Slang words you hate!

Around my way people sometimes say "scran" meaning food. "Great scran here" "let's get some scran first".

I hate it. No idea why but the word goes through me.

Also hate when people say "ickle" and holibobs

Projectile vomiting

Can't you just think they've been sick - really don't like it

keffie12 · 08/05/2024 22:56

Say not think above

Rollercoaster1920 · 08/05/2024 23:01

Wait, What?

I will not be waiting for you to learn to listen properly by engaging your brain to actually process the sounds that enter your ear.
The false surprise combined with ignorance and demand riles me.

Say Wot again and the WiFi gets unplugged.

I'm totally with you regarding the word scran. It's always given me the rage! Also when people say 'digs' about somewhere they are staying. Why?? Where do these stupid words even come from?!! I hate it so much!!!

Hate this. It hardly ever is true projectile vomiting. All vomiting is, by its nature, somewhat projectile but people love throwing medical terms around.
I also hate "educated guess" when the person knows nothing about the subject and isn't using any knowledge to try and work out an answer. There's nothing "educated" about - it's just a bloody guess.

Lots of the words already mentioned plus Chrimbo and (more recently) kiddo, doggo and pupper.

Scran is a navy word (or "jackspeak"), it originates from the name of their rations. I grew up in a navy house, so it's the norm for me, along with lots of other words that would seem odd to non military brats, but also lots of non navy folk in dock/port areas say "scran" too- I guess it sort of seeps in to the local dialects.

Moreish
Kiddy

Where I grew up nosh meant bj and when I moved and started hearing it used for food I found it hilarious. I would casually drop it into conversations just to amuse myself 😂

LaMarschallin · 08/05/2024 23:28

I only discovered the double meaning of "nosh" (it just meant food afaik) when I read the rant Giles Coren sent the sub-editors on a restaurant review in the Times.
Basically they'd spoiled his very witty not wordplay on the double meaning of "nosh".

I love these threads. Everyone ends up hating everything.

That said, I'd just like to throw 'crimbo' into the mix.

LifeofBrienne · 09/05/2024 09:49

Fam. Ok, no one I know says fam, but one of the ads on MN is urging me to take my ‘fam’ on a cruise and I was wondering if anyone (apart from Jodie Whitaker in Doctor Who) says it in real life?
Mind you, no one I know says nosh or hubby or hollibobs or anything like that either. Kids say ‘bruh’ a lot but I don’t mind that.

Or, even worse, 'fam-a-lam'
