Slang words you hate!

widgitfidgit · 08/05/2024 18:47

Around my way people sometimes say "scran" meaning food. "Great scran here" "let's get some scran first".

I hate it. No idea why but the word goes through me.

Also hate when people say "ickle" and holibobs

widgitfidgit · 08/05/2024 21:44

Oh I have another. When people was to sound posh and instead of saying "restaurant" they pronounce it the French way, Just bugs the life out of me

Totes instead of totally.
Snackette.
Cheeky as in 'a cheeky Nando's'.
Numpty - I just don't like it.
Xtra

I say Golly gosh all the time! 😩

Also, we need to be careful, OP, as many words are not 'slang ' but specific dialect. I'm very proud of speaking Scots, & don't like it being referred to as 'slang': we should be proud of our many, individual dialects in the UK.

I see dialect as something different. To me saying like "back of ten" and barm/bap/bun are dialects

Words like scran, pit, holibobs and so on are just slang. And they are annoying

I don't think anyone is taking that away from you and I did say upthread that I wasn't sure 'the back of' constitutes slang. But there is also crossover and slang within dialects. For example, 'Chip butty' might be considered slang and belonging to a regional dialect.
@butelass has a different understanding of 'the back of' to you which has been my experience working in different parts of Scotland and finding it so confusing because it can mean different things.

IamaRevenant · 08/05/2024 21:51

Why all the hatred for lush?? I'm assuming none of you are from Bristol!

On the subject of Bristol, calling it 'Brizzle' is unacceptable even for people born and bred here, much less anyone else.

A bap is just a particular type of round, soft bread roll. What other regions might call a burger bun. That's not slang, it's well known that bread rolls have about a dozen regional names across the UK.

For all those who've mentioned this one, I see your 'hubby' and raise you 'hubster'.

Cossie livs was (I'm fairly sure) only ever said seriously once in some crap reality tv show (maybe TOWIE?) and was so ridiculous that it's now used as a joke. At least, I hope that's the case...

HappierTimesAhead · 08/05/2024 21:54

See @widgitfidgit I would consider Scran to be a Scottish word and not slang! I maintain there is a distinct crossover between slang and dialect!

counding · 08/05/2024 21:54

Lush
Vile
Vom
Hub
Hubby
Bubs

I love scran though

oneleggedspider · 08/05/2024 21:55

Scrummy, nom nom, gobble. 😖

lljkk · 08/05/2024 21:55

"Core" for abdomen. Abdomen is a thing. Whereas Apples have cores.
"Triggering" for upsetting. No guns involved.

HappierTimesAhead · 08/05/2024 21:55

'Spenny' for expensive

Oh I've never heard that one.

It's often used by influencers on Instagram 'it's quite Spenny hun'

Oh I inadvertently used another horrible slang word!

JanglingJack · 08/05/2024 22:05

We've always said - feeling a bit peckish, that's not slang us it? (Probably!).

Elevenses isn't slang.

I do say lush, but I don't have an orange face or pouty lips. I described Zopiclone as lush on a thread earlier, because it is. Especially when you nod off with a smile on your face.

Churchview · 08/05/2024 22:05

Having a 'swill' meaning having a quick wash.

Grim!

JanglingJack · 08/05/2024 22:06

Kids is slang.

People should just say children. Won't please think of the children!

Not that kids bothers me.

whatdoiwantformybirthdayson · 08/05/2024 22:08

Fanny. Hate it.

delilabell · 08/05/2024 22:08

Or ‘in my scratcher’ . Why? How unclean are you ?

I also hate Lush, NomNom, Picky Bits, Brew, Cuppa and Hubby. And a whole lot of other words that I can’t think of right now.

Basically, it I don’t use it, it’s wrong.

100% 😁

MoonWoman69 · 08/05/2024 22:27

I hate the word belly, I know it isn't slang as such, I just think it's awful!
And people saying 'like' and 'you know' after every other word! String a fucking sentence together! It makes me want to scream!
Hubster is another one... Ick!
I love scran, although I don't use it, but I've always assumed it was a Yorkshire word?

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/05/2024 22:34

I hate hubby, hubster, holibobs, crotch goblins, preggers. To name a few.

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/05/2024 22:34

Nom nom. Stop it.

VerityUnreasonble · 08/05/2024 22:53

ditalini · 08/05/2024 19:07

Nosh
Nom
Naff

Nosh was always used to mean blowjob when I was teenager. It always felt very uncomfortable / odd hearing it being used to mean food.
