My car has been stolen

AirheadMonent · 18/05/2024 19:43

From a tram park and ride car park. I had some items in the car, and on telling my partner on the phone what happened he immediately went on and on at me because I had things in the car and it's all my own fault.

Victim blaming extraordinaire. I hate him.

Police, insurance, CCTV for the car park. Ignore him for now, that's clearly not helpful. What was in the car and what does your insurance policy say about items in the car. Check your home insurance too.

I'm sorry this has happened to you. There are some shit people around.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 18/05/2024 19:57

Ignore your partner.
As @NigelHarmansNewWife says, police, insurance, park and ride operator to ask them to hold cctv for police. Hope your car is recovered ok.

If you had valuable items on display he's not really wrong, however there's no need to go on about it.
Hopefully your car will be found and returned in good condition and the criminals caught

Fernand · 18/05/2024 21:11

Don’t know which tram stop it was at, but Sale Water Park is covered in CCTV.
edited to add I’m assuming you mean Manchester trams…

lhlh · 18/05/2024 21:15

That's pretty mean of your partner. Get it reported to police ASAP.

AirheadMonent · 18/05/2024 21:24

I've reported to the police but I can't report to the insurers until tomorrow.

I feel filthy and invaded and so very angry.

They were bags for charity.

It's a horrible feeling. We had our car stolen off our driveway and there was nothing in it/on display. They came into the house while we (dh, kids and me) were asleep, and took the keys off the coffee table.

It was used for a robbery and was pretty banged up when it was recovered including knife marks in the seats. It's being repaired now.

Our insurance have been great so far so hopefully yours is the same.

Ignore your partner. He's an idiot. If people were determined to steal a car, the bags wouldn't have made a difference.

Hope you're OK. Violated is absolutely the right word for how this makes you feel.

I felt he was blaming me.

How did you get home? Really hope it can be traced, hate thieves

ShambalaAnna · 19/05/2024 00:39

A coworker had their Range Rover stolen (they're apparently really easy to nick) and was found less than a week later and two streets away by a neighbour. It had new plates, otherwise it was exactly as it was when carjacked. Police suspected it'd be halfway to Africa by the time they got wind of it.

My nieces car was stolen in Sheffield. The thief went on a joy ride, clocking up speeding tickets and culminating in a high speed chase with the police. He ended up wrapping the car round a bollard and escaping onto the roof of Meadowhall late at night.
My poor niece was at work and oblivious of the adventure her car was on.

The whole fiasco was complicated by speeding tickets and a large invoice from the council for damage to their property. Fortunately after much emailing she wasn’t held responsible.
It’s important to get a police incident number.
The thief had broken into a locked office at her workplace (pub) and taken her keys and cash from her handbag.
Initially she just thought she had lost her car keys, but then on reaching her car it wasn’t there.
It was all recorded on CCTV.

My friend who lives a few doors away and has a key to my house picked me up.

I am intrigued how cars are stolen with modern technology these days, sorry this can still happen.

Amx · 19/05/2024 09:34

I don't think the charity bags would make any difference, if it was just broken in to maybe but not totally stolen

What a pig your partner is. I'm sorry this happened.

Cars are stolen off people's drives every night of the week here (North London). The latest method is a rescue truck with false plates that turns up in broad daylight and lifts the cars over the bollards and gates that people have installed.
The police give you a crime number and that is all. The Next Door app is full of ring doorbell footage of cars being stolen, every day. Everyone knows about trackers, crook locks, alarms, faraday wallets, but the thieves seem to be able to get round everything.

I've seen tiktoks of theives stealing brand new cars with what looks like a metal coat hanger. They clone the key signal somehow and drive off in seconds.

Hannahthepink · 19/05/2024 09:39

My sister's car was stolen a few weeks ago from a quiet residential street (along with at least one of her neighbours' cars), and she had nothing on display. The gangs that are currently operating are totally out of control, the police have no idea how to even begin to tackle the scale of it. They're fast, organised, and face almost no opposition/investigation from police.
It is completely not your fault that they targeted your car. I hope that you have a good resolution from your insurance, and that you don't blame yourself.

Range rovers are the most popular. They are stolen to order and shipped to North Africa, OR, they are quickly taken to a location about 20 miles away and broken up for parts that are then sent to Europe. They are usually left a short distance away with false plates in case there is a tracker the thieves haven't found.
It is organised crime on a massive scale.

The modern technology makes it easier. Keyless entry allows people to scan for the correct frequency. Manufacturers know about it. Plenty on Google and YouTube. Car theft of premium brands is big business. It's not chancers. Of course there are joyriders etc but the 100 Range Rovers a week stolen in London is theft to order

Lovelyview · 19/05/2024 09:44

Clearly the thieves were after the car not the items in it otherwise they would just have broken a window. Ridiculous victim blaming by your partner.

Floormopandcrumbs · 19/05/2024 09:44

That should say left a short distance away for a couple of days.

InTheRainOnATrain · 19/05/2024 09:45

I don’t think the charity bags will have made a difference- a thief is unlikely to go from wanting your old clothes on the off chance there’s something valuable in there to let’s just steal the entire car.

If it’s a fairly nice car the done thing, I’m told by the police, is usually to park it very close by, to see if it’s being tracked, and then come back to it later. Mine was stolen, dumped 5 minutes up the road and we got it back because we realised quickly, it has a tracker and the police were surprisingly helpful. Could be worth getting a mate or your partner to drive you around the streets nearby to see if you can spot it?

Pedallleur · 19/05/2024 09:46

Note that the Govt were happy for the PO to pursue post masters but car theft of dozens of 50k plus vehicles a week? Well that's a police/insurance matter. Don't expect the Government to stop it but you can see the difference
