Dargawn · 08/05/2024 11:39

How many of these things can you do without assistance:

Add air to a tyre
Change oil
Change a wheel on your car
Fix a bike pucture
Put up shelving
Change a plug adhering to all safety advice and best practice
Put together a cabinet-size piece of flat pack furniture
Set up a home network
Diganose problem and mend toaster
Change element in an oven
Sort out a fuse box if lights go off
Turn off water at mains in case of leak

I can do none very confidently at the moment, but at a stretch might be able to do three.

I want to be able to do them all.

When I moved into my house I found a pack of fuse wire in a drawer. I wondered what it was for.

Making models (according to 12yo me.) Fixing fuses (according to Dad.)

I can do ten, just never changed oil or tyre on a car

Have fitted my own kitchen and bathroom, really enjoy DIY.

Was single for years and always find it odd when some women bitch about nagging their husbands to do easy stuff.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 08/05/2024 13:14

I can do them all but some I prefer to pay others to do.

My DH can do none of these.

Teenagerantruns · 08/05/2024 13:15

I don't drive, but know how to out air in a tyre, the toaster thing l couldn't be bothered would just get a new one. I can do all the others, but surely no one changes a plug these days they are fused on?

Desecratedcoconut · 08/05/2024 13:20

Why would it be amazing to do all these things? Because these are the jobs are presumably coded male, and so are innately amazing to begin with and a bit of amazing rubs off on women who can do them?

Don't you find it a bit troubling that advancement of women is a narrative of doing things that the world tells us that men do is a backhanded compliment inasmuch as it perpetuates the idea that those things the world tells us women do are ordinary, unskilled and not amazing?

Helpel · 08/05/2024 13:26

Echoing others, doing stereotypically male jobs doesn't make you amazing (well it might but it's not exclusive). Our house has a pink and blue split - we do what we're best at, whether that's down to actual inbuilt skill or because they're ingrained socially and culturally. So my husband would do all of these jobs if they arose. There are loads of 'pink' jobs he's shit at. But are we really gonna fight the flow for no real reason? Obviously if I become single then I would learn (or find another handy man 😂😂)

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 08/05/2024 13:30

All but one, I don't have the strength to undo wheel nuts.

Changing the oven element is probably one of the easiest things on this list, probably quicker and easier to google, order replacement and fit than to organise someone to come in and do it. Not to mention way cheaper. Don't be put off because it sounds hard.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 08/05/2024 13:35

All of them.
The toaster one is only relevant if you have a Duality.

Chillilounger · 08/05/2024 13:35

I have done most of these and would feel confident doing all except for the car tyre. I would just assume I wouldn't have the strength but no idea why!

PuttingDownRoots · 08/05/2024 13:35

Re changing plugs... it is an essential skill if you've lived in a mix of countries so have a mixture of appliances! You cut off the old one as its a complete unit.

Tarkan · 08/05/2024 13:41

I don't drive or cycle so can't do any of those things as I've never needed to.

As well as putting up a shelf myself, as a teenager I actually built my own shelf and told my dad how it should be fastened to the wall and he didn't listen to me and it was wobbly, so I do that myself now.

Flatpack is easy, my only issue nowadays is my mobility and sitting on the floor when I'm building something. I did all the bathroom cabinets and my two big bookcases in my book nook myself when we moved into our house, everything else was already done.

I can sort the fuse box. We rent so the oven is the landlord's issue. Never needed to do the toaster thing but tbh I would just buy a new one.

I can turn off the water but DH has to remind me where the stop cock is as my memory isn't the best and I can never remember which cupboard it's in. I should maybe use my label maker to mark it so I know without asking.

I can also reset our boiler when the pressure drops, that's a good one to know IMO.

Tarkan · 08/05/2024 13:43

I'd also add knowing how to drain a washing machine and clean the filter if it jams mid-cycle to the list. I've had to do that many times and it was me who showed DH how to do that as his machine used to be awful for it. I've had to explain it to a few friends as well.

Ten of them......does home network mean wifi?
Rather pleased with ten........

olderbutwiser · 08/05/2024 13:45

Add air to a tyre - yes
Change oil - refill, could change but it's definitely something I'd rather pay someone to do
Change a wheel on your car - don't have the strength to get the nuts off any more, sadly
Fix a bike puncture - if I absolutely had to but I'd rather buy a new bike
Put up shelving - yes
Change a plug adhering to all safety advice and best practice - change yes, safety advice and best practice hadn't been invented when I learned how
Put together a cabinet-size piece of flat pack furniture - yup
Set up a home network - yup
Diagnose problem and mend toaster - it depends on the problem
Change element in an oven - that's what YouTube videos are for
Sort out a fuse box if lights go off - yes
Turn off water at mains in case of leak - yes, including during an emergency

I tried that and still had to call the AA. Was very very sad. 😢. I wanted to be the kickass little grannie changing her own tyre by the side of the road.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 08/05/2024 13:46

I can do nine of them. I'm only unable to change a tyre now due to disability. I'm in the process of teaching my DD all on that list and more. She is brilliant at flat pack furniture.

Beatrixslobber · 08/05/2024 13:47

I can:
Add air to a tyre
Change a wheel on your car
Fix a bike pucture
Put up shelving
Put together a cabinet-size piece of flat pack furniture
Sort out a fuse box if lights go off
Turn off water at mains in case of leak

I have never tried but would have a go:
Change oil
Change a plug adhering to all safety advice and best practice
Set up a home network
Diganose problem and mend toaster
Change element in an oven

I can do so much more though! I am s amazing.

countrygirl99 · 08/05/2024 13:50

9/10 are yes. Never owned a toaster so never tried but I'm sure there's a YouTube video I could follow.
But none of the examples are anything particularly difficult. I would expect most adults without a disability could do them if they wanted to.

unsync · 08/05/2024 13:50

I don't do oil changes or punctures, mainly because I CBA, but I can do all the rest. I can also fix the chain on my bike when the bastard thing pops off.

However, is change oil actually right? I thought the car would have to go on a platform for that? I can check level and fill as necessary.

shenandoahvalley · 08/05/2024 13:54

What is this random list of things that you've decided are the prerequistes to female amazingness?

I can do 3 or 4 of them. But I earn enough money to pay someone to do the rest of them for me, or buy my way out of the problem, without a second thought. If I ever ran out of money, I have the ability to figure each and every one of these things out for myself. They're hardly difficult.

Does this make me more, less or equally amazing? Or is it, perhaps, completely irrelevant?

Karatema · 08/05/2024 13:55

I could do most competently but change the wheel on the car - no! Last year I tried then called DH who tried! Limped into garage who confirmed the wheel was welded onto the axle so a huge hammer was needed!
