Wearing coats in hot weather

Hi a woman with children across from me are wearing coats instead of sun cream in this hot weather she’s sat watching him play with a friend and I know that the father of her children spends their money on alcohol when the bin men come around there’s loads of alcohol bottles and cans to be collected he goes to the shop most days for it I don’t know if she’s just allergic or if she has no money for sun cream which I suspect I have a spare bottle I could offer but I don’t want to upset anyone I live in a neighbourhood where everyone wants to help each other if they need , but I have never spoken to her

Stop being a judgy pants and concentrate on your own life.

Also: please use punctuation. Your post comes across as being one long rushed comment that you can't wait to get out before you burst with righteous indignation.

I think you'd be better off spending your time worrying about full stops instead of what the neighbours are doing.

Solidlump · 17/05/2024 16:19

I'm sure you are meaning to be kind but there may be lots of reasons they are wearing coats and not having money for suncream might not be the reason at all.
I think if you were to offer her suncream she might possibly be offended or upset so I don't know if I would do that.
If you dont normally talk to her she might be pleased to talk to you if you can strike up casual conversation - possibly about the children? If she is feeling isolated because of her partners drinking she might appreciate that.

TuesdayWhistler · 17/05/2024 16:26

Why would you jump to them lacking sun cream?

That seems odd.

People wear clothes in the sun, if they have sensitive skin its better for it to be covered.

People also run at different temps. 19/20c and I'm sweating like a lump of lard in a chippy.
Some people think that's cold and have their heating set higher.

It's also weird that you're monitoring their alcohol consumption based on their bin.

Sunscreen??? It's been foggy all day. Max of 13C
I'd love to see some blue sky!

It's been gorgeous here.
I took the dog out for a couple hours, sat in the park with a coffee in the sun, got sweaty and moist, came home.
I think it was around 19/20c

MYOB

Blarn · 17/05/2024 19:48

Maybe they feel it is better to cover up than rely on suncream.

FLOWER1983 · 17/05/2024 19:53

I was wearing a light coat today, i get cold even when its over 20 degrees currently shaking under my blanket

LakeTiticaca · 17/05/2024 20:00

Why don't you invite her and.the kids over, get to know them?

LostGhost · 17/05/2024 20:05

I wear long sleeves/light coats all year round.

I burn incredibly easily (Even applying suncream every 10 minutes it just burns through) and I have some scars from when my mental health hasn't been great that i'd rather not display to the world.

I also really feel the cold so whilst today it's been a beautiful sunny day (around 21/22) i've felt a bit cold

It's not really any of your business why she's covered up...

First of all, why are there so many posts like this on Mumsnet? Like, why the fuck do you think the weather round your bit is the same as the rest of the country? Madness. It's been 23 degrees on the west coast of Scotland and blue skies all day.

Secondly, OP, I don't even know what your post is going on about. Stop looking in other people's bins and get on with your life.

ArcticBells · 17/05/2024 20:15

Why on earth would she be worrying about sunscreen? Maybe she doesn't find the day as warm as you do Confused

MoggyP · 17/05/2024 20:17

Bit creepy that you're examining the contents of their bin, and then inventing an entire narrative

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 17/05/2024 20:17

Were they winter coats?

If yes, you might be into something, but still none of your business, especially if you're not friendly with the woman.

If not, and they are light jackets/coats it's probably choice(for whatever reason) or they left home on foot early in the morning when it was still chilly.

That’s a you problem. Not the OP’s 😅

OneLemonOrca · 17/05/2024 21:58

I was worried they might get upset.
To clarify they were wearing winter coats not zipped with hoods up in very hot sunny weather. Where I am it has been roasting the last few days. I was out for a few minutes without sun cream and got nasty sun burn. So it’s not a case of me having a preference of temperature. It literally was roasting

Their bin is usually over flowing with it, I’ve seen it get emptied there was loads and their glass bin is always full of bottles

What's the worst that can happen? Go over and say in a friendly manner - Hi, noticed your kids are in coats, do you want my spare bottle of sun cream for them?

She'll only say oh yes please or no (piss off maybe)
Then you'll know.

Aswellisnotoneword · 17/05/2024 22:10

Define 'roasting' please? In actual temperature.
