Never leave your home country again - or never be able to go to your home country again. Which would you choose?

I agonise over this; really struggle to decide which I’d do.

Rules: visas etc no object, you could live anywhere else in the world. starting with same standard of living/set up that you currently have.
Those you live with come with you.
Others can visit you, but you can’t ever return to your home country.

I'm British but perfectly happy in my adopted country. It honestly wouldn't bother me too much if I couldn't go back, so that's an easy decision.

anotherusernameforthis · 13/05/2024 09:29

Let’s tighten up rules 😊

ONE country of your choosing (birth country/home country/wherever you live the most/have settled). Never be able to leave that country ever again.
OR
Anywhere else on earth, but NEVER be able to return to the one ‘home’ country.

I have made this choice. I currently live in England and have no intention of ever returning to Canada. Canadian citizens require a Canadian passport to enter Canada - rule instituted by Trudeau after I left - and I refuse to be bullied into paying for a second passport.

No loss to me. I prefer it here. I have a better standard of living, much less pollution, and find it easier to travel. I will probably never visit again.

Im British, I live abroad. I only go back to the UK to visit parents, but once theyre gone I wont be travelling back. I love the UK in a "watch Clarkson´s farm and enjoy the beauty of buzzrards, deer and misty bluebell woods" type way. It[s my heritage. But I dont miss it, and won't ever move back.

elQuintoConyo · 13/05/2024 11:40

ooh what happened to my text? lol.

Not a difficult choice for me - I'd leave my home country. I grew up here but ethnically I'm not from here, and I don't feel very strong ties to it. I always find it hard to understand when people go on the run to an extradition-free country but then get caught when they return after decades.

Free healthcare?

SpringBunnies · 13/05/2024 11:50

I'd never go back. I think a lot depends on where your home country is. I only visit because my parents still live there. Once they are gone, I will never visit again. I want them to move here but they don't want to.

Paninaro94 · 13/05/2024 11:51

I was born and raised in the UK but haven’t lived there since my early 20s. I now live in the US and love it here, I would happily never go back to the UK and only do so to visit my dad and have a sausage roll.

It’s an understatement to say the US has its problems but I personally have a much better lifestyle here and have no wish to return to the UK. I lived in other countries in my twenties and thirties and am really happy to be settled here. My kids can’t remember what it was like to live anywhere else and are New Yorkers now.

OmuraWhale · 13/05/2024 11:52

I'd choose to never leave my home country (England). This wouldn't be a difficult decision for me.

SpringBunnies · 13/05/2024 11:53

Oh and I have two other citizenships. One is New Zealand (though it's not what I consider as my home country). I have not step foot there now for over 20 years. I know it's very popular with many people to move there.

The other is actually quite amazing and my kids and DH love visiting. It's very exciting and vibrant, but political situation is very unstable. It's where my family lives. I find it exciting to visit but I don't want to live there anymore.

Puravida23 · 13/05/2024 12:00

I would leave. I have already spent over a decade living overseas in my life. I never missed the UK only my friends and family. The thought of not being able to leave any country ever (not just the UK) would send me insane. I need the option of getting away and experiencing something different even if it is only a couple of weeks a year

madamepresident · 13/05/2024 12:19

I've not been "home" to the UK for almost 6 years now. Can't say I've missed it

mindutopia · 13/05/2024 12:19

I left my home country over a decade ago. I've been back 3 times (2 of those for work). While there are childhood places I'd like to visit just to show my children where I grew up (it was a very different sort of life than they are used to here), I wouldn't otherwise be too sad if I never visited again. I don't miss it one bit.

anotherusernameforthis · 13/05/2024 18:59

Not necessarily your home country (ie country of birth), but the place where you ‘feel’ is home.

It maybe your home/birth country, but it maybe where you have settled as an adult/married/had a family.
@mindutopia @madamepresident - would you leave where you live now, NEVER to return
@Paninaro94 - what about leaving the US forever vs staying in the US forever?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 13/05/2024 19:06

My home country is England and I absolutely love where I live (Devon) which is , IMHO, the best bit of England.
but I would leave, for sure, if I could live all over the world with my current standard of living. Do I get my same income but not have to work?

MrsApplepants · 13/05/2024 19:09

Very happy to stay put here

DrJonesIpresume · 13/05/2024 19:17

I haven't left the British Isles for nearly 30 years, so I guess I might as well stay put now.

Simonjt · 13/05/2024 19:18

I haven’t been to the country I was born in since I was 12, so fine by me.

Norugratsatall · 13/05/2024 19:30

I'd stay put without a doubt!

sashagabadon · 13/05/2024 19:36

I’d stay in England most definitely. It has every type of environment imo apart from desert and jungle so I don’t think I would be bored. Rain is annoying however but I can live with that

Miracleasap · 13/05/2024 19:40

I would do it. Not sure where but I would. The standard of living is always a concern especially in old age. Not that I have any plans to move 🤣

HawkersEast · 13/05/2024 19:43

I'd choose to never return to my home country (I'm kinda in that situation as it is). I love my adopted country

CobraChicken · 13/05/2024 19:47

I'd absolutely choose to stay here in Canada (been here for nearly 2 decades) even if it meant I could never return to the UK. Not dissing the UK at all - I just prefer Canada, if I was forced to choose between them.

Spendonsend · 13/05/2024 19:49

I'd stay in great britain.
Ive been lucky enough to travel when younger.
I like the weather here.

Toooldtoworry · 13/05/2024 19:50

Lived overseas a lot of my life and other countries are not always what they appear, so I vote stay.
