Toddler group snacks

I help out at a toddler group and am in charge of snacks, but am getting a bit bored with our usual choices and looking for inspiration.

What snacks go down well at any toddler groups you attend?

Honestly, just toast!

WibbleWob · 08/05/2024 17:55

Crumpets, water melon, buttered crackers, cashews (but tricky with allergies) celery, yellow and red pepper, cheese?

CadyEastman · 08/05/2024 17:56

It's been a while since I went to playgroups but the ones I went to only ever served biscuits

Crumpets, finger sandwiches, fruit salad always went down a storm. Toast was very popular too

Saz12 · 08/05/2024 18:58

Oatcakes, cucumber sticks, soft cheese, hummus?

longdistanceclaraclara · 08/05/2024 19:01

Custard creams and bourbons.

elliejjtiny · 08/05/2024 19:01

The one I went to did toast or fruit, on alternate weeks.

Cuppateatea · 08/05/2024 19:07

Bread sticks and cheese straws. Chopped up fruit like banana.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 08/05/2024 19:07

If home made is allowed then cheese biscuits always go down well here.

feelinhopeful · 08/05/2024 19:09

Breadsticks, rice cakes, cubes of cheese.

Fruit isn't ideal for snacks as it is high in sugar, it's better as part of a meal (child with huge dental problems so speaking from bitter experience!)

DuploTrain · 08/05/2024 19:10

The one I go to just has the same snacks every week (bananas, raisins, brioche, bread, biscuits, cheese).

I like that they have the same snacks every time personally. I know what DS is going to have there so I don’t give him the same thing before we go.

TribeofFfive · 08/05/2024 19:13

Raisins, cucumber sticks, celery & pepper sticks, bagels / crumpets / toast, pom bears / wotsits

WittiestUsernameEver · 08/05/2024 19:14

Just stick to biscuits. Custard creams, bourbons, rich tea etc all cheap and cheerful, easily stored and No prep.

No need for anything else.

treacledan71 · 08/05/2024 19:16

Dry Cheerios.

WafflingDreamer · 08/05/2024 19:17

I go to an amazing toddler group where each week has a theme and the snack is based around that. Sometimes it'll be toast cut into a shape, a cookie cut into a specific shape, for fireworks night they had breadsticks dipped in chocolate and added their own sprinkles, one week the theme was trees and they'd made green rice Crispy cakes and stuck them on top of breadsticks 🤣 It's so much fun

Pixie2015 · 08/05/2024 19:18

Cheese on toast was always a big win

Favouritefruits · 08/05/2024 19:20

Fruit kababs
crudités
dried apricots
smoothies

honestly if I turned up to a toddler group and they gave out biscuits or toast I wouldn’t go again. The leaders should be red hot on nutrition and give out appropriate snacks. SOME kids get lots of carbs at home as parents don’t understand nutrition so I’d expect a place like a toddler group to lead by example.

agncndmkd128494 · 08/05/2024 19:20

Mini breadsticks with cubes of cheese and hummus for dipping were always a winner when mine were toddlers

CountingCrones · 08/05/2024 19:21

Pink wafer biscuits (are they ever served anywhere except toddler groups?) and toast triangles.

Nothing easy to smush into things (side-eye to cut up banana chunks) and nothing too juicy to get all over the toys (grumpy look at watermelon wedges)

As one of the few volunteers left cleaning up, how much yuck a snack can create came very high up my priorities.

YouveGotAFastCar · 08/05/2024 19:23

None of the toddler groups I go to allow the kids to play while eating, they sit at the table for snack and food isn’t allowed in the play areas.

It’s usually toast, biscuits, fruit, cheese, breadsticks, rice cakes…. Fruit salad is almost always on offer as it’s so popular.

Most of the ones I went to were in Church halls run by the older ladies who attended the church. They were sweet ladies with a bit of free time who wanted to have some contact with toddlers and mums - I wouldn't expect them to know all about nutrition and healthy eating for toddlers. I was happy for mine to have a couple of party rings and a handful of crisps.

bollocks, these are usually voluntarily run play groups ... and if you have to pay anything, it's just to cover costs.
A kid having a single Rich Tea finger once a week isn;t going to kill them ... and if it means that much to you take your own snacks...

Yet you'd give out smoothies which may as well just be free sugars, Dried apricots, choking hazard and sugary, fruit kebabs that are bad for teeth? Those are 3 terrible snacks.

PeppermintParty · 09/05/2024 14:11

Seems like the only way to please mumsnetters is to serve water only.

longdistanceclaraclara · 09/05/2024 14:25

Do people really fanny about making cheese on toast for toddler groups?

Bananas are a choking hazard. Raisins / dried fruit is full of sugar, ditto smoothies, and who is going to be making those?
