When do you brush your teeth?

RubyGemStone · 18/05/2024 11:33

Having much debate today on tooth brushing, want to get a general consensus to settle some at home arguments.

How often do you brush your teeth?
Do you floss/Mouth Wash/brush your tongue every time?

Most importantly, WHEN? As in, whats your routine? For example, after breakfast and right before you go to bed or as you wake up then in the evening but still eat/drink after.

what’s the arguing about?

ILikePistachios · 18/05/2024 11:36

Just before I leave for work and just before bed
I only brush and mouthwash in the morning, in the evening I brush, floss, brush again and mouthwash

In the morning before breakfast (brushing and tongue scraping only).

In the evening as part of a fairly long bedtime routine (includes flossing).

And I chew gum with xylitol after meals.

gamerchick · 18/05/2024 11:40

Why?

MaryFuckingFerguson · 18/05/2024 11:43

I brush when I wake up and again before bed if I’m going out in the evening, I’ll brush before that too. I floss with, little plastic brushes, most days.

I don’t eat breakfast, but when I did, I brushed before and always got my kids to do the same. My dentist told me this is much better than afterwards.

You don't brush before bed?

trickotreat · 18/05/2024 12:31

Brush as soon as I get up after going a wee!
A quick brush again to get my tongue and mouth fresh after my morning coffee ages before I head out.

Evening I brush and floss mid evening after all eating has been done apart from herbal teas

I read somewhere that you should use mouthwash before brushing (and not to rinse any toothpaste off so your teeth are better protected.

Countryrabbit · 18/05/2024 12:37

Brush first thing in morning before food/drink.
Floss then brush last thing at night (don't eat or drink anything after this).

BigGlassHouseWithAView · 18/05/2024 12:38

I brush in the morning about half an hour after breakfast and at night before bed, including tongue. I never eat at night after brushing. I use mouthwash at some point, usually after lunch or dinner.

I rarely floss as I hate the feel of it.

thanKyouaIMee · 18/05/2024 12:38

Brush / floss / mouthwash in the morning + at night, then brush or mouthwash after anytime I eat or drink anything that isn't plain water 😭 it's a bloody nightmare!

buffyslayer · 18/05/2024 12:38

Am - brush before anything else, don't rinse

Pm - floss, brush, don't rinse and then use tepe sticks to go in between teeth with toothpaste

buffyslayer · 18/05/2024 12:39

I don't brush after eating as you're just cleaning the soft enamel away then

Laughingfaceemoji · 18/05/2024 12:39

Before bed, floss and brush then when I get up for a wee before going to sleep I mouthwash and pop my retainer in.

In a morning before I leave for work just brush though as time is precious.

My mouthwash says to it’s better to use at a different time to brushing so I use it after lunch or dinner.

DominoRules · 18/05/2024 12:41

After breakfast then just before bed, if I’m going out for the evening I usually brush them before that too

DatingDinosaur · 18/05/2024 12:57

In a morning/my morning routine - have my first cup of tea then brush and use a tongue scraper then a bit of mouthwash.

In an evening/evening routine (to get rid of the day's food particles stuck in my teeth) - immediately before bed, floss, brush, tongue scraper, mouthwash then squidge a bit of toothpaste round my teeth.

My dentist told me to rinse with mouthwash after brushing, flossing, etc. because the mouthwash has antibacterial properties - he described it a bit like wiping a wound with TCP - you wouldn't wipe the TCP off afterwards.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 18/05/2024 12:58

Before i leave for work (i don't eat breakfast) and before bed. I always brush my tongue too. Once or twice a week i use an interdental toothbrush to get in gaps etc, should use more but i forget!

perimumma · 18/05/2024 13:07

Night time, just before I get into bed. Floss, teepee brush and electric toothbrush.

Mornings just brush, after brekkie.

MadridMadridMadrid · 18/05/2024 13:16

Brush first thing in the morning (before breakfast) and last thing at night.

Elebag · 18/05/2024 13:19

Brush about 30 mins after breakfast in the morning.

Brush and floss in the evening, around 8pm. No food or drink (except water) after that. No fillings, I'm 50

DoYouSmokePaul · 18/05/2024 13:19

Brush first thing when I get up (morning mouth is vile and I couldn’t eat breakfast with a dirty mouth!)

Mouthwash before I leave the house

Floss after my tea

brush and mouthwash again before bed

BiddyPop · 18/05/2024 13:48

I guess it depends on which type you're using. If it doesn't contain fluoride I'd definitely do it before brushing.
Made sense when I read it as you can use it to have a good swish around, especially if you brush after you've eaten.
