decent too, but in your place I'd go for a Shark.

Also James Dyson is an awful human being and boss and I would strongly recommend that you do NOT give him your hard earned cash! I still don't understand why they're so respected as a brand 😕

Blondeissimo · 21/05/2024 14:42

I've had Dyson but none of them came close to my upright Sebo. It's a workhorse and deals with pet hair like a champ. Would by a Sebo again in a heartbeat.

TizerorFizz · 21/05/2024 15:07

@Dysonworker

They rose to prominence because he marketed a "new" vacuum bagless cleaner. The first ones weighed a ton. Cumbersome too. However being British, full of engineering knowhow (?) that appeared new, and good sales technique, they had vast sales. Of course they were not superior. Just different and more money. I'm afraid people are gullible.

dudsville · 21/05/2024 15:11

I used dysons for about 15 yrs. I really like the ball. It makes it incredibly easy to manoeuvre. I got tired of the maintenance and of the canister that needed to be emptied outside, in all weather's, in order to avoid the dust and dander spread. I thought I would invest in a sebo instead. It's been 6 months, i still miss the ball but I'll never go back.

Aria20 · 21/05/2024 19:13

We had dysons for many years but eventually swapped to a shark with anti hair wrap. It's one for pets too - we have a dog and hoover every day. We have had the shark for 3.5 years and so far no issues at all and very happy with it. Also got a mini handheld shark to replace the handheld Dyson! Much better, much lighter to manoeuvre, easy to empty and clean, like the fact I can detach it to just carry the little part when hoovering the stairs not drag a whole hoover! Would never go back to a Dyson!

Oh yes, I know the reasons, just wonder how long the 'iconic British brand', 'British engineering excellence' etc marketing pitch can carry an overpriced, mediocre product in a market that's awash with superior competitors! Particularly as most of their operations are now in Asia and they even tried to move the HQ to Singapore.

I should rephrase my last sentence as I still don't understand why they're STILL so respected as a brand

TizerorFizz · 21/05/2024 19:55

@Dysonworker

Well they have their uni courses now! Other posters on HE boards think they are the bees knees. I doubt they are!

värskekapsas · 21/05/2024 20:16

not shark air wrap! I am so disappointed!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/05/2024 20:26

I had a Shark , it was shite , once the power was switched off it released a load of grit onto the carpet . Even if I kept it running a few seconds or tried switching off over a bin, it still did the dump.

I have a Halo Capsual , it's lightweight and rechargeable , it has bags so easy to empty .
Also got a George 3-in-1 which when I use for a heavy duty vacuum is a proper workout the power is immense .

We're a Dyson hair household , I bought the hairdryer 2 years ago , then a couple of weeks ago the Airstrait , it is amazing

VeraForever · 21/05/2024 20:33

We were in the same boat re Dyson.
Whenever we complained, it was always our fault.

We now use a Miele.
