Vinted - rant about cheeky buyers

Theredjellybean · 11/05/2024 17:07

i dont know why i do it to myself
I sold a really nice piece this week - it was a corset style shapewear from company called what Katie Did - they do repro vintage styles.
this was an older style but the new versions on website sell for over £100
as i just wanted a clear out and it was missing the shoulder straps ( is designed to be strapless though) i listed it for....a whole £5 ..yes £5.
got snapped up straight away - i had said it was in good condition but missing straps.
it was clean, no strained seams/suspender clips in place etc
just had comment from buyer ' a bit disappointed , there is a missing hook from first hook and eye fastening and two others look a bit loose and will need re sewing'

FFS you PAID £5 ....

i know , i know..you have to list every tiny flaw but i missed this one.

I wanted to reply saying 'don't be a cheeky f***r' you got an absolute bargin

but i resisted and replied saying it was priced for condition but if happy please return'

but honestly WHO are these people....

sorry typo in my rage...' unhappy please return'

If you didn’t want to let it go for £5 you shouldn’t have priced it higher, that’s not the buyer’s fault. She bought it thinking it was as you described. She might not have the skills, time or money to do repairs on it.

Sorry you are being unreasonable.

(I buy and sell a lot on vinted and am always meticulous describing anything I sell because I know the frustration of having something arrive with unlisted issues)

RoderickHosclassicblackhoodie · 11/05/2024 17:16

I don't think you can really list it as "good" condition if there's bits missing or falling off, sorry.

@EricHebbornInItaly that is a different take on it , i had not considered, but i guess i think the missing hook and eye thing is hardly detrimental to wearing the item and i was very happy to just get a token amount for it.
I think it is cheeky to complain about something you paid so little for when it is such a minor issue..i would have just been very happy with an absolute bargain but them maybe i view it differently

I agree. If you'd been upfront about the flaws that would be different, but you only mentioned the missing straps so I'd be a bit miffed about the other issues too.

Theredjellybean · 11/05/2024 17:20

interesting....it is such a tiny issue and i didn't even notice it when i listed it...so as said if i was the buyer i would have just been pleased with such a bargin and thought nothing much of a problem to have a tiny hook missing but then i am easy going

I had the same, a tiny bit of stitching coming away on an otherwise immaculate coat, new £50, sold for a fiver. I offered her to start a return, said I'd genuinely missed it but that I still felt she'd got a bargain at £5. She didn't return and left positive feedback so assume she was ultimately happy with it

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/05/2024 17:25

but honestly WHO are these people....

People who are pissed off with Vinted sellers not listing flaws.

Theredjellybean · 11/05/2024 17:28

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor ..it is interesting seeing so many people who would be upset about a tiny minor flaw being overlooked on a listing .
I thought most people would good naturedly think ' oh slight tiny issue , hey i paid a fiver for it , no drama'
and i wondered WHO the people were who complained about this..but now i know..it seems majority of mumsnetters would have issue with this.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 11/05/2024 17:29

The fact is, though, you've sold something defective without mentioning it's defective. A minor issue for you, but I'd be annoyed if I'd purchased it with the idea of putting my own straps on it to find the actual hook and eye bits are broken. You say it's a token amount but that buyer has spent £5 on something that they may not have spent at all had you advertised it correctly.

AbbeFausseMaigre · 11/05/2024 17:30

Whether is is a bargain or not despite some minor flaws is completely subjective. You might think it is, but the buyer may well have given it a swerve if she had known about the issues.

I've bought a few things from Vinted that have had minor issues where the seller hadn't mentioned and it's really bloody annoying, irrespective of how much they cost.

mydaughterisademon · 11/05/2024 17:31

She's hardly a cheeky fucker when you didn't list the flaws

Theredjellybean · 11/05/2024 17:32

that is a really good point.
I have offered for her to return it.
question though - would most people not be able to just sew on a new hook and eye ?
I am late 50's and was taught this type of skill at school and taught my dds ..but maybe again i over estimate ..

OP posts:
SeanMean · 11/05/2024 17:33

You should list the flaws, then it’s obvious why it’s priced at a low point.

SummertimeSol · 11/05/2024 17:34

It's not just a fiver for the buyer though. It's nearer £10 once the buyer's fee and postage costs are paid.

Now she'll need to sort a repair which she may not be able to do herself, so that may cost too.

Add all that up and it's not so much of a bargain. A tenner is a lot of money to many people.

It's really important to show all defects in photos so buyers know exactly what they're buying.

SeanMean · 11/05/2024 17:35

I would definitely not sew a hook and eye!!!!

Surprising that you think people would. I’m 47 by the way so a similar age.

Kids haven't been taught sewing at school for decades. But even so, that might well be acceptable to someone IF they'd been told in advance.

So your buyer is cheap and thick and should be grateful?

I’m not sure that vinted is for you.

Beatrixslobber · 11/05/2024 17:38

Fwiw I would be able to fix it but I would be a bit cross that I had to.

Your trash isn’t treasure.

It's more like £8 with insurance and postage and I don't want to be grateful for something 'cheap,'I want to buy something that's been listed correctly stating all the flaws then I can make a proper decision on wether to purchase.

Plus the cost of the hooks and eyes… it becomes quite expensive to repair things if you don’t keep an extensive sewing kit, even if you have the skills. I actually have hooks and eyes, 49 of them… because I needed one set and had to buy 50 😂

ComfyButFrumpy · 11/05/2024 17:52

Another take on this is you check over the item very carefully. Mend all these minor flaws, then sell it for much more.
I'd rather pay more for something in good condition, than less for something disappointing.

pyjamalife · 11/05/2024 17:56

I could repair it but would be pissed off having received it.

You keep saying how much of a bargain it is, but maybe the buyer isn't as obsessed with the brand as you, so maybe they just saw a top they liked for a fiver, which they found reasonable, and then received something damaged which wasn't listed.

The buyer isn't in the wrong, here

CeeceeBloomingdale · 11/05/2024 18:04

It's you not them . I'm sick of sellers listing without describing the item properly. You say it's only £5 but they will have spent another £5 on buyer protection (interestingly there is none) and postage. You then offer them the opportunity to return it at their own expense to get £5 back. That'll probably be another £5 So effectively they've paid £10 for nothing but inconvenience and Vinted will do nothing to protect the buyer. They same happened to me recently with a scarf full of moth holes and a blazer where the sleeves had been shortened, buttons removed and wasn't mentioned. The seller gave me 1* feedback for THEIR error. I can sew but the time it took was about 2 hours to get it wearable and luckily I had the materials in already. If I needed to take it to a tailor that would have cost me a lot more. I know it's not worth sending something low value back but I will always complain to sellers to let them them know "I see you"

Grumplechops · 11/05/2024 18:07

I also don’t think that your buyer is cheeky. The buyer could quite easily think you’ve been cheeky as they bought something in good faith where you’d marked the item as ‘good’ condition and listed one flaw but not all the flaws. Whether £5 is a paltry amount and you should be happy for what you get, or something you’d expect to get the item as described is wholly subjective.
