Hopelessly out of date re holiday costs?

eggplant16 · 12/05/2024 17:35

2 retired people, we would like a break, perhaps 4 nights in the UK. Nice accomodation, perhaps seaside or market town.
I'm flapping at the cost but I fear I may need to readjust.

How on earth do people afford things?

Thanks

If you suggest a budget you might get some super ideas. You are not tied to school holidays and more people seem to be holidaying abroad so hopefully there will be choices that appeal.

IncognitoUsername · 12/05/2024 17:43

Depends where/when you go, what class of hotel etc etc. Have a good research on Google. There are a lot of good deals out there if you can be flexible.

PhuckyNell · 12/05/2024 17:43

What's your budget

eggplant16 · 12/05/2024 17:44

Okies, Thanks. £600. Is that just stupid?

Perfectly reasonable.

Try Airbnb.

For week stays I use cottages.com but I'm not sure they do less

Whoknowswhatanymore · 12/05/2024 17:46

Not stupid at all. Have you looked at a Forest Holiday where you can go walking? Stay in a lovely lodge, hot tub etc? You’ll easily get that during term time for £600. Even a nice holiday cottage somewhere close to the beach should be in reach for just two of you. Like others have said, you’re not tied to school holidays, which helps a lot. Happy hunting!

ViciousCurrentBun · 12/05/2024 17:47

Out of season if you have a car consider a farmhouse bed and breakfast. My friend lets her house on Airbnb and it’s 700 per week. My retired mates book caravans way in advance and that’s really cheap.,

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 12/05/2024 17:48

Airbnb is crazy now, a simple static caravan for two nights, when you add in service and cleaning charges, could easily eat up your entire budget and more.

Try camping?

Dearover · 12/05/2024 17:49

Classic Cottages. You could get a whole week away outside of school holidays in a lovely property.

cherryassam · 12/05/2024 17:50

Hotels in some areas have got very expensive I’ve found, especially during the summer. I don’t mind paying for a very nice experience, but I don’t appreciate paying £150+ a night for mediocre!

I would echo PPs ideas of looking at AirBnB. Some of the cottage companies do mid-week breaks out of peak time which might suit you. For hotels, if you have an idea of where you’d like I can recommend some.

ViciousCurrentBun · 12/05/2024 17:50

We went to South Wales recently in a camper van, loved it that isn’t cheap but a lovely seaside town is Tenby. Boat trips, lots of places to eat and lovely beaches without having to drive out miles. Are you going by public transport or car?

Tend to stick to N Wales but the speed limit thing is tedious or N Yorkshire.

Willin gto get out of the rut though! Thanks

I have a week in Newcastle in June for 400 pounds from Airbnb.

Planning to swim at tynemouth, do the museums, Alnwick garden etc.

Lovemusic82 · 12/05/2024 17:56

We have never spent more than £500 on a uk holiday (4 nights).

We are off to Tenby in June and it’s cost £160.

If you’re retired and have no dc it’s probably best to go out of the school summer holidays? You can get a much better deal. One year we got a lovely log cabin with hot tub for around £200 in Wales (the week before schools broke up).

Gorgonemilezola · 12/05/2024 17:58

Prices have gone haywire since Covid.

We used The Inn Collection over the winter - they had some excellent DBB deals and have some lovely old coaching inns in the Lakes, Yorkshire, Northumberland. Bit more expensive at this time of year but not stupidly so.

Holiday cottages always seem to be much better price wise if you book for a full week - the 3 or 4 night breaks can be monstrously expensive.

shellyleppard · 12/05/2024 17:59

Have you tried the youth hostel association?? They have some lovely city venues for quite a reasonable price. York, Scarborough and Liverpool are good x

longdistanceclaraclara · 12/05/2024 18:01

£600 out of school holiday isn't impossible but it won't be luxury.

CJ0374 · 12/05/2024 18:04

Look at booking.com to get an idea of options if you have some places in mind. Check reviews on tripadvisor. Quite often, staying a Sun/Mon/Tue night is much cheaper than the weekend. Away from school holiday times, and ideally shoulder season will get better rates. Ringing BnB's directly can get a better rate too. Premier Inns have great beds and if you can cope with no air con, then travelodge might be an option.

I looked back in Mar to go to the Norfolk/Suffolk coast for a few days and was really shocked how prices have jumped since covid. Some Air BNB prices were ridiculous and even static caravan sites were much more than I'd expected.

In North Yorkshire I can help you! ( Not my place, alas, but we go regularly). Depends when you want to go and for how many, but I'll message you. 💕

Think you're right, I am out of date! Plus transport , plus food , plus extras.

How about Cardigan or Aberaeron? That part of Wales is a bit of a hidden gem with beautiful beaches and cheaper accommodation because most people head to Pembrokeshire or N Wales coast.

Also I live in North Wales and have hardly noticed a difference with the 20mph speed limit, it's only through town centres.

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 12/05/2024 18:09

There are literally loads of different accommodation in north yorkshire in June for under your budget.
I honestly can't understand why you are trying to find something

Schmoana · 12/05/2024 18:12

We’ve just had a lovely long weekend at Arvon house in Llandudno. Lovely room and hosts. Around £80 a night. No breakfast option but lots of lovely cafes around to get breakfast and lots to do in Llandudno it’s lovely.
