New kitchen colour regret

If you installed a coloured kitchen instead of white or oak do you regret it? I like the blues, greens and dare I say it dusty pink but I don’t want to regret it in a years time. Got to make a decision by 9am Tuesday, my head is saying different to my heart!

We got sage green. I really like it and I think it works well with the house. We also have a green-grey-ish colour front door, and pale green tiles in the bathroom. The rest of the house is pretty neutral. Obviously if we come to sell up the person who buys will probably have to like green!

WeDreamInPhosphoresence · 17/05/2024 20:31

I love mine and it's blue. The white equivalent looked boring as shit, and I think I'd have been tempted to repaint often to make it look more interesting.

justasking111 · 17/05/2024 20:33

My friend has pale pink units. Her kitchen is gorgeous.

I like green too.

I have a red and white kitchen and I still love it 12 years later - choose it for you and don’t worry what everyone else is doing

ClonedSquare · 17/05/2024 20:38

I painted our kitchen during Covid. The only thing I regret is that I did an amateur job! I chose a cobalt blue and absolutely love it still.

daisychain01 · 17/05/2024 20:48

This was taken about 4 years ago - I could never get tired of the colours, they are very restful. Duck egg is probably the most popular kitchen colour, it is timeless.

I've a dark blue kitchen (inherited it when we moved in). I really liked it but we're getting it resprayed soon and are going to go for a duck egg or sage green.

penjil · 17/05/2024 22:38

FfS, don't get dusky pink!! Not in a kitchen!

It's bad enough in a bedroom or bathroom!!

Tristar15 · 17/05/2024 22:49

Get what you like but make sure it’s in keeping with your house style. If you’re in your forever home then you don’t need to worry about other people liking it as you’re not selling. But think about how those coloured units will look in 10 or 20 years. The pink trend is going to look awful in a decade. Kitchens are very expensive so I agree you need to get it right. I got a white shaker style, can change the floor, tiles and paint easily knowing the actual kitchen will never date. I Put dark blue in the utility as I do love the dark blue styles but so glad it isn’t in my main kitchen.
The tiles a PP posted a picture off - beware, this style never look clean. They were in my old kitchen and I hated how the textured look always looked grubby no matter how much I cleaned!

JumpstartMondays · 17/05/2024 22:54

Ours is sage base units and white wall units.

It's gorgeous and I love it 🥰👌

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 17/05/2024 22:59

Mines navy. I love it !

BreatheAndFocus · 17/05/2024 23:00

Green or blue is ok, but I think pink wouldn’t appeal to as many people at all if/when you come to sell. I don’t dislike a nice dusky pink but I wouldn’t want it in my kitchen.

SabreIsMyFave · 17/05/2024 23:07

@daisychain01 Your kitchen is beautiful. 😍 I LOVE that duck egg blue, and the coloured tiles! Smile

@RainbowSlidders I'm sorry but I am not sure I would go for dusky pink.

Is it like this? If so - it's not too bad. But I would go for the same as daisychain's colour if I was going to have a coloured kitchen.

Could you post a pic? Red is my favourite colour and I'm tempted to redo mine in red. At the moment I've just got a red piece of art on the wall.

Everything I've read says pick the colour you like as the next owner will probably redo it anyway.

I painted my cabinets 9 years ago. They still look perfect. I'd recommend it if you are undecided on colours as it's pretty cheap and easy to do. I'm really pleased I did paint them as I was thinking of a cream colour for when I eventually redo the kitchen but now I'm going to do white as that looks great with my wall colour.

Crispynoodle · 17/05/2024 23:19

I have sandstone doors from Howdens which in my kitchen look grey......I do regret them but also can't think of a colour I'd rather. Luckily Howdens is in walking distance so I would just need to change the doors if I wanted to!

evilharpy · 17/05/2024 23:25

Mine are wooden but now painted sage green, with a wood-looking worktop and white tiles. I love it but could easily paint it a different colour if I felt the need.

I love the pink one @SabreIsMyFave posted, I could definitely live with that.

caringcarer · 17/05/2024 23:27

Mine is oak and I like it. I know it's totally out of fashion but it's well made. The thought of a coloured kitchen makes me a little anxious.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 17/05/2024 23:27

I love that pink one!

Aquamarine1029 · 17/05/2024 23:31

I love things passionately until I can’t stand them suddenly. So for me a neutral kitchen is a better choice, and I can easily paint walls, or use pops of colour and change on a whim.

This is me, too. We recently had our kitchen redone and we went with warm/soft white cabinets and butcher block countertops. I have a lot of blue glass, blue accents all over my kitchen and it brings me so much joy. In a month, a year or two I can use another accent colour for a fun change. Personally, I would get sick and tired of the same specific colour on my cabinets.

Not out of fashion at all, actually. You're on trend, in fact. 😊 Wood tone cabinets are back big time.

mollyfolk · 17/05/2024 23:37

Ours was a grey which I have resprayed to an “oyster white” and replaces the glossy tile floor with wood - it’s brought our kitchen from 2006 to 2024!

It’s impossible to pick something that won’t date. The shape of our upper units have dated. Just pick something you like and look at very high end styles that you can copy and that haven’t made it to the more mainstream shops yet.

nodogz · 18/05/2024 00:32

I have a lilac one. And I chose it.

Right now I have pinky walls so it looks more purple but it could look more grey with a different wall colour.

Floor is polished concrete, worktops are white and a mauve-grey and hardware is satin brass.

I bloody love it. I could look at it everyday for 20 years. It sounds gaudy but is fairly tasteful in pastel sunset tones.

TeenLifeMum · 18/05/2024 00:34

I’m not planning to move any time soon so chose the kitchen I loved - navy blue with white quartz surface and a delicate sprinkling of glitter. Get the kitchen that makes you smile.

Penguinsa · 18/05/2024 00:36

Have pale blue and love it.

daisychain01 · 18/05/2024 06:13

@nodogz I could look at it everyday for 20 years
give me anything lilac / mauve hues and I could gaze at it for hours, probably why I can't be without a haze of lavender in the garden each year. It's definitely a mood-changer, so calming!

@SabreIsMyFave thank you for liking my kitchen 😊 It was definitely a love at first sight thing. We went to a local builders' merchants where they had a huge showroom full of different coloured and wood kitchens, and the moment I saw the dark duck egg, I said "that's the one" and I've never regretted it.

The pink kitchen you've posted - normally I'm not a pastel or a pink person but I could definitely live with that, it's very fresh and the light coloured wood goes really well (plus the fact it's massive, spacious and airy helps!)
