Sorry for typo, title meant to say any not and.

I am hosting a bbq and have 3 vegetarian/2 vegan guests coming.
I would love some ideas of dishes you recommend/would want at a bbq.
please note yes I do have a separate one to cook on for them but also am happy to cook in the oven if needed.
Ive cooked for them before but want something a bit more exciting than veggie sausages!(unless they want them of course).

Paneer and pineapple on skewers. Beats BBQd halloumi hands down.
Lengthwise sliced courgette (not too thick, not too thin) brushed with a mix of oil, lemon and garlic.

Our veggie friends just do veggie burgers when they have a BBQ, but go all out on interesting salads and sides. Lots of Ottolenghi stuff.
I roasted whole cauliflowers in the oven last time they came over, and that went down well.

murasaki · 12/05/2024 23:31

@Simonjt just posted an amazing veggie menu on the small portions thread in aibu.

scrapsontheside · 12/05/2024 23:35

Sainsbury's own brand vegan mayo is tasty and a good price (£1.20 I think) Morrisons one is grim!
Chickpea smush?
Chickpeas mashed with mayo capers, little crisp gherkins salt and loads of pepper.
There lots of versions of chickpea smush sometimes called chickpea choona mayo
Stuffed vine leaves, hummus, lentil hummus, I don't eat Quorn (rank) or the beyond sausages etc (don't like the texture or taste) and ivd never found any vegan chicken style products to taste nice

Miso aubergine oh my god it's so good. Cauliflower. Asparagus.

I love veggie sausages and burgers done on a bbq, a real treat.

Lots of nice slaw and salads and I'd be v happy.

Yeah same here honestly. Richmond veggie sausages are by far the best.

Some halloumi too would be extra nice.

spookehtooth · 12/05/2024 23:39

Avocado can grill quite nice on a BBQ and so can some of the harder fruits apparently, once cut in half, forget exactly what ones saw it ages ago. Can add to a salad.

Marinate the tofu used to make it more interesting

Nothing wrong with "boring"old favourites like corn, which can also have flavouring added like the tofu, and jacket potatoes too for their bulk making them filling.

Bjorkdidit · 13/05/2024 06:44

ASk your vegan and vegetarian guests what they prefer as you can see vegan sausages and burgers vs tofu vs corn and pesto coated baby potatoes is very subjective.

Also don't forget that people who eat meat also like cheese and vegetables and won't appreciate being told they're only allowed meat and can't have any of the 'food for the vegetarians and vegans' so do enough of these for everyone.

Persipan · 13/05/2024 06:49

I make Jamie Oliver chickpea Moroccan flatbreads and cook them on the barbecue.

Islandsmeh · 13/05/2024 06:54

I'd be happy with just the side dishes-salads and bread or something. I'm not a fan of fake meat, but am also totally repulsed by mushrooms - the vegan goto is always a blinking portobello mushroom with many burger type places 😅 , but I also never want to be difficult and am happy to fetch my own food.

ImWearingPantaloons · 13/05/2024 06:57

I made the Bosh courgette kebabs on the weekend and they were lovely.

Slice courgettes (we used mushrooms as well) and marinate them in Harrisa, chilli flakes, cumin and olive oil.

Put onto skewers keeping the slices flat so you put the skewer through 'bottom to top' not through the centre of each disc. That way you get nice griddle lines.

AutumnCrow · 13/05/2024 07:15

Just want to reiterate the above pp who say ‘make too much because the meat eaters will take it too’. Every time.

Heinz Vegan Mayo is relatively expensive but it is very, very good. And dried pasta is vegan, so it can be used to make pasta salads with eg chopped salad vegetables, seasoning and vegan mayo.

Or rice salad is nice at bbqs - cooked rice, vegan mayo, finely chopped onion, peas and sweetcorn, and seasoning. Or rice, onion, cucumber, red pepper and vinaigrette dressing.

Check all bread is vegan.

Have a great day 🙂

Because that's not 'making too much' that's offering a balanced selection to omnivores who eat normal food like cheese and vegetables as well as meat.

I'd be raging if I was told I wasn't allowed a vegetable kebab, some halloumi or pesto baby potatoes and could only have burgers and sausages because I'm not vegetarian.

Edited

Absolutely, as a veggie I always find that the veggie stuff goes too fast as it gets eaten by the meat eaters. And so many meat eaters don't seem to actually like bbq meat snd there's lots leftover. But if you put on a veggie bbq or mainly veggie, everyone is up in arms about not having meat for one meal 🤣

I don't do bbqs for this reason, way too stressful. Jacobs Join is the way to go, people bring what they like to eat and take home the leftovers!

I do veggie skewers, vegan skewers (marinated tofu, peppers etc) and then Tacos, a pot of pulled jackfruit (and also one of pulled pork) with Chipotle seasoning, with guacamole, sour cream, cheese and vegan 'cheese', refried beans etc

Any chance of an in invite to your next one?

User3456 · 13/05/2024 07:58

I am veggie not vegan, really like the beyond meat burgers on a BBQ. Also corn on the cob cooked in foil, halloumi, and Indian snacks (eg samosas, onion bhajis etc) are lovely on a BBQ too. Not a fan of vegetable kebabs but I think lots of people do like them so it's me who is the outlier haha.

Quartz2208 · 13/05/2024 08:11

Definitely don’t forget the vegan mayo - and make sure things are cooked separately as well.

salads can easily be made vegan and veg and let everyone share those

ask as well I like a beyond burger but DD hates them

Devastated999 · 13/05/2024 08:29

Figs are possibly something a veggie/vegan might avoid. Most fig varieties contain the remnants (broken down body)of the wasp that fertilised them. Obviously there’s no animal exploitation there, just nature, but I know a few veggies/vegan and meat eaters too who are a bit hesitant to continue to eat figs.

spookehtooth · 13/05/2024 08:53

One way to balance out access to non-meat is let the veggie and vegans get first dibs. I'm all for sharing .. but surely some consideration??? Given omnivores are already the priority with being provided more food to choose from 🤔🤔 Some people just sound so entitled and uncaring about whether people like me get enough to eat too

familyissues12345 · 13/05/2024 09:11

Personally I'm not a fan of the "fake meat" options, would rather halloumi burgers, kebabs (haven't thought to try tofu, so thanks for that idea PP!)

Lots of salads!

sashh · 13/05/2024 09:47

Vegi kebabs. Mushrooms, peppers, onion, baby corn.

Fruit kebabs.

You can also wrap root veg in foil and put them in the coals so potatoes, beetroot, even carrots. Salad / baby onions can be done on the grill bit.

Corn on the cob.

Aduki bean burgers.

a tin of aduki beans, mash half and leave the others whole, mix together and form in to patties. I'll be honest I've only done these in a frying pan so you might want to put some foil under them.

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 13/05/2024 09:49

large mushrooms and roasted veg
again more than you expect as meat eaters will eat that too

as well as the vege fake meat stuff.

Noshowlomo · 13/05/2024 09:51

Potato salad made with hellmans vegan mayo- better than real mayo. It’s the best

Renamed · 13/05/2024 09:54

I had amazing courgettes at a restaurant last week. They were done whole, rolled in oil salt and za’atar and then I think wrapped in foil and cooked in or over charcoal- maybe suitable for barbecue?

You could just get a disposable BBQ for the veggie stuff. Also, any time I've been at a BBQ the meat eaters also eat the veggie stuff so make sure you do enough for everyone.

Apart from your usual veggie burgers and sausages I've made:

Vegetable kebabs
Corn on the cob
Chicken tikka kebabs using vivera chicken breasts
Portobello mushrooms
Jacket potato
Sweet potato wedges

For some sides: I made a potato salad at the weekend. Boiled baby potatoes skin on, vegan mayo, Dijon mustard, spring onions, chives and black pepper.

Pasta, salad, couscous and savoury rice.

Bjorkdidit · 13/05/2024 09:58

Why are people still pointing out that meat eaters also eat vegetables as if it's a novel idea that the OP maybe unaware of Confused
