Anyone use Amazon WITHOUT Prime?- what's it like?

mangochutneyjar · 17/05/2024 13:25

My prime is due for renewal in June. I feel a bit annoyed at paying £95 because half the time, my items dont actually arrive the next day, they're often 2-3 days late anyway. Also, they advertise items as being prime in the search but when it comes to payment it often turns out they arent.

Does anyone use Amazon without Prime and how do you find it?- delivery times etc. Thank you :)

I mostly always get what I want next day and even same day (by 10pm). I love Prime, cannot do Amazon without it!

P.s. I'm not in London not any major city. Small countryside village

BertieBotts · 17/05/2024 13:32

It's fine but I've never been that bothered by next day delivery.

The most annoying thing of not having Prime is having to make up to a minimum basket amount before getting free delivery. But usually we just add some dishwasher tablets or something to make it up to the right amount. Or leave stuff in the basket until we want to buy something else.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 17/05/2024 13:32

Am I naive, I thought most people didn't have prime

If I want something I buy it like on any website and it turns up in accordance with the sellers Ts and Cs

I had no idea that wasn't how you're meant to do it

I recently did a month without Prime.... I'd forgotten that you pay for delivery on every order under £25 and that some items just aren't available to non prime customers. I've paid for prime!!!!!

If you see something which says prime but at checkout isn't go back to the listing and look in the available from these sellers and you'll find the one with prime delivery in the list.

Zonder · 17/05/2024 13:34

It's years since I had experience of Amazon without prime but I'm surprised to read you have such slow deliveries. Everything we order comes when it says, if not sooner. Not in a city.

starlingsintheslipstream · 17/05/2024 13:35

I won't pay for Prime. I rarely need anything urgently so am happy to wait. Often orders can be delivered the following day or day after anyway. I think they just despatch ASAP regardless but obviously don't guarantee quick delivery. They'll often offer a free trial so between 3 or 4 accounts in the household (me, dh, teenage dc) we can usually take advantage of that if we are desperate for next day delivery or want to watch a specific series.

Stressfordays · 17/05/2024 13:35

I couldn't live without prime. Saved my arse many of times!

Yep! Its been so long since I haven't had it, I cant remember what it was like before.

Items often seem to be delayed, am in a suburban area near a town so not too far out

I'm not willing to pay for Prime. Once a year they give me a free trial and I enjoy it but cancel before payment is due. I find that not having prime saves me money in more ways than one - I usually add things to my basket and if it doesn't add up to the minimum amount for free delivery (£25 currently) then I just leave it in the basket until o need something else. Then, surprisingly often, when I go back to the basket I realise I didn't really need to buy that thing after all. When I have prime I add stuff to the basket and buy it straight away - way more expensive.

I still use subscribe and save very successfully without prime and I do have an Amazon Music subscription too.

Poachedeggavocado · 17/05/2024 13:37

I'm keeping prime due to the movies, books and music. Agree the delivery time doesn't always make a huge difference these days though.

kitsuneghost · 17/05/2024 13:38

You do have to spend a certain amount for free delivery but that's no problem
I just keep in my basket until I need something else. (I usually order something every month anyway)
Do you need everything to be next day? I get maybe once in a blue moon you need it urgent but enough for £95?

NahNeedsGarlic · 17/05/2024 13:38

I don’t have Prime and it’s fine. If you choose delivery to Amazon lockers it’s usually free delivery even under £25. Standard home delivery usually arrives within 1-2 days. We’re rural too.

mangochutneyjar · 17/05/2024 13:39

I literally just spoke with customer service and I am paying for Amazon music and kindle separately anyway it seems, so cancelling prime wont affect that. It will affect movies but there are so many channels now on amazon that you have to pay separately for anyway I'm not sure its worth it

BournvilleEgg · 17/05/2024 13:39

Oh sorry, you were asking about delivery times. I don't really notice much difference - maybe it's slightly quicker with prime but not much.

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 17/05/2024 13:41

I much prefer not having prime as the lack of free delivery unless you spend a certain amount stops me buying a lot of purchase. Although I do use delivery to the amazon lockers on occasion as seems some things you can still get free delivery even if you don't have the minimum £25 spend.

I think it depends how much you buy. If you make more than 20 small purchases a year (less than £25) then Prime is probably worth keeping

We cancelled simply because our drivers kept leaving things on the doorstep which lead straight onto the road so we complained numerous times, kept happening so we withdrew our Prime membership. We don't miss it. Make use of free trials around black friday time then cancel before we are due to pay

Oh I had completely forgotten that was case before Prime- thanks.

I guess I dont need things the next day, it's just become a convenient expectation. I dont think I've ever had something the same day by 10pm even with prime

GasPanic · 17/05/2024 13:42

Prime's OK but I use it more for the telly than the fast delivery.

You do get used to having stuff delivered quickly. If you are ordering a lot of amazon stuff, then combined with the telly it is a good deal.

If not then I wouldn't bother.

mangochutneyjar · 17/05/2024 13:45

Thanks everyone- I think I might try it without Prime and see how it goes. Can always re-new if it gets unbearable 😆

I would say easily 60% of the stuff I order takes 2-3 days to arrive even with prime. Thats not an awfully long time at all obv but it just made me wonder why I'm paying for it in the first place

I stopped about 6 months ago and tbh have barely noticed a difference
The last few things I've bought the sellers have done free shipping anyway
Also if you're happy to have something delivered to a pick up location rather than your house you don't have to pay shipping even if its under £25
The pick up location is next to the supermarket I got to anyway so it's not out of my way. Plus tbh sometimes it's more convenient as I don't have to worry about being out when the parcel is delivered
Why not try without for a month and see how you go, its no more expensive to stop and start again than to stay loyal!

If you use prime video or music then it's probably worth it overall but for slightly faster deliveries not really for me

1offnamechange · 17/05/2024 13:48

Just to add the pick up location for free delivery isn't just the lockers - there's usually a mix of local post office, corner shops etc as well

DahliaMacNamara · 17/05/2024 13:48

We rarely have Prime, unless there's something we want to see on the Amazon channel, when we pick up a free trial, then cancel. We probably order less than once a month, and it's cheaper to pay for delivery if it doesn't hit the minimum spend. We find that it tends to get bunged onto a van when it's coming round anyway (also rural), and it often shows up a day earlier than expected. On the rare occasions we have Prime, we don't really notice a difference in delivery timescales.

TallulahBetty · 17/05/2024 13:52

Surely the majority of people DON'T have Prime?

I don't, and most deliveries come within 24-48 hours.

AlltheFs · 17/05/2024 13:53

DH is threatening a trial of no Prime but the reality is we need it. We order probably an average of 5 things a week and we watch things on TV too so it’s good value.

We are rural and 8 mile trip just for milk and 40 mins for a big DIY store so the convenience is worth the cost. We’d spend the delivery fees just on parking alone to collect items from a store.

Our Prime items are pretty much always next day, but Prime isn’t advertised as a next day service. There are next day Prime items and longer delivery Prime items which just means you don’t pay for delivery. I always check.

It’s probably worth a trial though, after all it takes no time to rejoin. I can’t imagine we’d last a week.

Namechangeforthis88 · 17/05/2024 13:57

Haven't had Prime for years. Don't really notice the difference. I reckon for the most part they just send it exactly the same either way. But really, how much are some people getting off Amazon? There are other suppliers for most things and most are pretty quick these days.

I use Amazon as little as I can these days. It's absolutely fine. No way would I give them extra money.
