What's the solution to everyone using a bread bin as a bread plinth?

FireworksAndSparklers · 16/05/2024 18:28

It's doing my head in. The bread bin gets full so people put stuff on top, then the stuff in the bread bin goes stale or gets used but the top stuff doesn't get transferred so we often have a near empty bread bin with wraps and buns and bread piled on the top! Any clever solutions? Any way of getting the bread bin/plinth off our countertop completely???

Perspex container in the cupboard - bread, wraps etc go in their respective bags in there. Keep fine and not on counter top.

We got rid of the bread bin for this reason!

WonderingWanda · 16/05/2024 18:50

I can't win with bread in my house, if I don't buy it they all moan. If I buy a Littlebury ot goes instantly and they all moan. If I buy plenty no fucker eats any of it and I find it all gone mouldy.

No room for a bread bin here. So I have a shower caddy/hanging basket hooked on the end of the cabinets. All bread items go in that.

ringoutsolsticebells · 16/05/2024 19:38

We freeze all our bread and wraps. No need for a bread bin

Notreat · 16/05/2024 19:42

I only keep the bread we are using in the bread bin. The freshly bought bread goes in the freezer. It is transferred to the bread bin when it's empty. And the freezer is filled up again.

The bread bin situation really pisses me off. There's bread, wraps, pitta bread...everywhere no idea what to do with it except buy a bucket and stick it all in there

We do have a bucket type situation in our house except I use a large cake size tupperware tub without the lid. Everyone can see what's in there and what needs using up. it's definitely helped with us having less wasted bread products

LoobyDop · 16/05/2024 19:47

Bread sits in its paper bag on top of the toaster. It’s too stale for anything but toast after a day even if you use a bread bin, so they don’t earn their counter space.

MavisPennies · 16/05/2024 19:48

Think of the bread bin as a religious effigy which the bread products must congregate around before their demise.

soupfiend · 16/05/2024 19:50

We dont eat bread any more. This solved the problem.

Runningbird43 · 16/05/2024 19:50

Bread bin in a cupboard on a shelf here.

AuroraAnimal · 16/05/2024 19:52

We had this. Bread, wraps and pittas all constantly piled on top of the empty bread bin 🙄

I solved it by removing the wooden bread bin lid.

Now we just use it as an open-topped bread container which (without the apparently insurmountable issue of a removable lid) everyone now uses!

Iamnotalemming · 16/05/2024 19:52

This happens at DM's house. Inside is a morass of hardened loaf ends, fresh stuff in the vicinity and crumbs all over.

Probably in response to growing up in this home, I have a large tupperware box on the side at home. Easier to see what's in there and reduce the crust monster.

Bin the bread bin ! Keep bread and similar items in the fridge instead.

You heathen! 😂

LER83 · 16/05/2024 19:55

We had this for years, then one day I decided to buy a bigger bread bin! Can fit everything in it now!

Withswitch · 16/05/2024 19:55

We have a bread item drawer. Bread, crumpets, wraps etc. all go in.

stayathomer · 16/05/2024 19:58

We’re exactly the same op. Someone once came to visit and their child said ‘ooh is that your bread corner?!’ We freeze a lot now instead and just use the bread bin for what we need for the few days.

(whispers) I love the bread bin

Heelworkhero · 16/05/2024 20:01

I had one, the bread would get forgotten about as it wasn’t in direct sight, so would go mouldy and eventually the inside of the bin got mouldy too, so I chucked it and never bothered since.

No, that’s a lie - I purchased another, with a lid that also served as a board to slice bread.
It was used to chop all sorts of things on and scored badly so it looked awful, so I chucked it.

I make do with having a pretty egg house instead, which has cardboard egg boxes (full of eggs) piled on top of it………

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/05/2024 20:06

We got rid of the bread bin entirely and now bread lives on top of the microwave. Not helpful I know.

SnakesAndArrows · 16/05/2024 20:09

Mine has a dome top so it’s more difficult to balance stuff on it than to open it.

HighlandCowbag · 16/05/2024 20:09

I have a bread shelf. Not in a cupboard or anything. It's a big tin with a lid with a sign saying bread on it.

Debating binning the bin and resorting to the cupboard.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/05/2024 20:13

We have one of these, outside the back door.

We just pop it in the top and take it out the bottom.

Seems to work quite well. We have to beat the rats off occasionally but that's a small price to pay for correctly, timely-phased bread.

What's the solution to everyone using a bread bin as a bread plinth?
Keepthosenamesgoing · 16/05/2024 20:16

Yep feel your pain!

reluctantbrit · 16/05/2024 20:18

How much bread do you all have?

We have some sliced bread we toast so it lives next to the toaster. Bread I make is in a fabric bag and is used in 2 days and I make a new loaf.

I may have some English muffins or tea cakes for the weekend, bought on Friday, gone by Sunday morning.

Yourethebeerthief · 16/05/2024 20:25

Just don't have one. I never have and don't understand what their purpose is. Bread is packaged. We just put a clip on it and all the various bready things sit in a sizeable shallow wicker basket on our counter. You can easily see everything we have in.
