Any tips on effectively getting the stale sweat smell out of clothes? Normal laundry detergent doesn't seem to do it!

Dettol laundry wash cleanser to do an initial re-set.
Then spray white vinegar onto armpits of tops before washing.
You can also use white vinegar as a fabric softener if you want to.

You can buy 5L bottles of spirit vinegar from Amazon and cash & carries etc.

Just to add, I don't like to use Dettol LWC all the time, as it's probably quite chemical-y.

Capful of Zoflora in the conditioner drawer

Halo sports wash but it's expensive £10 a liter on Amazon.

Alternatively, the workout gear in a mix of one part distilled white vinegar to four parts cold water for a few hours. Then wring out the water and bung them in a wash.

Vinegar spray in the cleaning section from b&m or home bargains. Spray directly onto armpits, leave for however long you want even 5/10 minutes is enough and then put into wash as normal.

Works like a charm and no more sweat smells. I had a major problem with this until someone said vinegar spray, the clothes do not smell like the spray after or anything just normal washing powder

whatisontk · 11/05/2024 07:23

Vinegar spray is £1 and works perfectly

leafybrew · 11/05/2024 07:24

Use Dettol laundry sanitiser in the fabric conditioner drawer - it really does work

Blueberry40 · 11/05/2024 07:25

Yes, I have two sons so have had to find a solution to this but it’s taken a while…just use a scoop of the pink oxy action or vanish stain remover powder (in the big tubs) in the drawer as well as your usual laundry powder/gel. This works amazingly well, I wish I had discovered it years ago!

MN hack I learnt, to rub Fairy anti-bacterial washing-up liquid into the armpits and leave for 20mins before washing. Works a treat.

While effective, white vinegar is bad for the washing mashing door seals

Put vinegar onto the area before washing.

While effective, white vinegar is bad for the washing mashing door seals Not in small amounts applied to clothes, it's too diluted by the time the machine is swilling to have an impact.

Elebag · 11/05/2024 07:39

Wash inside out and line dry outside, in the sun if possible.

amiahoarder · 11/05/2024 07:44

For bad sweat/deodorant stains, I scrub with laundry soap then rinse, then soak in vinegar solution, repeat if needed.

This

It's excellent

Theothername · 11/05/2024 07:47

Synthetic sports fabrics that wick sweat away from the body are the worst for this.

Tristar15 · 11/05/2024 07:53

I soak in very hot water with lots of detergent before washing. Has worked for me.

C1N1C · 11/05/2024 08:05

Sweat = bacteria. So what I do is spray or dab alcohol under arms before times I know I'm going to sweat (gym). Just a quick squirt of hand sanitiser is enough!

GlumBear · 11/05/2024 08:09

Napisan! Used to use the Dettol wash but much prefer napisan

Ilovegoldies · 11/05/2024 08:11

I've seen dancers spray the pits of costumes with vodka!
I just use washing powder as opposed to liquid..

dementedpixie · 11/05/2024 08:52

I spray Dr beckmann sweat and stain remover on the armpits of clothes before washing and use laundry sanitiser instead of fabric softener

Heliss · 11/05/2024 09:20

I use the spray Vanish - spray on armpits of clothes then bung them in the wash.

I have noticed though that if I then line dry them in bright sunshine the sprayed areas turn a bit yellow if they are light coloured clothes.
