Amazing ladies poll - how many of these 12 things can you do?

Dargawn · 08/05/2024 11:39

How many of these things can you do without assistance:

Add air to a tyre
Change oil
Change a wheel on your car
Fix a bike pucture
Put up shelving
Change a plug adhering to all safety advice and best practice
Put together a cabinet-size piece of flat pack furniture
Set up a home network
Diganose problem and mend toaster
Change element in an oven
Sort out a fuse box if lights go off
Turn off water at mains in case of leak

I can do none very confidently at the moment, but at a stretch might be able to do three.

I want to be able to do them all.

Guess I'm not an amazing woman. Neither is DH - he can do less than me in that list.

Jux · 08/05/2024 13:57

I could do all except the first three though in fact I do remember doing the first with my dad when I was pretty young.

I know what to do to change a tyre but have never had to and am now, thanks to ms, not strong enough.

JanglingJack · 08/05/2024 14:06

All except the oven. The situation has never arisen and I no longer have an oven.

I have also laid and fitted hallway and stairs carpet - including annoying corner bit.

Brefugee · 08/05/2024 14:08

i can't change a bike tyre.

I wouldn't change an element in an oven because the risk is too high. TBH i don't think anyone but a qualified electrician should do that. Ever.

I can change oil, but i don't have the facilities now and it's a messy job. I outsource messy time consuming jobs.

Brefugee · 08/05/2024 14:12

oh and i wouldn't fuck about with a toaster. I'd bin it and either get a new one or use the grill.

Bjorkdidit · 08/05/2024 14:13

Add air to a tyre yes

Change oil do you mean change oil, or just top it up I wouldn't change the oil because I pay for that as part of a service, but I can and do top it up.

Change a wheel on your car yes

Fix a bike pucture yes

Put up shelving yes

Change a plug adhering to all safety advice and best practice yes

Put together a cabinet-size piece of flat pack furniture yes

Set up a home network yes

Diganose problem and mend toaster well I'd check the fuse, after that, probably replace it because it's 10 years old and shite, so would welcome being able to justify buying a new one

Change element in an oven probably, it will be on youtube, so I'd just copy that. However, that's something else I'd not bother to do as we have two ovens that hardly ever get used since the purchase of the air fryer, so a broken oven would be a good excuse to rip it out and put the air fryer in the space

Sort out a fuse box if lights go off did this just last week in a holiday cottage. In fact it was me who worked out which fuse was which and how to keep most of the electricity on by isolating the thing that was blowing all the electrics until the electrican came, while every one else was flapping around because their phones weren't charging

Turn off water at mains in case of leak yes

Shan5474 · 08/05/2024 14:13

I can do all except the toaster and oven but could maybe work them out.

Earlier I learnt how to change a car brake bulb and felt very accomplished! DIY and learning to do things gives such a sense of satisfaction but also you save a lot of money! I learn most things from YouTube or forums like DIYnot and Screwfix where people have had the same problems

boobot1 · 08/05/2024 14:14

Yes and many other things like change taps, put up a fence, put up a deck, hang doors, wallpaper, tile and lots of other stuff.

GingerPirate · 08/05/2024 14:17

About two, but I never needed to.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/05/2024 14:20

JaninaDuszejko · 08/05/2024 12:06

I can do some of them and have never needed to do the others but know where to find the information I need to do them. I'm a scientist so lots of experience of using bits of obscure kit so perfectly happy to do DIY type stuff if I need to. DH is less practical than me so I make him do some of these things.

A comparable list for an 'amazing man' would surely include the following life skills my Mum thought were important:

Bath a newborn baby
Make a roast dinner
Sew on a button
Iron a shirt
Write a formal reply to a wedding invitation
Debone a fish
Giftwrap a present
Hem a pair of trousers
Repot a pot plant
Clean an oven
Prune a rose

Exactly.

I can do 7 of the women's list. I don't have a bike, plugs are typically not changeable now so that's a moot point, and I married a nerd so I wouldn't have to set up a home network. But could if I had to.

Men, can you:

Name all your child's teachers and friends, along with parents' names and preferences?
Reliably wash clothes without hanging funny, shrinking anything, or drying anything that shouldn't?
Buy and wrap all presents for all family members, yours and you partners' with care, love and so they like them all?
Name everyone's allergies, health issues, surgeries and vaccinations without looking?
Get a cold without wearing a dressing gown of doom and using sick voice?
Prioritise children's events over any sports and/or hobby?

These are the ones DH struggles with (except the last one, that's my friend's DH) but I'm sure they are partially challenging for some men.

CrotchetyQuaver · 08/05/2024 14:22

I can do 6, I could probably change a car wheel if I absolutely had to, but I've never had to do it on my own, when it's happened, a kind male has always stopped to do it for me.

whoateallthecookies · 08/05/2024 14:23

When it comes to changing a tyre, very few cars in the UK carry equipment that would actually be usable - when I lived overseas in a country where punctures were common and rescue services non-existent, I had a frauenjack (a jack designed to need very little strength) and a spanner nearly 1m long, which I could jump on (the vehicle had an external roll cage, which made it much easier to hold on while jumping). Now I'm in the UK, I'm a member of the RAC (and have never had a fast puncture)

Lilacdew · 08/05/2024 14:23

I can do five of them confidently and have done a couple of others before at least once. I don't drive so have never needed to change oil or top up tyre air but have changed a car wheel before - forty years ago! And knew how to turn off water at mains in old house but am not 100% sure where the mains tap is in current house (only lived here for twenty years Grin Blush)

Hoppinggreen · 08/05/2024 14:26

I could probably do most of those things but as I have the ability to phone someone to come and do it and afford to pay them why would I?

Sunbird24 · 08/05/2024 14:27

Nine that I know of, but sure I could work out the rest with a decent YouTube video.
I consider any flatpack furniture directions that say ‘2 man assembly’ a direct challenge - never been defeated yet!

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/05/2024 14:28

I checked with DH and he can't do all of the boy jobs (I'm better with cars than he is) and he can do exactly the same number of @JaninaDuszejko list of girl jobs.

And only one of mine Grin he said "ha ha" at the dressing gown of doom.

Wimpeyspread · 08/05/2024 14:31

I can do all -noone else to do it for me!! I find YouTube very useful if I have a problem I don’t know how to solve

i am, however lousy at roast dinners, and have never deboned a fish

hairypaws · 08/05/2024 14:32

All of them except oil change but I probably could with YouTube. I can top up oil obviously.

AgeingDoc · 08/05/2024 14:32

Most of them. But there are some things that whilst I know in theory how to do, like change a car wheel I am no longer physically strong enough to manage. And others that I just wouldn't want to be bothered with like changing my car's oil - horrible messy job that I would think the vast majority of people of either sex would leave to whoever services their car. I haven't lived in a house with a fuse box for a very long time so no need to deal with that.
I'm not sure any of these things would count amongst the pinnacles of my life's achievements mind you. If I wanted to boast about my practical skills and manual dexterity I'd probably go for examples like being able to get iv access in a drug abuser or an arterial line in a critically ill infant rather than assembling something from IKEA.

GreenTreeFlower · 08/05/2024 14:32

I think the most important thing for most DIY tasks are having the right tools, a good positive 'can do' attitude and you tube.

Talent is more optional 😅

Time is good to have too. I changed the doors on my sons fridge freezer the other day from being hung are the left hand to being hung on the right hand. I followed a you tube video and found it easy but o do it slowly and methodically. I bet someone that knew what they were doing would do it in half the time

dudsville · 08/05/2024 14:33
  1. The year is 2024.
Revelatio · 08/05/2024 14:33

But why?! What is the point of this list?

AMAZING ADULT HUMANS! Can you:
•Open a front door
•Rub your tummy and pat your head at the same time
•Boil an egg
•Fly a plane
•Hold your breath for a minute
•Remove an appendix
•Come up with stupid lists that prove neither ‘ladyness’ or ‘amazingness’

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 08/05/2024 14:37

I can do all safely apart from cooker and toaster. I would probably have to Google a couple of them beforehand just to check
I can't do home network because I don't want to 😁. I could under duress but I don't want to.

Magentaplasticglasses · 08/05/2024 14:37

I guess I'm not an amazing woman. Although I can also confidently
-disconnect a washing machine

  • put together big furniture like a bed or wardrobe
  • change an NG tube
-change a Micky/mini button feeding tube -run feeds through said feeding tubes
  • pass a catheter into an ACE stoma and run enema solution through it

Amongst other things 🤷🏽‍♀️

Thudercatsrule · 08/05/2024 14:38

I can confidently do 7 and would have a bash at the others with the help of youtube! DH on the other hand could only do a few!!
