Just that really dh had whooping cough as a child.

I don't know if I had the vaccine but I'm assuming dh didn't?

I think older dc just had it (still had cough now doc completely dismissed possibility of it but all other places saying symptoms match.)
Younger dc obviously exposed and had a cough but not as bad

we vaccinate mothers as the immunity passes to the babies to protect them until their 8 week vaccines. When I first began nursing I looked after many babies with whooping cough and some were very very poorly and some did not make it. But since the introduction of vaccination for pregnant mothers, I can’t remember the last baby with pertussis I cared for - thank goodness too!! I’m not sure that vaccinating fathers would make much difference.

I’ll never forget the feeling of dread hearing that whoop when caring for a baby, it’s a horrible horrible illness

I meant, why don’t we then vaccinate other adults too? Especially the dads of newborns? Does anyone know?!

Presumably because the unborn baby gets enough immunity from the vaccination of the pregnant woman until they get the vaccination at 8 weeks. No need to vaccinate dads or other adults as there's no real benefit. Whooping cough vaccination isn't offered to adults as it's generally not dangerous or life threatening for adults - just very unpleasant

I was born 1975 and didn't get the jab because apparently there was some sort of scare over it (so my mum says).
When I was 6 I caught it so I assume a lot of kids my age didn't get the jab.

Exactly the same here. I didn’t have it because of whatever scare there was at the time and had it badly as a child. I don’t know if that confers immunity or not

I read that three of the mothers of the five babies who sadly died, were vaccinated, and yet this wasn’t enough to protect the babies. So I suppose my thinking is that by vaccinating the fathers too it might reduce possible transmission risk even more? Maybe. It’s all so sad 😞

I wasn't vaccinated - my mum declined it as there was a scare at this time. I caught it as a preschooler in the mid-80s.

@nocoolnamesleft

How on Earth did you manage to get that checked?

One of the hospitals I worked at, the occupational health department decided I didn't have sufficiently reliable evidence that I'd been immunised, so they wanted to check immunity. Looks bad if the staff go down with immunisable diseases, especially if they could pass it on to their vulnerable patients.

I had whooping cough in the 80s. My mum wasn't allowed to get her two eldest vaccinated because she has epilepsy (the science changed on that by the time she had my younger siblings). I remember being very, very ill and the sensation of not being able to catch my breath. It was horrible.

ah maybe I need a job in the hospital then 🤪

I'm going to be working with babies/toddlers again, I wonder if I can book it & pay for it without the absolute farce of going through my go surgery?

we've just had an email through, basically saying they're not seeing anyone!

if you have xyz - blah blah
if you have abc - see the pharmacist
if you have def- see the vet

only go to A&E if your leg has fallen off

use the online booking form if you enjoy merry go rounds.

our GP's are not seeing patients.

(we seem to be imposing them!

IamSlave · 12/05/2024 07:26

Im wondering why GPS have been dismissing it.

Should I change my gp
