Looking for sympathy - sacked by text

Wtfamigoingtodonow · 10/05/2024 17:36

I'm just looking for some sympathy and to vent because I am too ashamed and embarrassed to talk to anyone in real life.

I started a new job on Tuesday (because of the bank holiday), Wednesday was my regular day off and then worked Thursday. I wasn't aware of any issues,I was given an entry fob as I was leaving, but at 17:30 I received a text saying they "no longer needed my services" and I will be paid for the hours I have worked. I mean WTF?

I have spent the day applying for jobs...again and applied for Job Seekers Allowance.

My husband wants me to ask why, but I'd rather chop my own arm off.

Oh and would I be really petty to post the fob back in an envelope without a stamp? I won't be passing the office anytime soon.

I just want dome sympathy to be honest.

Ouch, that’s unpleasant. You don’t want to work for people like that. It can only get worse. Take if from a person who has stayed in crappy jobs way too long in the hope it’ll “turn a corner” - it rarely does.

You could text back and ask them to mail you a postage-paid envelope so you can return the fob.

Their loss OP. Their loss.

sodabreadjam · 10/05/2024 17:43

You definitely got mixed messages - giving you a key fob and then sacking you shortly afterwards. Sounds like the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing.

I would be tempted to ask for some feedback if you have no idea why they decided to fire you. Is it possible the sacking message was meant for someone else?

Gettingbysomehow · 10/05/2024 17:45

How awful OP that has happened to me in the past and it really does make you feel horrible.
I do have a history of doing very good work and being great at my job so they were two isolated incidents in a place that made me feel uncomfortable and was very cliquey.
I'd say this job was the same for you, your face simply didn't fit from day one and if you hadn't got the sack I doubt you would have been happy there at all.
I think this will be for the best and you'll find somewhere where you will fit in and be happy.

Wtfamigoingtodonow · 10/05/2024 17:45

I think in the long run it will be a good thing, but right now I am smarting...

Definitely mixed messages.

No, the text addressed me by name so definately meant for me.

Ah well, you wouldn't want to work for a company that is so disorganised and treats people so badly. They hardly gave you a chance.

Hope you find somewhere much better so that you can look back and be glad you dodged a bullet.

The thing is, I said in the interview, I didn't think I was the right candidate for the job because, the hours weren't specified on the advert and they wanted someone to work 13:00 - 17:30, which I cannot do because of lack of childcare. The owner of the company then asked me what my ideal hours were, I told him and he said that's fine, we really want you on the team so we'll make it work. Surely if they regretted making the offer, they could have spoken to me.

I know you're right but I am still very upset by it all.

I have mowed the lawn today in between job applications and spent my time thinking up "big mistake, huge" moments in my head!

If it makes you feel any better i once got sacked from a job id only been their 4 weeks why because i was quiet yes i was to quiet.
It pissed me off a bit but meh I got a new job a month later working at asda to push me over.
Now been in my current job for 7 years.
Have walked out of a few jobs as well like up and walked out never went back no notice handed in every one blocked.

Lorelaigilmore88 · 10/05/2024 17:59

I know this sounds trite, but you really don't want to work for an organisation that dismisses people via text. If that's their level of professionalism I imagine they would be a bloody nightmare to work for. Hopefully in a few days you will feel better.

Standingupstandingout · 10/05/2024 18:19

I think you'll only feel worse if you don't ask why. You'll wonder and it'll impact on your confidence looking for other stuff - it would for me anyway.

the80sweregreat · 10/05/2024 18:25

I'm sorry op, really poor communication there and I can understand why you feel rotten
Hope you find another job soon somewhere better

sodabreadjam · 10/05/2024 18:28

Thinking about what you said about the hours - I think they were so desperate to get someone started, they took you on even though you couldn't do the hours they wanted.

In the meantime they have interviewed someone who is able and willing to work those hours and they were just waiting on that person accepting. It is likely you didn't do anything wrong at all.

I think that may be the case, but honestly, what a bunch of arseholes!

Still, onwards and upwards!

Make sure they pay your notice not just hours worked - check your contract it's probably 1 week

KnickerlessParsons · 10/05/2024 18:49

I wouldn't worry about the fob. They'll disable it anyway.

I know, it's more about them having to trek to the sorting office and pay the postage on it that makes me want to do it. 😁

ClimbingMounjaro · 10/05/2024 19:05

I'd put the fob in the bin and move on. Same amount of respect they've shown to you

2024istheyearforme · 10/05/2024 20:25

i was once fired from a zoo ... for being too interested in the animals :D Yes.. i was an animal lover and got fired for it

SoupChicken · 10/05/2024 20:56

Wow, I’m petty so I’d be tempted to pretend I’d lost my phone and turn up for the next shift so they had to say it to my face (and pay me for the shift).

You have my sympathy, it’s really really shitty behaviour but it’s obviously not anything you’ve done because if you’d done something wrong they would’ve told you and given you a chance to do it right first.

I’ve long thought you should have to have a licence or qualification before you’re allowed to employ people, there’s too many arseholes around.

Citrusandginger · 10/05/2024 21:05

I think I would frame it as the company changed their mind/ran out of money rather than you have been sacked.

It's not you. It's them.

And I'd let them whistle for their fob unless less provide a stamped addressed envelope. I hope your next job is a real one.

Theblessedchild · 10/05/2024 21:35

Wow, this is why I stayed far too long with employers I couldn't stand because I had job security in the knowledge they couldn't do this kind of thing.

Imagine leaving a long standing employment for a new job and they did this. Leaving you high and dry, absolutey disgraceful. The law should be changed to stop employers treating people this way.

I'm so sorry this happened to you.

As a side note, lots of the things you said sound familiar and I started a new job in December, would you mind sharing the job role this was for? I really hope I'm not working for the same people.

Yeah do it, put it in a large fucking box too 😄

NotJohnMajor · 10/05/2024 21:52

Definitely think this will be about the hours, not your performance. Probably too embarrassed to tell you in person after the 'we really want you on the team' spiel.

Wtfamigoingtodonow · 10/05/2024 22:00

@Theblessedchild it was just an admin job so the job title was business administrator.
