What's the solution to everyone using a bread bin as a bread plinth?

FireworksAndSparklers · 16/05/2024 18:28

It's doing my head in. The bread bin gets full so people put stuff on top, then the stuff in the bread bin goes stale or gets used but the top stuff doesn't get transferred so we often have a near empty bread bin with wraps and buns and bread piled on the top! Any clever solutions? Any way of getting the bread bin/plinth off our countertop completely???

No solution, but I thought this only happened in my house 🤔

Organise/check it either every evening or every morning.

Don't put new stuff on top, keep that in a cupboard until the bread bin needs topping up.

This is why I don’t have a bread bin! All in a drawer in a cupboard in our house

The bread bin situation really pisses me off. There's bread, wraps, pitta bread...everywhere no idea what to do with it except buy a bucket and stick it all in there

And mine. I got rid of it and it's now filled with all the different flours for my bread making.

Bread is just piled on the side, like it always was...

I don't have a bread bin, I just buy an Aldi half sourdough loaf and two packets of tortillas a week.

Cheeesus · 16/05/2024 18:36

We have a cupboard for actual bread and the bread bin is only for muffins and bagels etc.

JayeAshe · 16/05/2024 18:37

Bin the bread bin ! Keep bread and similar items in the fridge instead.

KittensSchmittens · 16/05/2024 18:37

Bread goes in a deep drawer in our house - bread bin would be nowhere near big enough for a weeks worth of bread

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 16/05/2024 18:38

I just got rid and keep on top of microwave

MillshakePickle · 16/05/2024 18:38

Buy less! Sounds like you're over buying.

TakeMeToKernow · 16/05/2024 18:38

We too have a “bread area” at the centre of which is an empty bread bin 🤣

TheNoodlesIncident · 16/05/2024 18:38

We've got a bread bin with two compartments and a transparent door, so you can see what's inside it. For some reason that makes it a lot easier to keep track of what there is. We only put bread, rolls, buns/small packs of cake in ours - wraps, naan, etc stay in the pantry as they're a bit big.

Stoufer · 16/05/2024 18:38

We don’t have a bread bin - we used to have the same problem, but I cleared some space in the larder cupboard, and have an open plastic basket in there that has bread goods in, so it all gets put in there, and as there is no lid, you can see what you’ve got. I also freeze a lot of bread products, like bagels, scones, crumpets, loaves left-over sections of baguette (and I have even tried freezing wraps, but have not tried defrosting them yet, so not sure if that works okay. What I had also been doing is making up the whole week’s worth of sandwiches, and freezing those in individual portions, so that reduces the bread in the bread bin waiting to be used. I think the only solution to the bread platform / bread bin issue is get rid of it, and use your cupboard and freezer more…

Gosh not had a bread bin for about 40 years.. nor do l know anyone who does.
..myself and family use a cupboard .

Mothersruin123 · 16/05/2024 18:39

No solution, but solidarity!

My granny had one that opened at the front rather than at the top. A family member also has this style, but also has stuff piled on top so not sure if it's actually a solution or not!

maudelovesharold · 16/05/2024 18:39

I keep my bread in the freezer. It’s all to do with freezing and then toasting making the starch resistant, which is better for you, but has the additional benefit of not filling up the bread bin, which I can then use for odds and ends like scones etc! You can toast bread from frozen, and it defrosts quickly anyway, if you want it for sandwiches.

Storminagoblet · 16/05/2024 18:40

Mine too. 🙋‍♀️ it acts like a shelf and also people entirely fill the space in front of it with bread so...

NahNeedsGarlic · 16/05/2024 18:40

The bread lives in a cupboard, the actual bin is on a high shelf and filled with spare plastic containers.

Chasingsquirrels · 16/05/2024 18:42

I have a bread shelf in the cupboard above the kettle & toaster.
Sandwich loaf, wraps, pittas etc.
I also freeze loaves and wraps, they come out fine.

TemuSpecialBuy · 16/05/2024 18:44

I have a really big wham box in a cupboard under the counter.

It’s essentially a bread box it works incredibly well as can accommodate multiple loaves and crumpets and whatever Other carby nonsense my husband brings home

thistimelastweek · 16/05/2024 18:45

Not naming names or anything, but there are people here for whom the higher level bread management course was very useful.

Bronfenbrenner · 16/05/2024 18:45

Our solution was to get a rescue cat that eats through the packaging of any bread products left outside the bread bin. He particularly likes Riverford Organic croissants. Hey presto everyone now remembers to put the bread away and rotate!

I am aware this solution may not work for everyone...

stickygotstuck · 16/05/2024 18:46

What you need is a Roll top bin .
