Just that really dh had whooping cough as a child.

I don't know if I had the vaccine but I'm assuming dh didn't?

I think older dc just had it (still had cough now doc completely dismissed possibility of it but all other places saying symptoms match.)
Younger dc obviously exposed and had a cough but not as bad

Ask your GP for all your vaccine records. I had WC in the 80s. My kids have been vaccinated.

IamSlave · 10/05/2024 22:40

@MonsterMunched

Yes a few years ago I did, when I had a new born and measles was rife. Unfortunately they didn't seem to have my records so I had one mmr jab again.

Hence asking.

Irrelevant really because the effect wears off .

No, not vaccinated and had whooping cough in the winter of 1983. My mum would certainly have had me vaccinated with anything on offer as she was that type, so I assume I was never offered it.

BrownSauceOnBeans · 10/05/2024 22:49

I had WC in 1981.
the vaccine is combined with tetanus now I think, so I had a dose when I cut my hand four years ago.

Needmorelego · 10/05/2024 22:51

I was born 1975 and didn't get the jab because apparently there was some sort of scare over it (so my mum says).
When I was 6 I caught it so I assume a lot of kids my age didn't get the jab.

Cyclingforcake · 10/05/2024 22:51

I pretty certain I had the WC vaccine and I was born in 1977. Then there was a big concern about it but I can’t remember what it was. My DM didn’t get my brother vaccinated in 1977 as she believed the scaremongering at the time. He then got WC and nearly died - we had every vaccine going after that. I don’t where my record are though. I presume it would be on my GP record somewhere.

Cyclingforcake · 10/05/2024 22:52

Sorry I was born in 1975. My DB was born in 1977 so between us there was some scare.

Geris · 10/05/2024 22:52

I read today it wears off after about ten years.

Why don't we vaccinate adults now? Especially the dads of newborns?

DramaAlpaca · 10/05/2024 22:52

I have my vaccination record from the 60s and I had the whooping cough vaccine, combined with tetanus and diphtheria.

Needmorelego · 10/05/2024 22:53

@Cyclingforcake I'm curious now what that scare was for us 75 lot 🤔

Good point, my childhood vaccine records don't exist any longer and this is the NIH (gov.uk) position anyway:

The mechanism of immunity to pertussis after natural infection or immunization is complex and not fully understood. Immunity has been shown to wane seven to 20 years after natural infection and five to 10 years after immunization with whole cell vaccines

I’m a 1971 baby and I had my vaccine. I’ve got the little slips from each of my childhood jabs. My mum is a brilliant keeper of useful things.

OneHeartySnail · 10/05/2024 22:54

1972 baby, was vaccinated for WC

PleaseletitbeSpring · 10/05/2024 22:55

My DC had theirs. 70s and 80s. DD had a lot of allergies so the doctor gave her the vaccine in half doses spread out over a few weeks.

Cyclingforcake · 10/05/2024 22:56

@Needmorelego I know! I’ll ask my DM. But I’m glad that it wasn’t just me misremembering a story. Did you grow up in Cornwall? I wonder if it was quite localised.

RobinHumphries · 10/05/2024 22:56

No. There was some sort of scare at the time - I don’t know what I pre date MMR, my mum asked the advice of the doctor and as a result I didn’t get any of my childhood vaccinations. I’m not sure why not - she’s not anti-vax. Luckily for me I was a fairly healthy child although did get measles.

nocoolnamesleft · 10/05/2024 22:57

My parents were thankfully very pro vaccine. I had the whooping cough vaccine in the early seventies, and then still showed immunity when checked about 15 years ago.

Needmorelego · 10/05/2024 22:57

@Cyclingforcake no we were in Essex then - so not even close 😂

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 10/05/2024 22:58

The vaccine doesn’t last. I’m a ‘75 baby - had the vaccine but caught whooping cough just after Christmas. Still coughing daily. It’s so grim. The damage that has been done by the scaremongering of anti vaxxers makes me so mad 🤬. Those poor babies 😢

Floralnomad · 10/05/2024 22:59

If you have Patient Access your vaccination record is on there , mine goes right back to when I was 2 in the late 60s

RobinHumphries · 10/05/2024 22:59

Oh to join the ‘scare’ group (I was busy looking up my childhood records) I’m Midlands (Derby) and 1978.

IamSlave · 10/05/2024 22:59

Mines dead a long time. So I can't ask

Did you have eczema? It was contraindicated at the time apparently.

Cyclingforcake · 10/05/2024 23:00

I’ve just googled. Apparently there were concerns it could cause brain damage which surfaced in the mid 70s. But a big epidemic in 1978/9 which resulted in a lot of children dying changed perceptions so take up of the vaccine improved.
From what I can gather the vaccine wearing off isn’t a big problem because it’s only usually dangerous for tiny babies. But they give us lots of doses to maintain herd immunity.
