Knackered from the heat

I am absolutely glorying in the nice weather after the shite never-ending winter we've had. However today I'm really jiggered from a day in the sun.

I spent the day out with my toddler from 11-3. I know, the worst part of the day to be out in the sun, but we had a slow morning getting out. Both of us well covered, sun hat on him and suncream on both of us. Made sure to reapply the factor 50 regularly because I burn badly. We took a break in the shade for a picnic lunch. Drank lots of water.

But still I've had to take painkillers for this raging heat-induced headache. I'm not cut out for this sunshine.

Anyone else struggle?

😂'jiggered'

My mum used to say that.

ILikePistachios · 17/05/2024 20:12

I struggle with the heat every summer due to a health condition, it's horrible, the pain behind my eyes is unbearable and my whole body feels like it's shutting down.

I recommend adding salt to your diet during the hotter weather & use electrolyte sachets, I buy Liquid IV. Also take a cool shower in the evening, always helps me

Noname1000 · 17/05/2024 20:12

It was mild today at best.

Damnyourheadshoulderskneesandtoes · 17/05/2024 20:16

No, I'm the same. Don't know what I'll do when it actually gets hot!

I know the UK is small but it's not that small hen. You live on my street?

I wear a hat. Job done. I'm not made for the sun but recently was in 40 degrees, very humid and did all the things you should. Shade, clothes, hat, siesta, slow walk, avoid the middle of the day and was fine. 11-3 is BAD.

TryingToSeeTheFunnySide · 17/05/2024 20:22

It's not that hot where I am (southwest). About 14°C now. I think it went up to about 18°C earlier. But that's fine. I don't cope with extreme heat at all, but it's been fine so far here.
I noticed it's a bit hotter in London, and a few degrees can make all the difference.
The weather's still pretty fickle. It was hot last weekend. But dropped down by around 10 degrees on Monday.
I actually was fine with the cold rainy weather we had a few weeks ago! It's absolutely fine at the moment here. I like spring. I'm slightly dreading summer if it gets really hot!

Honestly I'd seek medical support if you found 4 hours in moderately warm temperatures with water, a hat and partly in the shade draining. That's genuinely not a normal response.

Baby had a hat, OP didn't. Rookie mistake.

What medical support do you recommend?

Do you think I could apply for a blue badge?

Ah apologies yes I see now in which case yes definitely a hat! It will stop you getting burnt on your head, prevent the headaches and act as a nice argument winner when the child suddenly decides he doesn't want to wear one.

Bomblesofbimbledon · 17/05/2024 20:27

Toddler wears his hat like a good wee man. Never takes it off.

I've never worn one because my hair is so thick my head has never burned and I just feel sweatier. I'll look into getting a hat.

It's been 25 degrees here. That's plenty hot. I don't understand posters telling me the temperature where they live. I don't live there.

Where are you? Its been perfect temp where I am.

Isitchill · 17/05/2024 20:32

Wear a hat on sunny days from now on. 25° really isn't too hot for mooching to the park.

It was the same where I live, roasty toasty. I’m laughing at your ‘jiggered’ and ‘hen’ comments 😂. You’re probably not far from me as we use the same words.

I'm as Celtic as they come but 25c isn't hot to me although I'd burn in less than an hour without sunscreen. I think though that it can just be a bit of a shock to the system as our weather changes so suddenly. Maybe in future avoid that hottest part of the day?

zimmericious · 17/05/2024 20:43

I am the same when it gets over a certain point - kind of feel like I am at risk of internal combustion

I wish I could enjoy the sun but I don't - don't love the feel of it on my skin, no clothes are loose enough, can't sleep

I too had enough of winter but a couple of warm days later no I have had enough

Sorry, by sharing the temperature where I am, I was just generally joining in the conversation 😊
I didn't actually realise it was 25°C anywhere today. But, I do remember noticing it was a lot hotter in Scotland than here when I saw the weather report. It's often the other way round!
Actually, 25°C is hotter than I like it. 23 is about max for active days. I also feel it's more June/July weather than May.
Not much of the country has it that hot yet. Hopefully it'll cool down for you again soon.
If you can't wear hats, could you wear a visor? I think hats/visors are the best way to stay cool. You're carrying your own shade with you at all times.

Bomblesofbimbledon · 17/05/2024 20:56

Definitely need to sort out a hat. Which kind of hat will make me least look like a tube?

And yes to PP who said it's the worst time of day to be out. My stupid arse got excited by the big glowy thing in the sky. Should have gone for a muck about in the woods where we'd have been shaded under the trees.

The past 2 weeks, I've felt the sun is hotter than before. My theory, rightly or wrongly, is that these solar storms we've been having must release more uv. So hat, covered, and staying under a tree between 11 and 3.

Plump82 · 17/05/2024 20:59

Knew you were in Scotland when you said jiggered! That was a word my dad used, so it made me smile.

I'm in Scotland too and didn't feel it particularly hot but I wasn't out running about with a toddler, so hats off (literally) to you. I found wearing a hat in Barcelona last year made such a difference to the temperature of my body so I'd definitely recommend that!

Interesting point about UV. Nursery have put out a message saying they apply suncream based on the UV numbers that day rather than how sunny it is/temperature etc.

Maybe higher UV knackers me.

I'm going to be more careful because I'm lying here absolutely done in from it.

Also knew you were in Scotland. It's bloody roasting. I know it's "only" 24 where I am, and I've coped for much longer periods of much hotter abroad before but I think it's the shock to the system after such a dismal winter and spring up here. I cannot cool down at all this evening.
