Vinted - rant about cheeky buyers

i dont know why i do it to myself
I sold a really nice piece this week - it was a corset style shapewear from company called what Katie Did - they do repro vintage styles.
this was an older style but the new versions on website sell for over £100
as i just wanted a clear out and it was missing the shoulder straps ( is designed to be strapless though) i listed it for....a whole £5 ..yes £5.
got snapped up straight away - i had said it was in good condition but missing straps.
it was clean, no strained seams/suspender clips in place etc
just had comment from buyer ' a bit disappointed , there is a missing hook from first hook and eye fastening and two others look a bit loose and will need re sewing'

FFS you PAID £5 ....

i know , i know..you have to list every tiny flaw but i missed this one.

I wanted to reply saying 'don't be a cheeky f***r' you got an absolute bargin

but i resisted and replied saying it was priced for condition but if happy please return'

but honestly WHO are these people....

I agree, a minor flaw is a major flaw if you don't have the skills to do the repair.

I have refunded a buyer and bank transferred her the postage because the item had been professionally altered but consequently didn't fit her.

Items should be exactly as described.

It's not just a fiver for the buyer though. It's nearer £10 once the buyer's fee and postage costs are paid.

Now she'll need to sort a repair which she may not be able to do herself, so that may cost too.

Add all that up and it's not so much of a bargain. A tenner is a lot of money to many people.

It's really important to show all defects in photos so buyers know exactly what they're buying.

I agree, the cost to the buyer is much more. She may not think it's worth £10 with multiple minor defects.

evybevy · 11/05/2024 19:23

Your error. Your perspective is off. You should just let her keep it for free. (To use your own words, it is ONLY £5)

I'd be a bit miffed if I had to repair an item listed as "good". I CAN repair if needed, but doesn't mean I want to. She's not lied in her comment. Yes, it's just a fiver, but the item isn't as described-why should she say it is?

EricHebbornInItaly · 11/05/2024 20:22

Yes and to add to that, as the mistake was yours, you need to cover the return postage so the buyer isn’t out more money. You really can’t seem to listen to what people are telling you that misrepresentation when selling goods isn’t acceptable.

Overthebow · 11/05/2024 20:22

Theredjellybean · 11/05/2024 17:32

that is a really good point.
I have offered for her to return it.
question though - would most people not be able to just sew on a new hook and eye ?
I am late 50's and was taught this type of skill at school and taught my dds ..but maybe again i over estimate ..

I can’t do that, I wasn’t taught to sew at school or at home. Would be a bit annoyed if I’d bought this as I don’t buy things that need repairs because I can’t repair them. I would have wasted my money. £5 is a lot to some people.

I have 3 kids and a full time job. I don’t want to waste the small amount of ‘free time’ I have sewing!

I would expect something in good condition to be like new… im
amazed at the state of some of the things people list as good condition apart from and then it will have rip or stain on it!

PrimalLass · 11/05/2024 21:31

SeanMean · 11/05/2024 17:35

I would definitely not sew a hook and eye!!!!

Surprising that you think people would. I’m 47 by the way so a similar age.

How on earth not?

Amx · 11/05/2024 21:33

Where would you buy a hook and eye to replace the missing one?

TeenLifeMum · 11/05/2024 21:37

Missing hook is pretty significant. Surely it won’t do up properly if a hook is missing? Even if I’m paying £5, I’m buying clothing to wear not a sewing project!

I can sew but I have 3dc, full time job and I’m studying for my masters. This thread puts me off vinted.

SeanMean · 11/05/2024 22:10

@PrimalLass
Because I can’t sew and have no interest in learning.

PrimalLass · 11/05/2024 22:19

It's would require around three stitches round the hook and take a minute.

Good condition on Vinted means there may be imperfections.

EricHebbornInItaly · 11/05/2024 22:22

Yes exactly to what previous posters have said. Even if the person wanted to fix it, it’s an additional cost, there are very few haberdasheries about anymore, buying online unless you have prime has postage costs, in store incurs parking costs, she might not own thread in the right colour so another extra.

I’m reasonable at sewing but I don’t have the time to piss about doing it anymore, I’m barely keeping my head above water with full time work/commute/baby/disability etc.

At the end of the day you are selling goods. The app has clear guidelines of what each of their descriptions means and you must clearly describe and photograph faults.

You are entirely in the wrong, people like you make the buying experience a nightmare and cost people money in returns etc. You really must pay for the return label too.

Good grief. Sellers like this wind me up.

I wouldn’t know where even buy a hook to put it in, let alone know how to sew it. And yes it. Oils still be listed as good condition but the imperfections should be detailed and photos of it included.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 11/05/2024 22:26

It’s not so much the price it’s the disappointment.
Buyer has agreed to pay the asking price + Vinted fee + postage and expects to receive the item described. Possibly thinks they’re going to wear it strapless anyway. Then receives an item that has something else missing and something loose. Buyer isn’t thinking oh well it was only £5 plus about £3-£4, they’re thinking I’ve got to work out how to repair this before I can wear it. They’re disappointed.

EricHebbornInItaly · 11/05/2024 22:27

@PrimalLass yes but you when you took a screenshot of the description you failed to scroll down and screenshot the next paragraph which states you must describe and photograph any flaws.

I sold over £1000 of Lego for £30. Accidentally uploaded the wrong photo which contained some pieces DD was considering selling. Got a message with a cropped photo 'this wasn't in the box'. They got two large boxes took two bin bags to cover the boxes for transport! For 30 quid. Apologies for one wrong photo but jeez look what you got! Stop moaning!

EricHebbornInItaly · 11/05/2024 22:30

@coronafiona again not the buyers fault. Get the seller to return and relist at a higher price if you think it’s worth more.

I didn't fail to do anything. That's not on the page I screenshot.

PrimalLass · 11/05/2024 23:00

I'd be more cross that everything I buy seems to come drenched in Febreeze. But I just wash them rather than complain.

onemorerose · 11/05/2024 23:38

To be fair to Vinted I recently received an item with burn holes in it and stank. I’d paid nearly 50 quid for it and the burn holes weren’t on the listing. I did get refunded the total amount including the payment for posting it back. Wasn’t out of pocket but was disappointed and had to use my own time to return it.

AliceCallous · 11/05/2024 23:41

You were in the wrong. The price is irrelevant. You didn't sell them what they thought they were buying.
