Would you stay in a too-small flat to afford a big trip?

My partner and I live in a one bedroom flat. We work from home a lot, so would appreciate a second bedroom and some outside space. We could move to a bigger flat which would cost about £600 a month more in rent.

Or we could stay put, and use that money towards a 3 week dream trip travelling around New Zealand.

What would you do?

I'd buy. What are you thoughts on marriage?

Tristar15 · 19/05/2024 12:54

Save up for the trip then move after you come back from it.

What’s that got to do with the OP’s question 😂

I'd do the trip. If it was a case of buying a place, I'd choose the bigger flat...but if you're renting, I'd rather put the money to the holiday. That's assuming you can at least cope reasonably ok in the smaller flat.

This .

Assuming you're relatively young and baggage free I'd do the trip. I had a similar situation 40 years ago and I chose to go travelling around a particular country for 6 months. No regrets and wonderful memories. Go for it!

TwigTheWonderKid · 19/05/2024 13:02

How old are you OP?

LakeTiticaca · 19/05/2024 13:02

Depends really on a few things . How old are you, what are your goals for the future, do you want children.?

Quitelikeacatslife · 19/05/2024 13:11

Do the trip then when you get back save hard for deposit to buy as soon as as you can

EarringsandLipstick · 19/05/2024 13:13

Move, and start planning to buy

You can still put a smaller amount of money aside for the trip, it's in no way as essential as having a decent living space that meets your needs.

BaronessBomburst · 19/05/2024 13:16

I'd stay in the small flat and travel. Having lived in a larger flat won't be something you'll remember or look back on in years to come.

BigGlassHouseWithAView · 19/05/2024 13:22

If choose a bigger place over a 3 week holiday, but I’d find it stressful living in a small home with no outside space.

Miley1967 · 19/05/2024 13:25

Do the trip, you may not get the chance again.

eppw · 19/05/2024 13:29

No interest in buying for a few years - it's a falling market in London. Appreciate the advice might be different if we lived somewhere else 😀

No plans for kids! We are mid 20s

Renting - id stay as small as possible and go on the trip

If you’re waiting for a house price crash in London, make yourself comfortable.
Not happening anytime soon.

Thistooshallpass. · 19/05/2024 13:47

At your age and situation- the trip ! Make the most of your independence and opportunities.

Nottherealslimshady · 19/05/2024 13:50

I'd do the trip. If there were kids in cramped living conditions that would be different but I've always been of the mindset that a house just big enough to live in and plenty of spare income to live a good life is far superior to a house that costs so much you can't do anything but work to pay the thing off.

itsgettingweird · 19/05/2024 13:52

Trip.

When you get back you can save that £600 a month towards a deposit or something for the future.

betterangels · 19/05/2024 13:55

I'd definitely travel and get the experience instead of paying more off someone else's mortgage.

Comedycook · 19/05/2024 13:59

Even without the trip...I wouldn't waste an extra £600 renting a bigger place.

Why not?

I'd rather my day to day life was comfortable than tolerate a poorer living environment for a 3 week holiday to be honest.

Peonies12 · 19/05/2024 14:19

Definitely do the trip. We sacked in our flat and jobs for a year working abroad and travelling, best thing we ever did. Wish we would do it again but harder now with a mortgage and baby!

Nonewclothes2024 · 19/05/2024 14:42

Travel definitely.
