Hopelessly out of date re holiday costs?

2 retired people, we would like a break, perhaps 4 nights in the UK. Nice accomodation, perhaps seaside or market town.
I'm flapping at the cost but I fear I may need to readjust.

How on earth do people afford things?

Thanks

You could do center parcs or away resorts. Both of those have accommodation under £600 for mon-fri breaks. Center parcs have a promotion with code SAVE50 Save £50 on new bookings between 19th April and 8th July 2024*
when you book by midnight on 21st May

We’ve just had a lovely long weekend at Arvon house in Llandudno. Lovely room and hosts. Around £80 a night. No breakfast option but lots of lovely cafes around to get breakfast and lots to do in Llandudno it’s lovely.

Love Llandudno.

Plenty of options inland though might be tight in more fashionable/genteel beach resorts. Do you drive? If so there's a five star coming up near Wells in Somerset, b&b at £420 and dinner is £20 pppn. It's pretty well located, plenty to see in the area but need transport.

Further north how about Bridlington, again plenty in budget with good reviews and plenty of money spare for evening meals. Another option is to go into your local travel agent and ask what they have available, coop and hays are usually good. They all sell U.K. holidays but at last minute there's really good bargains

We spend about £700-£800 in school holidays for areas such as North Lakes district, Wales, Northumberland. You'll easily find a cottage break for two in term time.

Have a look at Booking.com or Cottages.com for a start.

Look at a serviced apartment so you don't need to eat out all the time to help with the cost.

Booking.com is a good place to look. How about a city, coastal area or countryside area not too far from where you live so travel costs are lower?

We ve booked a cottage near Alnwick with Sykes £550 for the week , just me DH and our spaniel - heaven

Just done a week in Lyme Regis. One bedroom, parking, garden, fabulous sea view, 5 mins walk from the town centre. £425

cottages.com every time

Don't rule out Haven or Park dean type sites. There are a few around Filey etc.

Static caravans can be lovely.

If you do midweek outside of school holidays there are real bargains to be had. You could have several breaks for your budget.

You don't need to pay for use of pool at Haven if you won't use it but can still go in the restaurant etc.

Would you go abroad, you could go to a nice hotel in Prague, Milan or Seville for just under £600 for 2 people with breakfast?

Thanks so much everybody. I think the best idea is self catering, perhaps somewhere new to us.

Just have to make a decision and book something.
