Would you stay in a too-small flat to afford a big trip?

My partner and I live in a one bedroom flat. We work from home a lot, so would appreciate a second bedroom and some outside space. We could move to a bigger flat which would cost about £600 a month more in rent.

Or we could stay put, and use that money towards a 3 week dream trip travelling around New Zealand.

What would you do?

As you're still so young I think I'd say trip, assuming you'd be able to upsize within a couple of years as WFH in a 1 bed place can't be great.

Landlubber2019 · 08/02/2025 11:33

You either do the trip now or write if off for the foreseeable future. Renting for another £600pcm means the trip will not be financially viable unless you have career progressions in hand which will allow you to pay rent and afford the holiday of a lifetime.

I'd do both. Take the trip asap and then save up to move. You only live once. If this is your dream trip, do it while you're still young and child-free.

House price crash in London 😂😂😂

Even if there were you would need cash to take advantage

MegTheForgetfulCat · 10/02/2025 07:53

Another who'd do the trip, then save the extra towards a deposit to buy somewhere.

Onlyvisiting · 10/02/2025 07:54

Neither! If I could only afford a 1 bedroom flat in rent without stretching myseld I'd far rather save the 7k a year towards securing my future than blow it on rent or a 3 week holiday.

itstrue · 10/02/2025 07:54

You don't need that much money for three weeks in NZ. Do your sums and then move after you have saved it.

Headingtowardsdivorce · 10/02/2025 07:57

I'd do the trip. I've always chosen travel over anything else (apart from the essentials obviously!).

StampOnTheGround · 10/02/2025 07:59

I'd do the trip, renting is literally throwing money down the drain every month - don't waste any more than you have to on that.

Enjoy the trip!

So, did you end up saving for the trip?
Are you in NZ right now?

Gaah, hadn't spotted this was a zombie thread! Why do people do this??

Mindymomo · 10/02/2025 09:20

I wonder what the OP did, I would have gone on the trip, loads of time to save and settle down afterwards.

MegTheForgetfulCat · 10/02/2025 09:21

Hopefully she's either there or looking forward to her trip!

Creameded · 10/02/2025 09:22

Do the trip, then move.

Favouritefruits · 10/02/2025 09:25

At your age I’d go with the dream holiday! You’ve got plenty of time to settle and save up for a bigger place. Definitely go travelling whilst you have no baggage and are young enough to do everything!
