Lifebuoy

Just a lifebouy? 😳

crumbpet · 16/05/2024 09:10

anything you could be wearing on a ship just before it sinks what a poor theme. People drowning isn't fun. I would refuse to go.

What’s the difference?

For some bizarre reason the titanic is seen as fun but any other death at sea won't be. I don't know why. I blame the film but even before then it wad romantised somewhat. It's sick and disrespectful.

Why can't it just be "dress like you're on a cruise"

TheTripThatWasnt · 16/05/2024 09:21

Putting the (in poor taste) theme to one side, I always think fancy dress is a wasted opportunity to actually get dressed up in something nice and enjoy wearing an outfit that makes you feel good. I'm not a fan of any kind of theming - doesn't make me a 'fun sponge' (to quote a PP).
I'm also not a fan of fancy dress as it encourages people to buy loads of single-use tat, which is environmentally unsound and will have mainly been produced in sweatshops somewhere. But that's a different soap-box altogether!

peanutbuttertoasty · 16/05/2024 09:25

Recently listened to the rest is history series about the titanic. Would recommend. It’s pretty chilling and really brings it home how horrific an accident it was.

George Orwell said in one of his essays that he realised when reading about the sinking of the Titanic that it upended and sank bow foremost, so the people clinging on at the stern were lifted three hundred feet in the air before the ship plunged into the sea. You can only imagine their terror at that and knowing what was coming.

And thinking dressing as a Titanic victim or survivor is tasteless does not make anyone a 'fun sponge.' Would anyone go to fancy dress as a survivor of a torpedoed merchant ship in WW2?

Voltefarce · 16/05/2024 18:20

Blimey. This is such a common fancy dress theme. I’m not sure why everyone is linking it specifically to dressing as survivors of the Titanic.

The point is, dress as if it’s an evening and you are doing whatever you happen to be doing, and then have to assemble somewhere public. I’ve seen some very funny interpretations of what people might have been doing just before the alarm is sounded - I’m sure you could use your imagination.

As I said upthread, I usually take the excuse to wear something nice and go evening dress. As if I were at a party when the alarm sounded. I’ve also worn my sailing gear before (which was admittedly a lazy interpretation).

If it helps those who are sensitive, perhaps the theoretical ship goes down without any loss of life.

We usually go in evening dress plus life jackets for this theme.

Awful

Yes, they did.

Cool! Perhaps not Eric Prydz style 😄 but now I see it’s not just a Titanic related theme.

Yeah can just imagine how totally funny it would be to throw clothes on knowing you and your family were going to die.

It's pretty poor taste, surely, with the amount of migrant boats currently coming over? It's only 2 or 3 weeks since 5 people including a child died.

How fun, to dress as a desperate illegal immigrant.

QueSyrahSyrah · 16/05/2024 19:46

Flummoxed by the social circles for which this is such a 'common fancy dress theme' that it elicits a 'we usually wear...' response.

I've heard of 'Dead Famous' more than once, 20s / 70s / 80s themed, themes where everyone should come as something starting with a certain letter, but never 'come dressed for a tragic & horrifying loss of human life'.

Lulu1919 · 16/05/2024 19:57

A towel ....you were in the bath together
Pjs
Full dinner dress...eating
Swimwear...

Thepatioisready · 16/05/2024 20:03

Blimey - it's a really well known expression for something massive ending in disaster.
It doesn't have to be taken literally, although clearly it's based on ships, given we are an island and all that.

crumbpet · 16/05/2024 20:05

Dress like your house is on fire in the middle of the night and you've managed to get out while it burns....

Agree with you.

Am flabbergasted that more than one poster unless it is a name changer has been to several parties in such poor taste.

Tosstyhat · 16/05/2024 22:52

I genuinely don't know how to interpret this theme or why anyone would want to do it. I think themes based on disasters where lots of people died are in really poor taste so if it's Titanic-based then it's definitely not for me. What's next? 9/11 themed fancy dress?

Tell me it was the pink and lilac dress she wears while running through all that steam 😍

As for the theme, easiest would be pyjamas or normal evening dress w/ life jacket.

I have to say though, what a horrible theme. I normally like a bit of fancy dress but dressing up as people who’ve died a horrible death, ick.

Sorry! It was this one.

Also very beautiful! I remember watching titanic as a kid and just being absolutely entranced by rose and her dresses 😍

Usually? How often do you go to parties with this theme?!

There's a room in Titanic Belfast that taps out messages of the final SOS messages so you can hear them as well as read them, it is chilling. They have a huge wall with names of all the deceased and survivors on too. It is very sobering.

MyFlightWasAwfulThanksForAsking · 11/02/2025 12:20

I don't see a problem with the theme, the party goers have clearly survived the shipwreck so it's fine.
