£1.89 for a Wispa in WH Smith, WTF?

Unopenedpackofmenssocks · 13/05/2024 18:41

I was just charged this in WH Smith in Gatwick. Not an extra large one, not a “Duo”, a bog standard 36g basic Wispa.

What would you pay in a corner shop? I’d expect about £1 maybe?

What a bunch of total profiteers. Wasn’t even airside.

I always look at the price first

MaryFuckingFerguson · 13/05/2024 18:45

I would have absolutely no idea. I’d guess about £2 or less? £1 seems very cheap. But then I haven’t bought a bar of chocolate in about 20 years.

Stoufer · 13/05/2024 18:45

I remember when a mars bar was 14p… prices are shocking nowadays..

ByUmberViewer · 13/05/2024 18:46

Yeah prices have soared recently. It's outrageous, a bar of chocolate always used to be a cheap little treat even when times were financially hard.

LakeTiticaca · 13/05/2024 18:47

Always more expensive in airports and motorway services. Probably paying massive rents and they have a captive audience 😉

I've never really believed the excuse that motorway service stations use about high rents? Are they really saying that the rent in a Grimsby Service Station is more than in Knightsbridge? Agree it's just that they have a captive audience.

GirlOverboard123 · 13/05/2024 18:56

It's the airport and railway station outlets that keep WHSmith in business, and people are obviously willing to pay those prices, so I think it's fair enough really. I always bring a picnic from home when I'm going to the airport or on a long train journey, so I do think £1.89 is very expensive (75p would be my limit). But I'm happy to see WHSmith making a profit somewhere, as it would be quite sad if they left the high street.

£1 for that bar of choc is not cheap!

Pandaandpurple · 13/05/2024 19:08

I wouldn’t pay that, OP.

I picked up a big pack of post it notes in WHS recently and quickly put it back when I noticed it was £15.99!

Dinnerlady12 · 13/05/2024 19:10

I just paid £1.50 for a multipack of 4 out of the Spar!

I believe the reason motorway services are expensive if that they have to be open 24/7/365 and the cost of doing that at 3am when no one's there has to be recouped during the busy houra

Same here. I just wouldn't buy it at that price.

Makes the meal deal where you can get a drink, sandwich and the Wispa for a fiver look a bargain in comparison.

It’s ridiculous isn’t it. Iforgot to take a notebook when travelling to a meeting so popped into the WHSmith at the station. The cheapest one was a small reporters notepad of lesser quality than I have seen in Poundland and it was £5.99! I left it and borrowed some paper from a colleague.

hattie43 · 13/05/2024 19:30

I just refuse to pay those prices . I remember being at Victoria station and fancied some chocolate for the train journey . A bog standard bag of Maltesers £3.95 . Needless to say they stayed there .

TheThingIsYeah · 13/05/2024 19:36

WH Smith is so overpriced I was surprised they are still around until someone pointed out to me they've got the airports sewn up. Surely once the liquids ban gets lifted that's their business model up in smoke?

If someone wants to pay £1.89 for a snack sized wispa then good luck to them, but I'm still disappointed that people would. Mugs.

SendARavenToRiverRun · 13/05/2024 19:50

WHsmith have a strong hold on our local hospitals as well. They own the shops AND the cafe. So overpriced and gutting when you're stuck in hospital without much choice. I'd have been shocked at the price OP, I'd have put it back tbh.

Tatatara · 13/05/2024 19:54

I pack my snacks at home. £1.89 is about the same price as a supermarket four pack.

Bumblebeesandflowers · 13/05/2024 20:05

Everything's a rip off at WH Smith

You haven't bought a bar of chocolate for 20 years? Not even for someone else?

mitogoshi · 13/05/2024 20:12

Dp laughs but I pack us a picnic if going out of our local airport, and I take empty water bottles and refill. I do let him buy coffee. Return journey I buy snacks from a supermarket or steal from the breakfast buffet

Why do people do this? Come onto a thread to post pure shite that has absolutely no relevance to a OP.

Think about how large the area of motorway services are, most have a unit on both sides, and I believe they are liable for costs towards the maintenance of the slip roads etc. If I'm.wrong I'm.sure someone will be along to correct me 😆

tinytemper66 · 13/05/2024 20:17

Why did you buy it? I would never pay that for a bar of chocolate 🍫

They're probably an experienced mumsnetter which is why they don't eat chocolate. It's the only way to make a chicken last a year, by being size french.
